  • A preparative method of Me2SCuX (X = Cl, Br) via one-pot reaction was developed from common chemicals such as benzyl halide, DMSO, and Cu(0). In the reaction mixture small molecules such as methyl halide and dimethyl sulfide etc. were efficiently generated in situ, resulting in the formation of Me2SCuX. Oxidation of Cu(0) in reacting with both benzyl halide (starting material) and methyl halide (in situ generated product) to Cu(I) followed by complexing with dimethyl sulfide (in situ generated product) could explain the formation of Me2SCuX. In particular we found out that heterogeneous reaction of Me2SCuX and arenediazonium tetrafluoroborate in acetonitrile was so effective to afford corresponding bromoaromatics under mild conditions.

  • Kinetic studies on the halide exchange reactions of some substituted benzyl chlorides have been carried out using radioisotope tracer halide ions. Results are consistent with our previous conclusion that the rates of halide exchange reactions in acetone with arylmethy halides are dictated by the porarizabilities of both substrate and nucleophile.

  • Kinetics of halogen exchange reaction of 1-phenthyl chloride and 2-phenethyl chloride using radioisotopic tracer halide ions in acetone have been studied. The reactions were belived to be S$_{N}$2 processes and the orders of relative nucleophilicity of halide ions were Cl->Br->I-. The reaction rate is slower than that of benzyl chloride. These were interpreted in terms of solvation effect of halide ions and HSAB principle.

  • Arylmethyl halides(benzyl chloride, BZYC; benzal chloride, BZYA; benzotrichloride, BZTC) and related compounds(benzyl alcohol, BZYA; benzoyl chloride, BZOC) were determined by GC using capillary column. Detailed results are as follows. 1. Stability In methanol benzotrichloride slowly transferred to benzoyl chloride by hydrolysis(ca. 7.5% for 5 days), but the others were stable. Therefore, benzotrichloride solution should be prepared just before analysis. 2. GC analysis Tenax-GC was used to absorbent and desorption solvents were $CCl_4$ and MeOH. Arylmethyl halides were analyzed within 7.5min without interference with related compounds. The calibration curve(ca. 15-80 ppm in soln), repeatability(n=10) and the desorption efficiency were good. Limit of detection by NIOSH method was about 0.003 ppm for arylmethyl halide, respectively. To analyze arylmethyl halides and related compounds in working places GC using capillary column is anticipated to be used effectively.

  • Halogen exchange reactions of benzyl halides have been studied in absolute acetone. Rate constants were calculated using an integrated rate expression derived for the reaction involving ion-pair association. The order of nucleophilicity of halide ions in acetone was found to be a reverse of the order in 90% aqueous enthanol solvent. This was interpreted by means of HSAB principle and solvation of halide ions. Net increase in rate of reaction in acetone compared with the rate in protic solvent resulted from large increase in ${\Delta}S^\neq$ rather than decrease in ${\Delta}H^\neq$. The solvation of the transition state also contribute to the net increase in rate.

  • Halogen exchanges between benzyl chloride and chloride ion have been studied in 90% ethanol-water mixture, and activation parameters in the exchange reaction have been determined; ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$ = 18. 50 Kcal and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$ = -22. 09 e. u. Results indicated that the reaction proceeded via a typical bimolecular mechanism. The importance of nucleophilic ability of attacking anion in $S_N2$ process has been stressed giving some experimental evidence. The order of reactivity of halides in the exchange reaction is better explained with the Swain's nucleophilic parameter than with the bond dissociation energies.

  • The reaction of $CpMo(CO)_3-M^+(M^+,\;Li^+,\;Na^+,\;K^+,\;PPN^{+a})$ with allyl halide was performed and the details of its counterion effects and solvent effect was investigated under the pseudo-first order conditions. The kinetic data from this reaction were compared with those from the reaction of the same anion with benzyl halides in terms of their inverse counterion effects.

  • A method for the selective syntheses of alkyl (alkoxymethyl)benzoates from halobenzyl halides by two steps in one pot process is described. In the first step, benzyl halide moiety is etherified with alkoxide anion in alcohol by Williamson ether process. In the second step, aryl halide moiety is carbonylated to give alkyl (alkoxymethyl)benzoate with alcohol, Na$_2$CO$_3$, CH$_3$I, and carbon monoxide (1 atm) in the presence of a catalytic amount of Co$_2$(CO)$_8$ in excellent yield.

  • The rates and activation parameters for the halide exchange reactions of substituted benzenesulfonylbromides (R-C$_{6}$H$_4$SO$_2$Br, R=p-MeO, p-$CH_3$, p-H, p-NO$_2$) in dry acetone at two temperatures were determined. It was found that the nucleophilicity order of Cl->I-$\geq$Br- for strong electron withdrawing-, and mild electron donating group, and of I-$\geq$Cl->Br- for strong electron donating group, Hammett plots showed slightly convoked characteristics which is similar to the plots of substituted benzenesulfonylchlorides, but contrary to the concaved nature for the halide exchange reactions of substituted benzyl chlorides. The rate of halogen exchange between benzenesulfonylbromide and lithium bromide decreased in the order of solvent : ($CH_3$)$_2$CO>$CH_3$CN》MeOH. The rates and activation parameters were also compared with those already known in the substituted benzenesulfonylchlorides. Theses were explained in terms of the structural properties of the transition state, and discussed the reaction mechanisms.s.

  • Dicyclohexyl telluride was obtained in a high yield by the reaction of cyclohexyl bromide with NaTeH(prepared in situ) in an aqueous ethanolic solution. A series of new organotelluronium salts of the general formula ${(cyclo-C_6H_11)}_2Te(R)X$ (where R = $CH_3$, X = I (1); R = $C_2H_5$, X = Br(2); R = $C_2H_5$, X = I (3); R = C_3H_5$, X = Br (4)) were prepared by the reaction of ${(cyclo-C_6H_11)}_2Te$ with the corresponding alkyl halide. Reaction of 1 with NaBPh4 gave compound 5 ( i.e. R = CH3, X = BPh4 ‒) in 78% yield. Reaction of ${(cyclo-C_6H_11)}_2Te$ with benzyl bromide and 4-bromophenacyl bromide gave unexpectedly dibenzylcyclohexyltelluronium bromide (6) and bis(4-bromophenacyl)cyclohexyltelluronium bromide (7), respectively. Reaction of 6 with NaBPh4 gave the corresponding tetraphenylborate derivative (8) in high yield. $^1H$ NMR studies revealed that in $CDCl_3$solution compound 1 eliminated alkyl halide. Conductivity, IR, $^1H\;and\;^{13}C$ NMR and thermal data for the new compounds are presented and discussed.
