  • This paper presents a parametric study on the behavior of integral abutment PSC beam bridge. An integral abutment bridge is a simple span or multiple span continuous deck type bridge having the deck integral with the abutment wall. The rational structural model and design load combinations accounting for each construction stage are proposed. It can be used for defining the effect of earth pressure and temperature change in the design process including for determining maximum flexural responses. The bending moment at each response location due to the design load combination is investigated according to the change of flexural rigidity of piles and abutment height. The flexural responses of proposed model are computed for the cases of applying the Rankine passive earth pressure and the earth pressure based on the soil-structure interaction respectively, and the results are discussed.

  • This paper analyzes organizational behavior of an established firm when disruptive innovation, a change in product architecture, occurs on a previous product. For the analysis, the paper analyzes and compares the behavior of an established fm through product trajectories between NEC (an established firm) and Toshiba (a new entrance) in the Japanese laptop computers industry. An established firm that has developed and produced a previous product is difficult in adapting to a disruptive innovation due to accumulated immense knowledge through a previous product. By using regression model in the product trajectory analysis, the paper analyzes the behavior of established firms. Product trajectory means a pattern of product strategy shown in a series of products. Two facts found in the paper are as follows. First, though NEC was able to develop a laptop computer at the same time with Toshiba, it was restricted by the resources of a previous product in the early stage. Second, possibility of teaming trap in the adapting process was found. The paper found the risk that too much commitment in one evolution stage would prohibit the adapting behavior in the next evolution stage.

  • Purpose: Consumers have unique behaviors that are classified based on their interests and considerations before buying. They are predicted will change due to the pandemic of COVID-19. This study provides insights for retailers about the dynamic of consumer behavior before and during the pandemic, including future predictions. Research design, data and methodology: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement was applied in this study. Seven studies that were selected from five databases meet the criteria for cohort and cross-sectional analyses of gender, age, store types, and environmental concerns. Results: Consumer's gender and age contribute to consumer behavior change. Both offline and online stores can be integrated as omnichannel rather than substitute each other. Product distribution and consumer budget need to be reevaluated by retailers, while internet security is the most essential factor when developing their online transactions. Conclusions: COVID-19 pandemic has a significant impact on changing consumer behavior in most countries. Retailers are encouraged to adapt to the changes by modifying their business model with technology. However, it is still speculated and cannot be generalized due to different cultural and contextual factors. Future studies are always needed to synchronize along with the transition of consumers' behavior.

  • In this study, we analyzed lateral behavior of connected foundation for transmission tower in clay. For this study, we performed model lateral load test, measured load-displacement curve of connected foundation. For the tests, we manufactured connected foundation model that consider a change of rigidity, installed various measuring sensors for understanding of elements and general foundation behavior. From the test results, we measured load capacities using various methods, compared and analyzed these capacities.

  • In using a performance model of a torque converter determined by its gemetric condition, it is possible that the analysis of two arbitrary converters produces the the same results because of the same value of equivalent parameters despite their different shapes. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the effect of shape factor on dynamic perfomance, and equivalent parameters reoresenting a performace model of a converter should into its defined by the behavior of flow field. In this study, torus flow of a torque converter is changed into its equivalent system defined by the behavior of flow, and govering equations for the system are presented and used for analysis. Equivalent parameters are obtained from the results of flow analysis and are compared with parameters of one dimensional performance model. The influence that shape change of a converter has on the behavior of flow and the equivalent parameters is studied qualitatively.

  • The inflow rate is of interest in the design of underground structures such as tunnels and buried pipes below the groundwater table. Soil permeability governing the inflow rate significantly affects the hydro-geological behavior of soils but is difficult to estimate due to its wide range of distribution, nonlinearity and anisotropy. Volume changes induced by stress can cause nonlinear stress-strain behavior, resulting in corresponding permeability changes. In this paper, the nonlinearity and anisotropy of permeability are investigated by conducting Rowe cell tests, and a nonlinear permeability model considering anisotropy was proposed. Model modification and parameter evaluation for field application were also addressed. Significance of nonlinear permeability was illustrated by carrying out numerical analysis of a tunnel. It is highlighted that the effect of nonlinear permeability is significant in soils of which volume change is considerable, and particularly appears in the short-term flow behavior.

  • This paper proposes an improved mathematical model for predicting the frosting behavior on a two-dimensional fin considering the heat conduction of heat exchanger fins under frosting conditions. The model consists of laminar flow equation in airflow, diffusion equation of water vapor for frost layer, and heat conduction equation in fin, and these are coupled together. In this model, the change in three-dimensional airside airflow caused by frost growth is accounted for. The fin surface temperature increased toward the fin tip due to the fin heat conduction. On the contrary, the temperature gradient in the airflow direction(x-dir.) is small throughout the entire fin. The frost thickness in the direction perpendicular to airflow, i.e. z-dir., decreases exponentially toward the fin tip due to non-uniform temperature distribution. The rate of decrease of heat transfer in the airflow direction is high compared to that in the z-direction due to more decrease in the sensible and latent heat rate in x-direction.

  • One solution to prevent deterioration due to expansion joint and to extend lifetime of short span bridges, is jointless integral abutment bridge. To understand behavior of pile foundation of skewed plate girder bridge with integral abutment, finite element analysis was performed for the model of different skew angle from 90。 to 50。. Comparison of stresses at pile and abutment was made for each case. It is found that effect of temperature change is major factor to influence the behavior of skewed integral abutment bridge.

  • The current-voltage characteristics of the semiconducting BaTiO3 ceramics are measured in the range of 0.01∼100 Volt. Non ohmic behavior was observed above Tc. This behavior is not dependent on specimen thickness and is not observed at the incomplete semiconducting sepcimen. From this experiment, non-ohmic behavior of PTC is attributed to Heywang's potential barrier not to space change limited current. In the low voltage range, current-voltage characteristics of PTC ceramics can be explained by Heywang model.

  • In this study a dynamic modeling scheme is presented to derive the probabilistic structure of soil water and plant water stress when subject to stochastic precipitation conditions. The newly developed model has the form of the Fokker-Planck equation, and its applicability as a model for the probabilistic evolution of the soil water and plant water stress is investigated under climate change scenarios. This model is based on the cumulant expansion theory, and has the advantage of providing the probabilistic solution in the form of probability distribution function (PDF), from which one can obtain the ensemble average behavior of the dynamics. The simulation result of soil water confirms that the proposed soil water model can properly reproduce the results obtained from observations, and it also proves that the soil water behaves with consistent cycle based on the precipitation pattern. The plant water stress simulation, also, shows two different PDF patterns according to the precipitation. Moreover, with all the simulation results with climate change scenarios, it can be concluded that the future soil water and plant water stress dynamics will differently behave with different climate change scenarios.
