원형으로 굽은 광도파로의 low bending loss를 위한 trench 구조설계: 원통좌표계 FD-BPM (A Trench Structure for Low Bending Loss of Bent Optical Waveguides)

  • 원통좌표계에서의 FD-BPM(finite difference-beam propagation method)을 이용하여 굽은 광도파로의 bending loss를 계산하였다. Bending loss를 최소화하기 위해 trench구조를 적용하였으며 다음의 세가지 측면에서 해석하였다. 1)trench구조가 없을때 곡률반경에 따른 bending loss, 2)폭과 위치가 일정한 trench구조가 있을때 곡률반경과 굴절율차에 따른 bending loss, 3)trench의 위치가 일정할 때 trench의 폭에 따른 bending loss를 계산하였다.

  • Bulged-type bends with low bending loss are newly proposed, and the FD-BPM is made use of for designing optimum structure. How to evaluate bending loss of conventional bends and how to improve the bending structure based on the phase compensation concept are described in genral. Besides simulation results for the bulged-type bends, results for the coupled-type bends and the chamfered-type bends show the most superior performance in terms of not only the bending loss but also the design tolerance.

  • Superconductor is developed for applications in high-power devices such as power-transmission cables, transformers, motor and generators. In such applications, HTS tapes are subjected to various kinds of stress or strain. AC loss is also important consideration for many large-scale superconducting devices. In the fabrication of the devices, the critical current $(I_c)$ of the high temperature superconductor degrades due to many reasons including the tension applied by bending and thermal contraction. These bending or tension reduces the $I_c$ of superconducting wire and the $I_c$ degradation affects the AC loss of the wire. The $I_c$ degradation and AC loss (self field loss) of Bi-2223 HTS and Coated conductor were measured under tension and bending conditions at 77K and self-field.

  • This study discussed the mechanical properties such as bending and shear of polyester fabric treated with a several weight reduction machine. With the increase in the rate of weight loss, the bending rigidity of the warp and weft of treated fabric decreased regardless of the weight reduction machine. At 6.5% weight loss, the bending rigidity of warp and weft yarn decreased to $0.035\;gfcm^2/cm$ and $0.017\;gfcm^2/cm$, respectively, and these values show 54% and 94% of their untreated warp and weft. At same rate of the weight loss, the bending rigidity of polyester fabric treated with C.D.R slightly higher than that of the tank type or liquor-flow type. On the other hand, below 6.5% weight loss, the shear rigidity of the warp and weft of the treated fabric rapidly decreased. But with the increase in the above 6.5% rate of weight loss, the decreasing tendency of the shear rigidity declined. At same rate of the weight loss, the shear rigidity of fabric treated with tank type nearly equal to the that of the liquor flow type. But at same rate of the weight loss, the shear rigidity of the fabric treated with C.D.R type higher than that of the tank or liquor-flow type.

In-line Variable Optical Attenuator Based on the Bending of the Tapered Single Mode Fiber

  • We propose a simple in-line variable optical attenuator (VOA) based on the bending effect of tapered single mode fibers. The influence of the taper structure and the reflective index of the external medium surrounding the taper region on the bending loss of the tapered fiber have been investigated experimentally. An attenuation range exceeding 35 dB and a very low excess loss of < 0.2 dB at 1550 nm were achieved. The measured polarization dependent loss of the present VOA at the attenuation level of 10 dB, 20 dB, and 30 dB were 0.1 dB, 0.2 dB, and 0.5 dB, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effect of weight loss of polyethylene terephthalate(PET) fabrics on the mechanical properties such as bending and shear. In order to compare the effect of treatment machine on the mechanical properies of treated PET fabrics, PET fabrics were hydrolyzed with NaOH aqueous solution using Tank machine and Liquor flow machine, respectively. The results were as follows : 1. The bending rigidity and shear stiffness of hydrolyzed PET fabric decreased markedly up to about 10% weight loss regardless of treatment machines. At the above 10% weight loss, the variation of these properties is nearly unchanged. In addition, the bending hysteresis and shear hysteresis also showed similar trend. 2. Weft density change of PET fabrics treated with Liquor flow machine decreased by 1pick/inch. It is assumed that this is attributed to the tension during the treatment of Liquor flow machine. On the other hand, the weft density change of PET fabrics treated with Tank machine is scarcely influeneced by the weight loss. While warp density of PET fabrics treated with Liquor flow machine had no change with weight loss, warp density of PET fabrics treated with Tank machine decreased by 6pick/inch due to the tension. 3. The bending rigidity and shear stiffness of PET fabrics hydrolyzed with liquor flow machine slightly higher than with Tank m/c at the above 10% weight loss. It is assumed that this is caused by the increasement of the crossing pressure of warp and weft yarn and contact points of filaments in the yarns. Also, the bending and shear hysteresis of PET fabrics treated with Tank machine were higher than that of liquor flow machine.

  • 본 논문은 바이메탈(bi-metal)에 부착된 열확장 코어 광섬유의 높은 구부림 손실 효과를 이용한 광섬유 온도 센서를 제안 및 구현하였다. 바이메탈(bi-metal plate)의 온도 변화에 의한 변형은 열확장 코어 광섬유의 구부림 손실을 발생시킨다. 실험결과 소자의 감도와 측정범위는 열확장 코어 광섬유의 구조를 조절하여 제어 될 수 있음을 보였다. 소자의 제조공정이 상세하게 기술되었다.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the reduction in bending properties of radiata pine sapwood associated with incipient brown-rot decay. Decayed bending specimens by Tyromyces palustris and Gloeophyllum trabeum for varoious periods were tested destructively. Brown-rot decay by T. palustris and G. trabeum caused serious reduction in bending properties at very early stages of decay, with about 30 percent decrease in bending strength observed for only 1~2 percent weight loss. In general, the reduction in bending properties caused by T. palustris was somewhat greater than that by G. trabeum. Work to maximum load was reduced most severely and rapidly from the onset of decay, while modulus of elasticity showed a much more moderate rate of reduction. Modulus of rupture was affected by decay to a greater extent than was modulus of elasticity. Since a relatively strong correlation between weight loss and bending strength was observed, the residual strength of decayed wood can be predicted by weight loss due to decay. The results of this study indicate that very early stages of brown-rot decay reduce the bending strength significantly. Thus, it is recommended that all load-bearing members in wooden structures, especially those that are periodically wetted, should be inspected regularly to prevent a sudden failure even though there are no definite signs of decay.

Development of a Practical Two-Microphone Impedance Tube Method for Sound Transmission Loss Measurement of Sound Isolation Materials

  • This study developed a practical two-microphone impedance tube method to measure the sound transmission loss of sound isolation materials without the use of an expensive reverberation room or an acoustic intensity probe. In order to evaluate the validation and applicability of the two-microphone impedance tube method, sound transmission losses for several sound isolation materials with different surface density and bending stiffness were measured, and the measured values were compared with the results from the reverberation room method and the theory. From the experimental results, it was found that the accuracy of sound transmission loss obtained by the impedance tube method depends upon the diameter size of the impedance tube (i.e., tested sample size). For sound isolation materials having relatively large bending stiffness such as acryl, wood, and aluminum plates, it was found that the impedance tube method proposed by this study was not valid to measure the sound transmission loss. On the other hand, for sound isolation materials having relatively small bending stiffness such as rubber, polyvinyl, and asphalt sheets, the comparisons of transmission loss between the results from the impedance tube method and the theory showed a good agreement within the range of the frequencies satisfying the normal incidence mass law. Therefore, the two-microphone impedance tube method proposed by this study can be an effective measurement method to evaluate the sound transmission loss for soft sound isolation sheets having relatively small bending stiffness.

광섬유 굽힘 손실을 이용한 직물 기반의 광섬유 촉각센서 개발 (Development of fabric-based optical fiber tactile sensor using optical fiber bending loss)

  • In this paper the tactile sensor system based on the bending loss of optical fiber sensor is presented. The sensor array was designed with fabric structure. The optical measuring system was composed of LED for light source and CCD camera for the signal light detector. Performance of this tactile sensor system was evaluated in various environments and compared with Harmon's design criteria. The result shows that load range is 3 g$\sim$100 g, resolution is 1.5 g, hysteresis error is 1.5%. The response linearity is good and flexibility of sensor array is excellent.
