The ecological studies of the benthic polychaetes were carried out in the follow Sea for the period of August 1982 through February 1986. Special emphasis were placed on quantitative species composition and the importance of polychaetes in the benthic community. Polychaete group ranked numerically high, composing $35.1\~46.4\%$ of the total benthos. In the biomass, echinoderms or mollusks showed as a dominant group, but the range of its seasonal variation was very large. Due to the use of sampling gear, the relative importance of polychaetes was somewhat different. The case of a dredge showed a little lower composition rate of polychaetes than a grab one. This result was caused by high density of benthic animals because the dredge would tow only much more surface sediments than the grab sampler. The present studies included a total of 141 species and the representative polychaetes in this area were Spiophanes bormbyx, Ampharete arctica, Geniada maulata, Nephtys caeca, Nothria iridescens.
The ecological studies of the benthic polychaetes of the Yellow Sea were carried out for five years from August 1982. The emphasis of the research were placed on clarification of the distributional pattern and characteristic species of environmental factors on the polychaete community. Based on the polychaete samples analysed during the study period, it was possible to divide the polychaetes into five ecological groups : 18 warm water, 22 cold water, 20 cosmopolitan, 29 endemic, and 7 amphi-pacific species, Anaitides koreana, Aglaophamus sinensis, Nephtys polyoranchia, Nephtys caeca, Glycera capitata, and Scoloplos armiger seem to be characteristic species of sand bottom, while Haploscoloplos elongatus and Ophelina aulogaster of mud bottom. A total of 6 benthic communities have been recognized from the dominant benthic fauna found. In each benthic communities, dominant and characteristic polychaete species were clarified according to their ecological types. In general, as echinoderms such as Ophiura kinbergi, Amphioplus megapomus, and Luidia quinaria are distributed widely and found in high density, their influence on the distribution of most polychaetes is clearly shown.

This study was carried out to investigate the benthic polychaetous community and benthic ecosystem quality status on the adjacent continental shelf of Jeju Island, and field surveys were conducted at 31 stations in July and August, 2020. The surface sediment was generally composed of muddy sand facies and sandy mud facies, and the average particle size was medium silt (6.1±1.6∅). The benthic polychaetous community revealed a total of 73 species with a mean density of 242 ind./m2. The major dominant species were Notomastus latericeus, Ampharete arctica and Onuphis shirikishinaiensis. By the cluster analysis and nMDS results based on species composition of the benthic polychaetous community, the study area was divided into three station groups arranged from east to west by the water depth and sedimentary facies. The station group located in the west was subdivided into two station groups from south to north. From results of correlation analysis and PCA, it was found that the benthic polychaetous community in the study area had a strong correlation with the sedimentary environment and water depth. The benthic faunal community (or ecosystem) on the adjacent continental shelf of Jeju Island was assessed to be in a healthy state by biotic indices such as AMBI and BPI.
Macrozoobenthic community structure was studied on the mud-tidalflat around Mokpo coastal area, Korea, from September 1995 to May 1996. Ten sampling stations were chosen along the 1km transect with a 100 m intervals. Triple macrozoobenthos sampling were conducted with a stainless box core sampler (size $13{\times}22{\times}30$ cm) at each station on the seasonal basis. A total of 119 species of macrobenthos was sampled with a mean density 2,357 $ind./m^2$ and biomass of 180. 94 $g/m^2$ during the study period. Of these species, there were 51 species of mollusce (43%), 36 of crustaceans (30%), 27 of polychaetes (23%). Molluscs were density-dominant faunal group with a mean density of 1,804 $ind./m^2$, comprising of 75% of the total density of the benthic animals. It was followed by polychaetes with 347 $ind./m^2$ (15% of the total density). Molluscs were biomass-dominant faunal group with a mean biomass of 147.51 $g/m^2$ (82% of the total biomass). The number of species, abundance and biomass showed increasing trends toward the lower intertidal stations from the higher stations. Major dominant species were Musculista senhousia (bivalve), Capitellidae spp. (polychaetes) with a density of 1,640 $ind./m^2$ and 179 $ind./m^2$ , respectively. The density of M. senhousia was more than 63% of the total density of benthic organism on the tidal area. Small gastropod Cerithideopsilla umumriensis was another dominant epifaunal species between st.1 and 2 with a mean density of 100 $ind./m^2$. Cluster analysis showed that the benthic community could be divided into three stational groups, that is, upper, middle and lower groups by the exposure duration.

This study was carried out in order to investigate the distribution and species composition of benthic polychaetous community in northern Kyeonggi Bay in September 1995. Mean density of benthic animals was 557 indiv./$m^2$. Benthic polychaetes were the most dominant faunal group, comprising 60 species with a mean density of 488 indiv./$m^2$. Benthic polychaetes were most abundant in Yumha Channel centering on Incheon Harbor, whereas relatively poor in the intertidal zones fringing Yongjong Island and Songdo area, and in the offshore main channel. The most dominant polychaete was Heteromastus filiformis (47.3% of polychaetous community), followed by Nephtys palybranchia, Tharyx sp., Sternaspis scutata and so on. Kyeonggi Bay could be divided into 4 regions from cluster analysis based on the dominant species composition: offsea/channel region, Incheon Harbor, intertidal zone of Yongjong Island, and intertidal zone of Songdo area. Highest species number and diversity index (H') were recorded at offsea/channel region, whereas highest faunal density at Incheon Harbor. Incheon Harbor was characterized by high abundance of H. filiformis. Compared with the previous studies carried out in Kyeonggi Bay, faunal density and species number have little changed for the recent 10 years. Dominant species was different between each study, but has been among opportunistic species of small-sized polychaetes belonging to capitellids, cirratulids or spionids. These results indicate that Kyeonggi Bay has been organically polluted steadily; specifically, this study reveals that Incheon Harbor has been the center of pollution and that the benthic community in the outer sea off Sihwa dike has become unstable.
The spatial distributional pattern of macrobenthic fauna was investigated to assess the summer benthic environmental conditions in Gwangyang Bay, the southern coast of Korea. The macrobenthic faunal community from 38 sites in Gwangyang Bay comprised 154 species and showed an overall mean density of 1,280 individuals $m^{-2}$. Polychaetes were the most important component of the macrofaunal community in species richness, abundance and biomass. The dominant species in abundance were polychaetes like Tharyx sp. (44.8%), Lumbrineris longifolia (14.0%), Heteromastus filiformis (3.6%), a mussel Mytilus edulis, and an amphipod crustacean Corophium sinense. The abundance and biomass in the western part of the bay were lower than those in the channel regions and mouth of the bay. The community indices showed the same trend in the spatial distribution with the abundance and species richness. All macrobenthic faunas were assigned into a specific functional group according to their ecological responses to the environmental stress. The benthic community health based on the Benthic Pollution Index (BPI) or Biotic Coefficient (BC) seemed to be in the normal to unbalanced er transitional condition, indicated by the dominance of small polychaete worms like Tharyx sp. in the mouth part of the bay.

The East Sea is almost entirely composed of sandy facies, and the facies type is the major factor influencing benthic polychaete communities. There have been few studies of the effects of environmental factors on benthic polychaetes in thermal discharge areas consisting of different sediment types. This study identified the spatial distribution patterns based on the species composition and distribution of benthic polychaete communities, and the environmental factors influencing benthic polychaetes near power plants were investigated. The polychaete communities in the Uljin, Hupo, and Gori coastal areas near the power plants in the East Sea were seasonally investigated from August 2006 to February 2013. As a result, 283 species were collected. The dominant species were Spiophanes bombyx, Magelona japonica, Lumbrineris longifolia, and Sternaspis scutata. Spiophanes bombyx was the dominant species at Uljin and Hupo, but M. japonica was the dominant species at Gori. Two dominant species from the coastal waters of the East Sea, Lumbrineris longifolia and M. japonica, were rare in the power plant water intake or drainage areas. Cluster analysis was performed to divide the study area into groups by the total organic carbon content, sediment grain size and facies patterns. This study suggests that the community structures of polychaetes are more affected by the total organic carbon, grain size of sediment and facies than by disturbance from thermal discharge, which only affected the polychaete community near power plant drainage areas.
The present study was carried out to apprehend that the pollutants originating from Jinhae Industrial Complex affect benthic polychaetous community in the northern Jinhae bay. An investigation on the macrobenthic community in Jinhae bay was conducted in September, December of 2002 and March of 2003. The benthic fauna showed mean density of 2,151 ind. $m^{-2}$ in September of 2002, 2,427 ind. $m^{-2}$ in December of 2002 and 2,394 ind. $m^{-2}$ in March of 2003. Major faunal groups are polychaetes, crustaceans and mollusks, corresponding to $73.7\%,\;12.0\%\;and\;11.7\%,$ in total mean density during all of the sampling season, respectively. The most abundant species was Lumbrineris longifolia $(24.85\%),$ followed by Tharyx sp. $(21.70\%),$ Mesochaetopterus sp. $(6.20\%),$ Heteromastus filiformis $(5.39\%),$ Prionospio sp. $(5.18\%),$ Clycinde sp. $(4.29\%),$ etc. Tharyx sp. was the highest abundant species in September of 2002, and Lumbrineris longifolia was the dominant species in another sampling seasons. The density and the species number of polychaetes were high around Chori Is. and poor near Jinhae Industrial Complex area. Cluster analysis based on the species composition showed that Jinhae bay could be divided into three regions except in March of 2003. In December of 2002, there are very distinct regions by the cluster analysis. The density of benthic polychaetes in Jinhae bay was higher than that in the other coastal area of Korea, due to the predominance by some of opportunistic species, such as Lumbrineris longifolia, Tharyx sp. and Heteromastus filiformis, etc. It means that the study area were in the process of organic enrichment.
We investigated the benthic polychaete assemblage in Gwangyang Bay and Yeosu Sound in February 1997. The sediment was an almost entirely muddy facies. The benthic macrofauna comprised 295 species occurring at a mean density of 875 $indiv./m^2$. Polychaetes were the major faunal component; there were 94 species at mean density 765 $indiv./m^2$. The highest abundance and species richness occurred in the Myodo south and north channels, in the mouth of Gwangyang Bay, and in the Noryang channel mouth. The most abundant polychaete was Tharyx sp. (47.9%), followed in rank order by Heteromastus filiformis (9.6%), Melinna cristata (9.3%), and Lumbrineris longifolia (7.3%). Cluster analysis divided the study area into four station groups based on station similarities in benthic polychaete assemblages: the Glycinde-Prionospio cluster in the western inner bay, the H. filiformis cluster in the middle inner bay, the Melinna-Lumbrineris cluster in the Myodo south-north channel, and the Tharyx cluster in the eastern main channel region. The sediment type of Gwangyang Bay has changed gradually from sandy to muddy. Dominant species have also changed from Chone teres and Lagis bocki to Tharyx sp., which is a potential organic pollution indicator.

In order to evaluate the relationship between geochemical characteristics and benthic facies of the sediments from the Oenaro Island where red tide proliferation is first observed every year including this year, surface and short multiple core sediment samples were analyzed in terms of geochemical and benthic facies variation. The contents of organic carbon, carbonate, and sulfide gas were relatively low. The variation in C/N ratios, which indicate nature of organic carbon, suggested that the organic carbon recorded in the study area is composed of mixtures of marine and terrigenous organic matters. The concentration of minor elements found at the surface and multiple core sediment samples were also low as well as the enrichment factors(Ef) for the seven heavy metals indicated that the sediment of this area is not polluted significantly. The macrobenthic faunal community comprised 61 species, and their mean density was 708 ind./m2. Polychaete worms were major taxa of this benthic community. A crustacean amphipod, Melita sp. was the most abundant species accounted for 20.7% of total abundance, and the small polychaetes such as Heteromastus filiformis, Paralacydonia poradoxa, Magelona japonica and Sigambra tentaculata were the next dominant species. The macrobenthos around the Oenaro Island were more diverse and abundant than that in Gamak Bay. The benthic communities in the study area sustained somewhat different species composition based on the cluster analysis and the MDS ordination. The benthic community health condition at three stations seemed to be unbalanced, and slightly polluted based on the biological index such as BPI and BC. There was no clear relationship between the geochemistry characteristic and the benthic faunal facies attributed by the micro-algal blooms in this coastal area.
