Marine traffic system is composed of ship, ship's operators and traffic environment The navigation channel is a part of traffic environment and the design of channel is a crucial factor for safe navigation This paper aims to evaluate ship-handling difficulty in straight and bend channels with an Environmental Stress model(ES-model). The ES-model is used to evaluate ship handling difficulty quantitatively on the basis of the ship operator's subjective judgement for safety in navigation The calculation of ES value was made on the basis of three factors such as channel width, ship's length and speed in straight and channels for safe navigation. The interrelation between factors was analyzed and reasonable design standards of channel width, ship's length and speed were proposed for safe navigation of ship in bend channel.
To design ship channels is one of important factors for planning and developing a port. Bends in channels should be avoided if possible, but the channel should be widened, if channel bend is unavoidable, considering the swept path of a ship for safe passage. In this study, Variable Bumper Area(VBA) model is applied to determine the channel widths in bends. The result of this study shows that the width of the bend may be designed as nearly same size of that in straight channel in case that the angle of deflection is less than 30 degrees, and that of the bend with 60 degrees deflection should be widened based on the length of the largest ship using the channel and the angle of deflection.

This paper aims to develop the numerical model for prediction of the channel migration by analyzing of sediment and flow characteristics with patterns of channel in alluvial rivers. Flow in rivers constitutes to be the meandering or the braided form and rarely straight channel through morphologically stable patterns with mutual actions between the flowing water and bed materials. In order to develop the model for simulation of the channel migration, the channels are divided into two types with positive or negative sign by the direction of curvature radius of the centerline channel ($r_c$). That is, the single bend-channel consists of only one curvature of positive or negative sign and the multi-bend channel consists of two more curvatures of positive or negative sign, respectively. The model analyzes the sediment and flow characteristics under the influence of superelevation, spiral motion, irregularity in bed topography and depth-averaged velocity of channels. For reliability of this model, the single bend-channel and the multi bend channel are compared with experiment data in other models and the measured field data in the Keum-River, respectively. As a result, the both com parisians turn out to be excellent.
A computer model was proposed to simulate channel changes and bed material sorting of the meandering channels with different grain size in time and space simultaneously. The bed at the outside of the meandering channel with mixed sediments was scoured deeply and composed of coarser materials, and at the inside was aggradated and composed of finer materials. The sorting process started at the upstream inflection point and was finished at the downstream inflection point. At the natural with complicated boundaries and non-uniform grain sizes, the bed near the outside at the bend and narrow width was scoured deeper with coarse materials than in the channel with uniform grain sizes. The point bars showed lip at the inside near the bend and the bed materials were finer The bed at the outside near the bend and in the narrow width was scoured deeply with the coarser materials.
Leaf movements in nyctinastic plants are produced by changes in the turgor of extensor and flexor cells, collectively called motor cells, in opposing regions of the leaf movement organ, the pulvinus. In Samanea saman, a tropical tree of the legume family, extensor cells shrink and flexor cells swell to bend the pulvinus and fold the leaf at night, whereas extensor cells swell and flexor cells shrink to straighten the pulvinus and extend the leaf in the daytime. These changes are caused by ion fluxes primarily of potassium and chloride, across the plasma membrane of the motor cells. These ion fluxes are regulated by exogenous light signals and an endogenous biolgical clock. Inward-directed K$^+$ channels are closed in extensor and open in flexor cells in the dark period, while these channels are open in extensor and closed in flexor cells in the light period. Blue light opens the closed K$^+$ channels in extensor and closes the open them in flexor cells during darkness. Illumination of red light followed by darkness induces to open the closed K$^+$ channels in flexor and to close the open K$^+$ channels in extensor cells in the light. The dynamics of K$^+$ channels in motor cells that are controlled by light signals are consistent with the behavior of the pulvini in intact plants. Therefore, these cell types are an attractive model system to elucidate regulations of ion transports and their signal transduction pathways in plants. This review is focused on light-controlled ion movements and regulatory mechanisms involved in phosphoinositide signaling in leaf movements in nyctinastic plants.

In general, curved bends raises a risk of overtopping due to floods and also threatens a bank safety due to a local flow concentration. This study aims to test the applicability of CCHE2D model for experimental flumes with two different types of bends and then investigate flow characteristics in the sharply-curved bend of a natural channel. The results demonstrated that the percent error of water level was within 4.9% for experimental flume applications and the simulated spatial distribution of velocity matched the observed results very closely. The calibrated model based on the experimental flumes was also applied to analyze the flow characteristics in natural channel bends of the Daeyu reach, located in a downstream of the Youngdam Dam. The results showed that in upstream, the simulated water level by the CCHED was observed at 1.5 m higher than the 1-D numerical model (HEC-RAS) result since the HEC-RAS could not represent the bend geometry effect on streamflow. However, the calculated results by several empirical formula support that the CCHE2D is suitable for the super elevation simulation as well as flood stage and velocity in a natural channel bend.

Transverse bed slope in bend is a subject of scientific investigation since it provides the necessary information for channel design and protection of hydraulic structures (bank, bridge, etc), and study of river morphology. In this paper, selected models were examined and compared for the value of prediction of the transverse bed slope in curved alluvial channels(project area), by using field data, and fitting model was proposed. All models that related the local transverse bed slope to mean flow characteristics were alike in the sense that they predicted the local transverse bed slope to be proportional to the ratio between depth and radius of curvature. The difference among the models was related with the factor of proportionality, K. Also, measured transverse bed slope was correlated to mean velocity, maximum depth, and density Froude number in channel bend. In this paper selected models were compared for the prediction of the transverse bed slope using Odgaard's experiment (obtained in Sacramento River bend), so Odgaard89 model was closely related with real transverse bed slope.
This study investigates the impact of riparian vegetation in the floodplain on channel stability, changes in bend curvature, and meandering channel migration. In channels with riparian vegetation, over time, meander width remains relatively constant, but selective bank erosion leads to meander development and downstream movement. During this process, bank erosion and changes in the riverbed are not significant, and the channel maintains relatively constant conditions with reduced sediment discharge and minimal variability. As the density of vegetation increases, bank erosion rates decrease. The erosion rates along the riverbanks increase with the density of vegetation on the floodplain, thus affecting the development of meanders. This factor notably contributes to enhancing riverbank stability and influencing channel changes through floodplain vegetation. Bank erosion rates and dimensionless bend curvature are greatest when there is no riparian vegetation but decrease in conditions with vegetation. Furthermore, the relationship between lateral migration rate and dimensionless bend curvature is similar to that of bank erosion rates. Therefore, riparian vegetation enhances channel stability, influencing bank erosion, meander curvature, and meander migration.

In order to investigate characteristics of the primary flow and the secondary currents in meandering channels, the laboratory experiments were conducted in S-curved channels with angle of bend, $150^{\circ}$, and sinuosity of 1.52. The experimental conditions was decided varying average depth and velocity. Under these experimental conditions, spatial variations of the secondary currents in multiple bends were observed. The experimental results revealed that the distribution of primary flow in straight section is symmetric without respect to the experimental condition and the maximum velocity line of the primary flow occurs along the shortest path in experimental channel, supporting the result of previous works. The secondary currents in second bend became more developed than those in first bend. Particularly, the outer bank cell developed distinctively and the secondary current intensity was low at the straight section and high at the bends, periodically. Also, the secondary current intensity at the bends was as twice to three times as that at the straight section, and has its maximum value at the second bend. The turbulent flow characteristics of meandering channel was investigated with turbulent intensity of the primary flow and Reynolds shear stress. It was observed that the turbulent intensity is increasing when the velocity deviation of the primary flow is large whereas Reynolds shear stress increases when both the velocity deviation of the primary flow and the secondary current are large.
A numerical model which can analyze the flow and bed topography characteristics of a single bend and continuous one was suggested using the equations of mass, momentum, the vertical distribution of secondary flow, and the transverse bed slope. The calculated flow and bed topography characteristic values were compared with the experimental data in a single bend, and the predicted path of maximum streamwise velocity in continuous bends also compared with the Vadnal and Chang's data. The comparisons gave good results. A curved channel with 180 degrees was used. Sand and anthracite were selected as bed materials in the movable bed experiments. The model application of this model to the sand bed and the anthracite one accorded well with the observed values in the experiments. This model was proved to be useful for predicting the flow and bed topography with the change of bed materials. The results of this research could be used to construct and control curved channels as a fundamental information.mation.
