Flows of water in the environment (e.g. in a river or estuary) generally occur in complex conditions. This complexity can hinder a general understanding of flows and their related sedimentary processes, such as erosion and deposition. To gain insight in simplified, controlled conditions, hydraulic flumes are a popular type of laboratory research equipment. Linear flumes use pumps to recirculation water. This isn't appropriate for the investigation of cohesive sediments as pumps can break fragile cohesive sediment flocs. To overcome this limitation, the rotating annular flume (RAF) was developed. While not having pumps, a side-effect is that unwanted secondary circulations can occur. To counteract this, the top and bottom lid rotate in opposite directions. Furthermore, a larger flume is considered better as it has less curvature and secondary circulation. While only a few RAFs exist, they are important for theoretical research which often underlies numerical models. Many of the first-generation of RAFs have come into disrepair. As new measurement techniques and models become available, there is still a need to research cohesive sediment erosion and deposition in facilities such as a RAF. New RAFs also can have the advantage of being automatic instead of manually operated, thus improving data quality. To further advance our understanding of cohesive sediment erosion and deposition processes, a large, automatic RAF (1.72 m radius, 0.495 m channel depth, 0.275 m channel width) has been constructed at the Hydraulic Laboratory at Chungnam National University (CNU), Korea. The RAF has the ability to simulate both unidirectional (river) and bidirectional (tide) flows with supporting instrumentation for measuring turbulence, bed shear stress, suspended sediment concentraiton, floc size, bed level, and bed density. Here we present the current status and future prospect of the CNU RAF. In the future, calibration of the rotation rate with bed shear stress and experiments with unidirectional and bidirectional flow using cohesive kaolinite are expected. Preliminary results indicate that the CNU RAF is a valuable tool for fundamental cohesive sediment transport research.

In this study, the effects of sediment supply on the downstream of a large dam are investigated using a numerical model. The model simulation shows a good agreement with laboratory experiment results of sediment transport and diffusion from sediment pulses. The water surface changes from the various sediment bed elevations are also simulated using the model. The site which has a relatively stiff bed slope and meandering of a channel is selected as an appropriate location for sediment supply because of its shear stress enough to supply the sediment downstream. The model simulation shows the decrease of channel bed elevation through the simulation period with time. The well-deposition of sediment supplied from the downstream of dam is found in the location where the flow rate is relatively low. A bed relief index is increased with time and it is relatively greater in downstream compared to upstream. The channel bed variability increases as flow rate increases with a greater bed relief index. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of increasing water discharge of a large dam to increase the dynamic of channel bed and thus to enhance the efficiency of channel bed restoration by sediment supply.

In this study, semi-two dimension numerical model(GSTARS 2.1 model) were applied to study on the hydraulic and sedimentologic characteristics of downstream channel section in Dal stream. GSTARS 2.1 model was applied for the four selected sediment transport formulas(Meyer-Peter and Muller, Acker and White's, Engelund and Hanson, Yang formula) from 1984 to 1992 measured data on each section. The simulation results of Meyer-Peter and Muller formula for long-term bed changes are good when compared to the measured data. When quantitatively compared, it appears that the results data is relatively underestimated compared to the 1992 measured data on each section. Using Meyer-Peter and Muller formula, analyse the effects of bed changes by stream tube number.
Catchments soil erosion, one of the most serious problems in the mountainous environment of the world, consists of a complex phenomenon involving the detachment of individual soil particles from the soil mass and their transport, storage and overland flow of rainfall, and infiltration. Sediment size distribution during erosion processes appear to depend on many factors such as rainfall characteristics, vegetation cover, hydraulic flow, soil properties and slope. This study involved laboratory flume experiments carried out under simulated rainfall in a 3.0 m long ${\times}$ 0.8 m wide ${\times}$ 0.7 m deep flume, set at $17^{\circ}$ slope. Five experimental cases, consisting of twelve experiments using three different sediments with two different rainfall conditions, are reported. The experiments consisted of detailed observations of particle size distribution of the out-flow sediment. Sediment water mixture out-flow hydrograph and sediment mass out-flow rate over time, moisture profiles at different points within the soil domain, and seepage outflow were also reported. Moisture profiles, seepage outflow, and movement of overland flow were clearly found to be controlled by water retention function and hydraulic function of the soil. The difference of grain size distribution of original soil bed and the out-flow sediment was found to be insignificant in the cases of uniform sediment used experiments. However, in the cases of non-uniform sediment used experiments the outflow sediment was found to be coarser than the original soil domain. The results indicated that the sediment transport mechanism is the combination of particle segregation, suspension/saltation and rolling along the travel distance.
A relaxed similarity theory which can be applied to river models with movable beds is established by modifying existing theory by Einstein and chien(1954). Experimental data collected from river models with movable beds were used to evaluate the applicability of the proposed theory. Effects of similarity of flow, ΔFΔM, and similarity of sediment movement, ΔFs, were examined by analyzing the behaviour of total river-bed change. The results show that the smaller ΔFΔM or ΔFs is, respectively, the larger total sedimentation is. The modified similarity theory established in this study would be useful and practical whenever it is impossible or very difficult to satisfy strict theoretical requirements concerning the river model experiments with movable beds. Keywords : river model, similarity of flow, similarity of sediment movement, sediment transport, river-bed change.

Semi-two dimension numerical models were applied to study on the hydraulic and sedimentologic characteristics of upstream and downstream channel section in Dal stream. The feature of this paper is (1) to analyse the effects of bed changes by sediment transport formulas, (2) to analyse the effects of bed changes by stream tube. The simulation results of Meyer-peter and Muller formula for long-term bed changes are good when compared to the measured data.
The objective of this study is to analyze the characteristics of flow and bed change at the wide, shallow confluence of the Geum river and Mihocheon, which has different bed slope, height, and sediment concentration condition between the main channel and tributary. RMA-2 and SED2D were used to simulate flow and bed changes at the site. Flow simulations showed that the overall flow velocity, shear layer and vortex generated at the left bank of the confluence increase as the discharge was increased. Sediment transport simulations indicated that because of the high inflow sediment concentration from Mihocheon, sediment concentration in the main river increases after the confluence, the high sediment concentration band was kept along the shear layer boundary and the left bed was aggraded after confluence.
This study has an objective to estimate effect on water-quality enhancement by removal of contaminated river-bed material using a two-dimensional numerical modeling in the Seonakdong River, the Pyunggang River and the Maekdo River. RMA2 and RMA4 models were used for flow and contaminant transport simulation, respectively. After the analysis of the effects of flow restoration plan for the Seonakdong River system made by Lee et al (2008), simulation have been performed about scenarios which contains operations of the Daejeo Gate, the Noksan Gate, the Makdo Gate (on planning), and the Noksan Pumping Station. Because there is no option for elution from bed sediment in the RMA4 model, a simple technique has been used for initial condition modification for elution. The analyses revealed that the effect on water quality improvement due to dredging of bed sediment seemed to be less than 10 % of the total effect. The most efficient measure for the water quality improvement of the river system was the linked operation of water-gates and pumping station.

This study presents prediction and historical analysis of the long-term bed elevation change in the Mankyung-gang River. The study area is a 25 km long reach including middle and lower courses of the Mankyung-gang River. HEC-RAS program was used for numerical predictions, and values of roughness coefficients were calibrated. Then, predictions were made in the two periods, seven years from 1986 to 1993 and twelve years from 1993 to 2005. Simulation results were compared with two sets of measured data for bed elevations. Four sediment transport formulas, namely MPM's, Toffaleti's, MPM-Toffaleti's, and Yang's formula, were tested. Simulation results showed that none of the four sediment transport formulas predicted the bed elevation change in the period of 1986 - 1993. This is related to the fact that dredging work was performed in the upstream reach in the period of 1986 - 1993, and sediment was deposited in this part severely later. However, it was found that MPM-Toffaleti's formula predicted properly the bed elevation change for the period of 1993 - 2005.
The purpose of this study is to simulate the transport of nonuniform sediment considering the hiding-exposure effect numerically. In order to calculate the transport of multi-disperse suspended sediment mixtures, the set of advection-diffusion equations for each particle class is solved. The applicability of the numerical model is examined by comparing the simulation results with experimental data. In this study, we calculate the vertical distribution of total concentration of sediment particles using two approaches: (1) by considering the mixture as represented by a single size; and (2) by combining the concentration of the sediment corresponding to several particle size classes; From the simulation results, it is shown that both approaches calculate reasonable results due to the narrow range of size distribution. Under the condition of nonuniform sediment, the critical shear stress of the sediment particle is influenced by the size-selective entrainment, i.e., hiding-exposure effect. It is shown in this study that the effect of hiding-exposure effect on the erosion rates of fine sand is negligibly small.
