In this study, the effect of presence and distribution of masonry infill walls on the mid-rise steel frame structures having soft ground storey was evaluated by implementing finite element (FE) methods. Masonry infill walls were distributed randomly in the upper storey keeping the ground storey open without any infill walls, thus generating the worst case scenario for seismic events. It was observed from the analysis that there was an increase in the seismic design forces, moments and base shear in presence of randomly distributed masonry infill walls which underlines that these design values need to be amplified when designing a mid-rise soft ground storey steel frame with randomly distributed masonry infill. In addition, it was found that the overstrength related force modification factor increased and the ductility related force modification factor decreased with the increase in the amount of masonry infilled bays and panels. These must be accounted for in the design of mid-rise steel frames. Based on the FE analysis results on two mid-rise steel frames, design equations were proposed for determining the over strength and the ductility related force modification factors. However, it was recommended that these equations to be generalized for other steel frame structure systems based on an extensive analysis.

This study introduces a general reliability-based, performance-based design framework to design frames regarding their uncertainties and user-defined design goals. The Iterative-R method extracted from the main framework can designate a proper R (i.e., response modification factor) satisfying the design goal regarding target reliability index and pre-defined probability of collapse. The proposed methodology is based on FEMA P-695 and can be used for all systems that FEMA P-695 applies. To exemplify the method, multiple three-dimensional, four-story steel special moment-resisting frames are considered. Closed-form relationships are fitted between frames' responses and the modeling parameters. Those fits are used to construct limit state functions to apply reliability analysis methods for design safety assessment and the selection of proper R. The frameworks' unique feature is to consider arbitrarily defined probability density functions of frames' modeling parameters with an insignificant analysis burden. This characteristic enables the alteration in those parameters' distributions to meet the design goal. Furthermore, with sensitivity analysis, the most impactful parameters are identifiable for possible improvements to meet the design goal. In the studied examples, it is revealed that a proper R for frames with different levels of uncertainties could be significantly different from suggested values in design codes, alarming the importance of considering the stochastic behavior of elements' nonlinear behavior.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of nutritional intervention for modifying the dietary behavior of breast cancer patients. The study was conducted at Gangnam Severance Hospital from December 2015 to May 2016. The subjects of this study were 30 female breast cancer patients. To conduct this study, dietary behaviors and weight changes were measured, and frequency of exercise, alcohol drinking, and use of supplements were investigated. The results are summarized as follows: Average age and rate of monthly weight loss were $54.3{\pm}9.3years$ and $1.4{\pm}3.5%$, respectively. After nutritional intervention, dietary behavior modification score increased from $2.00{\pm}0.45points$ to $2.76{\pm}0.18points$ out of 3 (p<0.001). After intervention, the proportion of alcohol drinkers among patients decreased from 20% to 0%, and that of patients who exercise frequently increased from 53% to 97%. The percentage of supplement users decreased from 40% to 20%. In consideration of the above results, nutritional intervention and dietary behavior modification for breast cancer patients are very important to prevent recurrence of breast cancer.
A series of biologically active phosphopeptides were synthesized and their behavior in tandem mass spectrometry have been investigated. The structure identifications of other unusual peptides such as sulphated, glycosylated, lipoidal, and backbone modified peptides have been carried out. For all tested peptides, the structural modification could be determined directly by measurement of the absolute molecular weight in combination with collision-induced-dissociation in tandem mass spectrometry.

This paper aims to develop response modification factors for stiffness degrading structures by incorporating soil-structure interaction effects. A comprehensive parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of key SSI parameters, natural period of vibration, ductility demand and hysteretic behavior on the response modification factor of soil-structure systems. The nonlinear dynamic response of 6300 soil-structure systems are studied under two ensembles of accelograms including 20 recorded and 7 synthetic ground motions. It is concluded that neglecting the stiffness degradation of structures can results in up to 22% underestimation of inelastic strength demands in soil-structure systems, leading to an unexpected high level of ductility demand in the structures located on soft soil. Nonlinear regression analyses are then performed to derive a simplified expression for estimating ductility-dependent response modification factors for stiffness degrading soil-structure systems. The adequacy of the proposed expression is investigated through sensitivity analyses on nonlinear soil-structure systems under seven synthetic spectrum compatible earthquake ground motions. A good agreement is observed between the results of the predicted and the target ductility demands, demonstrating the adequacy of the expression proposed in this study to estimate the inelastic demands of SSI systems with stiffness degrading structures. It is observed that the maximum differences between the target and average target ductility demands was 15%, which is considered acceptable for practical design purposes.
Mixed structures consist of two parts: a lower part and an upper part. The lower part is usually made of concrete while the upper part is made of steel. Analyzing these structures is complicated and code-based design of them has many associated problems. In this research, the seismic behavior of mixed structures which have reinforced concrete frames and shear walls in their lower storeys and steel frames with bracing in their upper storeys were studied. For this purpose, seventeen structures in three groups of 5, 9 and 15 storey structures with different numbers of concrete and steel storeys were designed. Static pushover analysis, linear dynamic analysis and incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) using 15 earthquake records were performed by OpenSees software. Seismic parameters such as period, response modification factor and ductility factor were then obtained for the mixed (hybrid) structures using more than 4600 nonlinear dynamic analysis and used in the regression analysis for achieving proper formula. Finally, some formulas, effective in designing such structures, are presented for the mentioned parameters. According to the results obtained from this research, the response modification factor values of mixed structures are lower compared to those of steel or concrete ones with the same heights. This fact might be due to the irregularities of stiffness, mass, etc., at different heights of the structure. It should be mentioned that for the first time, the performance and seismic response of such structures were studied against real earthquake accelerations using nonlinear dynamic analysis, andresponse modification factor was obtained by IDA.
Mudstone is a very common rock that, when in contact with water, can exhibit considerable volume change and breakdown. This behavior of mudstone is frequently encountered in geotechnical engineering and has a considerable influence on infrastructure stability. This is particularly important in the present work, which focuses on mitigating the harmful properties of mudstone. The samples studied are of Permian Age mudstone from Shandong Province, China. Modification tests using organic silicone additive material were carried out. The mechanisms of physical properties modification of mudstone were comparatively studied using corresponding test methods, and the modification mechanism of organic silicone additive material acting on mudstone was analyzed. The following conclusions were drawn. The surface texture and characters of mudstone changed dramatically, surface character turns from hydrophilic to hydrophobic after organic silicone additive material modification. The changes in the surface character indicate a reduction in the water sensitivity of mudstone. After modification, the shape of porosity and fracture of mudstone changed unremarkable, and the total and free expansion ratios decreased obviously, whereas the strength increased markedly.
A modified version of SST turbulence model is suggested to simulate unsteady separated flows over oscillating airfoils. The original SST model, which shows good performance in predicting various steady flows, often results in oscillatory behavior of aerodynamic loads in large separated flow regions. It is shown that this oscillatory behavior is due to the adoption of the absolute value of vorticity in generalizing the original model. As a remedy, a modification is made such that the vorticity in the original SST model is replaced by strain rate. The present model is verified for a mild separated airfoil flow at fixed angle of incidence and for unsteady flowfields about oscillating airfoils. The results are compared with BSL model and original SST model. It is illustrated that the present model gives a better agreement with the experimental results than other two models.
Radiation of Nd-YAG laser changes and refines the surface microstructure of steels, which gives rise to enhancement of hardness and resulting wear resistance. In the present work, the effect of processing parameters during the surface modification with laser on the wear behavior of the SM45C steel was studied by means of wear testing. The counter material was alumina ceramics. The microstructure observation revealed the dependence of molten depth and width on the defocusing distance. The laser modification of steel surface give rise to improved wear resistance in the testing speed range of either <0.2 m/s or >0.9 m/s Material transfer from steel was wear observated the surface of counter material when testing speed was lower than 0.7 m/s.
This study was conducted to contribute to the expansion of activity areas for school nurses in the field of health promotion services whose importance are increasing daily. To achieve such goals the researcher proposed that health promotion programs for obesity management in overweight schoolchildren conducted by literature review to apply to school settings. In this program, the principal components developed a behavior modification program and an exercise program, which could be educated and managed by a nursing staff during for 9 weeks, three times per week, 60 minutes each. The program consisted of exercise, health education. health counseling, and a direct nursing care. This kind of approach may support the need of behavior modification programs and exercise programs on a regular base via the social organization, which may mean an intentional change of life style. A comprehensive approach to health promotion services proposed by this research would contribute greatly to the effectiveness of school health services and to promote health in overweight schoolchildren.
