  • The reaction of VO_2\;^+$ with benzyl alcohol in perchloric acid and aqueous dimethylformamide leads to the formation of $VO^{2+}$ and benzaldehyde. The products, $VO^{2+}$ and benzaldehyde, are identified by infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography. Kinetic studies on the reaction of VO_2\;^+$ with benzyl alcohol have been carried out using visible spectroscopy. The empirical rate equation can be expressed as $-d[VO_2\;^+]/dt=2\{\\{k_O+k_H[HClO_4]\}\[VO_2\;^+][C_6H_5CH_2OH]$ The rate determining step for the reaction is the process for the formation of $VO^{2+}$ and $C_6H_5CHOH$. The activation parameters are ${\Delta}H^{\neq}=13.32{\pm}1.73\;kcalmol^{-1}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}=-31.02{\pm}0.09\;calmol^{-1}K^{-1}$ for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol in aqueous dimethylformamide.

  • $C_9H_7NHCrO_3Cl$ was synthesized by reacting $C_9H_7NH$ with chromium (VI) trioxide. The structure of the product was characterized by FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared) spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The oxidation of benzyl alcohol by $C_9H_7NHCrO_3Cl$ in various solvents showed that the reactivity increased with increasing dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}$) in the following order: DMF (N,N'-dimethylformamide) > acetone > chloroform > cyclohexane. The oxidation of alcohols was examined by $C_9H_7NHCrO_3Cl$ in DMF. As a result, $C_9H_7NHCrO_3Cl$ was found to be an efficient oxidizing agent that converts benzyl alcohol, allyl alcohol, primary alcohols, and secondary alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones (75%-95%). The selective oxidation of alcohols was also examined by $C_9H_7NHCrO_3Cl$ in DMF. $C_9H_7NHCrO_3Cl$ was the selective oxidizing agent of benzyl, allyl and primary alcohol in the presence of secondary ones. In the presence of DMF with an acidic catalyst, such as $H_2SO_4$, $C_9H_7NHCrO_3Cl$ oxidized benzyl alcohol (H) and its derivatives ($p-OCH_3$, $m-CH_3$, $m-OCH_3$, m-Cl, and $m-NO_2$). Electron donating substituents accelerated the reaction rate, whereas electron acceptor groups retarded the reaction rate. The Hammett reaction constant (${\rho}$) was -0.69 (308K). The observed experimental data were used to rationalize hydride ion transfer in the rate-determining step.

  • $Pd/TiO_2$ catalysts for aerobic benzyl alcohol oxidation were synthesized and eight different room temperature ionic liquids were used to control the palladium properties as active sites. $Pd/TiO_2$ particles were also calcined at 300, 400 and $500^{\circ}C$ to obtain an optimum catalyst. As the calcination temperature increased, the surface area and pore volume of catalyst decreased, but negligible changes were observed for the pore size of catalyst. However, the structural properties of catalyst varied with respect to the type of ionic liquids. Under identical reaction conditions, different catalytic activities were obtained depending upon the calcination temperature and type of ionic liquids. Mostly, the catalyst calcined at $400^{\circ}C$ showed higher catalytic activity than those at other temperatures. However, the catalyst prepared with 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate showed good catalytic performance after calcination at $300^{\circ}C$. Among the catalyst, $Pd/TiO_2$ prepared with 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate and calcined at $400^{\circ}C$ showed the highest catalytic activity.

  • The synthesis and characterization of ${K_3[Ru(C_2O_4)3]{\cdot}4H_2O\;(C_2O_4}^{2-}$ = oxalato anoin) complex are described, and its redox properties (in buffer solution of pH = 12) have been investigated. This complex is used for in situ generation of oxoruthenates complexes which have been characterized by electronic spectroscopy. Reaction of ${K_3[Ru(C_2O_4)3]{\cdot}4H_2O$ with excess ${S_2O_8}^{2-}$ in molar KOH generates trans-${[RuO_3(OH)_2]^{2-}/S_2O_8}^{2-}$ reagent while with excess ${BrO_3}^-$ in molar $Na_2CO_3$ generates ${[RuO_4]^-/BrO_3}^-$ reagent. Avoiding the direct use of [$RuO_4$] the organic-soluble $(n-Pr_4N)^+[RuO_4]^-$, (TPAP) has been isolated by reaction of $K_3[Ru(C_2O_4)3]{\cdot}4H_2O$ with excess ${BrO_3}^-$ in molar carbonate and n-$Pr_4$NOH. In a mixture of $H_2O/CCl_4$ ruthenium tetraoxide can be generated by reaction of $K_3[Ru(C_2O_4)3]{\cdot}4H_2O$ with excess ${IO_4}^-$. The catalytic activities of oxoruthenates that have been made from $K_3[Ru(C_2O_4)3]{\cdot}4H_2O$ towards the oxidation of benzyl alcohol, piperonyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and benzyl amine at room temperature have been studied.

  • Metabolism of tranylcypromine (TCP) in rat liver microsomes was studied in vitro using fortified microsomal preparations. As well as unlabeled TCP, two deuterium labeled analogs, TCP-phenyl-$d_{5}$ and TCP-cyclopropyl-$d_{2}$ were used and GC/MS employed which was then metabolized to cinnamaldehyde and hydrocinnamyl alcohol. Schiff bases of TCP with hydrocinnamaldehyde and acetaldehyde were detected and possibility of the metabolic formation of N-ethylidene TCP was proposed. In addition, acetophenone (benzoylacetic acid), benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, and benzyl alcohol were detected as the metabolites. Chemical decomposition studies suggested that parts of the oxidized products might be derived by air oxidation processes. A potential metabolite assumed to be N-ethylidene-1, 2-dihydroxy-3-phenylpropanamine oxide was also detected.

  • Sodium titanate nanosheets were prepared by a hydrothermal synthesis method under basic conditions. Ruthenium was introduced on the surface of sodium titanate nanosheets through an UV irradiation in the aqueous $RuCl_3$ solution. The crystal phase and morphology of synthesized samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. In addition, the content of Ru was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma. It was proposed that a monomeric form of ruthenium was incorporated on the surface of sodium titanate. Ruthenium incorporated sodium titanates were applied to alcohol oxidation using molecular oxygen as an oxidant. The sample with 7% ruthenium showed a catalytic activity with a turnover frequency value of $2.1h^{-1}$ in oxidizing benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde without any other byproducts at $105^{\circ}C$ and 1 atmosphere.
