Speech Perception and Gap Detection Performance of Single-Sided Deafness under Noisy Conditions

  • Background and Objectives: Many studies have reported no benefit of sound localization, but improved speech understanding in noise after treating patients with single-sided deafness (SSD). Furthermore, their performances provided a large individual difference. The present study aimed to measure the ability of speech perception and gap detection in noise for the SSD patients to better understand their hearing nature. Subjects and Methods: Nine SSD patients with different onset and period of hearing deprivation and 20 young adults with normal hearing and simulated conductive hearing loss as the control groups conducted speech perception in noise (SPIN) and Gap-In-Noise (GIN) tests. The SPIN test asked how many presented sentences were understood at the +5 and -5 dB signal-to-noise ratio. The GIN test was asked to find the shortest gap in white noise with different lengths in the gap. Results: Compared to the groups with normal hearing and simulated instant hearing loss, the SSD group showed much poor performance in both SPIN and GIN tests while supporting central auditory plasticity of the SSD patients. Rather than a longer period of deafness, the large individual variance indicated that the congenital SSD patients showed better performance than the acquired SSD patients in two measurements. Conclusions: The results suggested that comprehensive assessments should be implemented before any treatment of the SSD patient considering their onset time and etiology, although these findings need to be generalized with a large sample size.

국화 '백마'의 플러그 육묘시 삽목조건이 삽목묘와 절화 생육에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Cutting Condition on Growth of Rooted Cuttings and Cut Flower in Plug Cutting of Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Baekma')

  • 본 연구는 스탠다드 국화 '백마' 품종의 플러그 묘 생산에 있어서 삽수의 조건이 지상부 생육과 발근 및 정식 후의 절화 생육에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 실시하였다. 삽수에 잎을 많이 부착할수록 삽목묘의 지상부 생육이 양호하였고, 잎을 4-6장 부착하여 삽목하는 것이 다른 처리에 비해 발근에 효과적이었다. 삽수길이에 따른 삽목묘의 지상부 생육은 큰 차이가 없었으며, 삽수길이를 5-7cm로 처리하는 것이 발근상태가 양호하였다. 삽수 굵기는 3.1mm 처리에 비해 3.6mm와 4.2mm 처리에서 삽목묘의 지상부 생육과 발근이 양호하였다. NAA 처리농도가 높을수록 삽목묘의 지상부 생육이 억제되었으며, 뿌리의 길이도 짧아졌다. NAA $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$를 1시간 처리하여 삽목하는 것이 삽목묘의 지상부 생육과 발근에 효과적이었다. 피트모스와 펄라이트를 2:2로 혼합한 배지에서 다른 처리에 비해 뿌리의 길이, 수 및 무게 등이 뿌리의 생육이 양호하였다. 잎이 적은 것보다 4-6개 부착된 삽수의 삽목묘를 정식했을 때, 절화장이 길고, 무게가 무거웠으며, 엽수도 많았다. 삽수길이에 있어서 7-9cm 처리가 절화장, 절화무게, 설상화 수 등 전반적인 절화의 생육에 효과적이었다. 따라서 '백마' 플러그 묘 생산시 7cm 길이에 3.6mm 굵기의 4-6장의 잎을 부착한 삽수를 삽목하는 것이 삽목묘의 지상부 생육과 발근 및 정식 후의 절화 생육을 위해 바람직하였다.

Choice of Capecitabine or S1 in Combination with Oxaliplatin based on Thymidine Phosphorylase and Dihydropyrimidine Dehydrogenase Expression Status in Patients with Advanced Gastric Cancer

  • Purpose: To study the efficacy of capecitabine or S-1 plus oxaliplatin (CAPOX or SOX) for treating thymidine phosphorylase (TP)- or dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD)-positive advanced gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: Eighty-six patients with stage IIIC to IV gastric cancer were assessed for TP and DPD expression by immunohistochemistry. The association between CAPOX or SOX efficacy and TP/DPD expression was retrospectively analyzed. Results: There were no significant differences in the objective remission rate (ORR, 52.27% vs. 47.62%; P>0.05), disease control rate (72.73% vs. 73.81%, P>0.05), progression-free survival (hazard ratio [HR], 1.119; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.739-1.741; P=0.586), and overall survival (OS; HR, 0.855; 95% CI, 0.481-1.511; P=0.588) between CAPOX and SOX. A higher number of stage IV patients showed TP positivity, while DPD-positive patients predominantly showed intestinal type of gastric cancer. In TP-positive patients, the ORRs associated with CAPOX and SOX treatments were 57.14% and 38.10%, respectively; OS was better with CAPOX than with SOX (HR, 0.447; 95% CI, 0.179-0.978; P=0.046). Among DPD-positive patients, the SOX treatment-associated ORR (60.87%) was significantly higher than the CAPOX treatment-associated ORR (43.48%). Furthermore, SOX treatment resulted in better OS than did CAPOX treatment (HR, 2.020; 95% CI, 1.019-4.837; P=0.049). Conclusions: No significant difference in clinical efficacy was found between CAPOX and SOX. TP-positive patients might respond better to CAPOX while DPD-positive patients may respond better to SOX. Our findings might serve as a guide for personalized chemotherapy for gastric cancer.

폭기/비폭기 상태의 기근기간이 활성슬러지의 물리적 특성 및 유기물 제거에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Aerobic/non-aerobic Starvation Periods on the Physical Characteristics of Activated Sludge and Organic Removal Efficiency in SBR)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of starvation periods with aerobic or non-aerobic conditions on the organic removal efficiencies and physical characteristics of activated sludge for treating saline and non-saline wastewater. During the experiment, MLSS, MLVSS, sludge volume index (SVI), floc size and fractal dimension, $COD_{Mn}$ removal efficiencies were monitored. The reductions of MLSS, MLVSS and SVI with maintaining the sludge under a non-aerobic condition during starvation periods were smaller than those under a aerobic condition. Floc size, fractal dimension and $COD_{Mn}$ removal efficiencies were less decreased under non-aerobic condition than under aerobic condition. And SVI were strongly correlated with floc size and fractal dimension. Consequently, the result showed that maintaining the activated sludge under non-aerobic starvation conditions was better strategy than that under aerobic starvation conditions as it adapted and resisted to starvation.

  • Objectives : The Purpose of this report is to examine the effect of Remote Acupuncture Point Needling in the Low Back Pain patient of Acute Stage. Methods : From October 1st 2005 to May 31th 2006, 30 cases of low back pain patients at acute stage were divided into 2 groups; one group(control group) took near acupuncture point needling, and the other group(test group) took near acupuncture point needling with remote acupuncture point needling. For evaluating change of pain, Visual Analog Scale(VAS) was checked before and after Treatment. Results : Both acupuncture therapy showed good effect on low back pain of acute stage. And test group showed better effect on decreasing pain than control group. It was proved by the difference between VAS checked before treatment and what checked after treatment. But it was not significant statistically. Conclusion : Near acupuncture point needling and remote acupuncture point needling can be recommended as a useful therapy to treat low back pain of acute stage.

강직성척추염 환자의 1례 증례보고 (A Case Report on the Ankylosing Spondylitis Patient)

  • Objectives : Ankylosing Spondylitis, inflamatic disease, appeared symostosis, pain and dyscinesia in spine and sacroilic joint. It repeated an improvement and a depravation. We observed one patient with Ankylosing Spondylitis. Methods : This patient was juged incurable in points of western medical's View. But he was improved by treating oriental medical therapy. The therapies which used in this patient was acupunture, bee venom, korean chuna therapy and kinesiatrics etc. We measured the R.O.M, special test and degree of pain every day. Results : The R.O.M of extension in lumbar ${vertebrae(0_{\circ}\;{\rightarrow}5_{\circ}\;)\;and\;patrick\;sign(++/-\;{\rightarrow}\;-/-)}$ was improved a little. Degree of pain was improved better than admission. Conclusions : This case has demonstrated that the Ankylosing Spondylitis treated by oriental medical therapies proved good results.

백하수오(白何首烏), 시엽(枾葉), 일라이트 조성물의 Atopy 병태모델 치료효과 (Improving Effect on Aatopic Dermatitis with Treatment of Selected Herbs ; Polygoni Multiflori Radix, Diospyros Kaki, ilite and its Mixture in NCNga Mice)

  • We observed the efficacy of natural herbs and mixture in treating atopic dermatitis using anti-human IgE treated Human HMC-I cell and NCNga mice model. First, we selected three herbs, Cynonchum witfordii, Diospyros kaki, Ilite which were used to treat skin disease in Traditional Korea Medicine. Using Human HMC-I cell treated with anti-human IgE, we investigate in vitro whether each herb effects on IL-4, IL-13, $TNF-{\alpha}$ expression and $TNF-{\alpha}$, Histamine secretion value. Finally, we conducted study whether the mixture of the selected herbs is more effective than each herb which consist the mixture and control group. The results show that the mixture is better in improving atopic dermatitis condition.

Anti-Hyperalgesic Effects of Meloxicam Hydrogel via Phonophoresis in Acute Inflammation in Rats; Comparing Systemic and Topical Application

  • The aim of this study was to determine if a meloxicam hydrogel could be administered in vivo via phonophoretic transdermal delivery using pulsed ultrasound by examining its anti-hyperalgesic effects in a rat carrageenan inflammation model. Carrageenan (1%) was injected into the plantar surface of the right hindpaw, and meloxicam hydrogel was administered via phonophoretic transdermal delivery. Changes in the mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia, as well as swelling, showed that phonophoretic delivery of meloxicam exhibited significantly better anti-hyperalgesic and anti-inflammatory effects than pulsed ultrasound. Topical and systemic application of meloxicam hydrogel using phonophoresis showed similar anti-hyperalgesic effects. These findings suggest that the transdermal administration of a meloxicam hydrogel using phonophoresis by pulsed ultrasound might be useful for treating acute inflammation.

Fabrication of Cross-linked Nano-Fibrous Chitosan Membranes and Their Biocompatibility Evaluation

  • Fibrous chitosan membranes were fabricated as a substrate for skin applications using an electro-spinning process with different solvents and varying concentrations. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images confirmed that the formation of the chitosan fibrous membrane in trifluoroacetic acid was better than that in acetic acid. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the chitosan fibers were cross-linked with glutaraldehyde, and that the cytotoxicity of the aldehyde groups was reduced by glycine and washing by NaOH and DI water. Chitosan cross-linked fibrous membranes were insoluble in water and could be washed thoroughly to wash away glycine and excess NaOH and prevent the infiltration of other water soluble bio-toxic agents using DI water. MTT assay method was employed to test the cytotoxicity of chitosan membranes during fabricating, treating and washing processes. After the dehydration of cell cultured chitosan membranes, cell attachment behavior on the material was evaluated using SEM method. Effect of the treatment processes on the biocompatibility of the chitosan membranes was shown by comparing of filopodium and lamellipodium of fibroblast cells on grown washed and unwashed chitosan fibrous membrane. The MTT assay and SEM morphology confirmed that the washed chitosan fibrous membrane increased cell attachment and cell growth, and decreased toxicity compared to results for the unwashed chitosan fibrous membrane.
