Theoretical analysis is carried out for the beat frequency generation phenomena in the IMPATT diodes an4 the experimental studies are given in parrallel. The theory is based on the space charge modulation effect introduced to the multiplication process by the input signal. Computed results show that the beat frequency output power is linearly dependent upon the signal power and self oscillating power. Also the strong dependence of the output power with respect to the diode negative resistance is found and it turns out that the larger the negative resistance, the stronger the beat frequency output power. Experimental results show a good agreement with the theoretical values. Calculated conversion gain is about -0.4[db] at 10[GHz] and the experimental value shows -6.2[db] below this value. This difference between the theoretical and the experimental values is considered to be the results of the ineffective injection of signal power.

Conventional marine radar systems utilize pulse radar which is capable of high-power transmissions and is effective for remote detection purposes. A pulse radar is most commonly used on medium or large vessels due to its expensive installation and maintenance costs. I propose the use of a Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar system operated at low-power and high-resolution instead of the conventional pulse-radar based system. The transmitted and received signals of the FMCW radar system were theoretically analyzed and radar signal processing design and simulation experiments were performed to detect the range and speed. Intermediate Frequency (IF) signal mixed with virtual transmit and receive signals were generated to perform FMCW radar signal processing simulations where the IF signal underwent noise reduction through a lowpass filter. The maximum frequency was derived through the sample interval of the FFT size instead of using A/D converter. This maximum frequency was used to get the frequency range and frequency speed which were in turn used to calculate the range and speed. The virtual beat frequency generated using MATLAB is utilized to analyze the beat frequency used in the actual FMCW radar system signal processing. The differences in the range and speed of the beat frequency signals are processed and analyzed.
The binaural beat is a subjective beating phenomenon due to the frequency difference of sounds heard in both ears, sensed by the human brain. The beating magnitude physically depends on the amplitudes of the two signals with slight different frequencies. Therefore, the binaural beat strength is expected to be affected by the difference in left and right hearing ability. In this study, 34 healthy subjects without hearing loss were chosen. They hear a pure tone sound (450 Hz) at 10 different Sound Pressure Levels (SPLs) (from 50 dB to 27.4 dB) through the one side of ears, while they hear the reference sound (440 Hz, 50 dB) through the other side of ears. Their subjective assessment using a semantic differential method reveals that the binaural beat strength decreases as SPL differences between the two sides of ears increases, if the difference is greater than 2.2 dB. The result suggests that the hearing loss difference between the two sides of ears should be less than 2.2 dB to maximize binaural beating effects.

It is necessary to estimate the Doppler spectrum for each range cell for the extraction of useful information from the return echoes in radar systems used for the remote sensing purpose such as detection of moving targets and weather surveillance. The signal amplitude in the beat frequency band is the important parameter in the detection and tracking of targets. However, strong clutter echoes do exist in most radar operation environments and the system phase noise spreads both the clutter and signal echoes of the target. In this paper, the effects of this system phase noise are analyzed concerning the clutter and the signal beat spectrum. It is shown that the separation capability of adjacent beat signal depends on the degree of spread in the clutter and beat signal caused by the radar system phase noise

We propose a correction method of nonlinear frequency sweep in an FMCW(Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) laser range finder. FMCW laser range finder requires linear frequency sweep for high resolution, and nonlinear frequency sweep makes the system performance degrade. In general, VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) which is a component used for frequency modulation in FMCW method has nonlinear property. To correct the nonlinear frequency sweep, we utilize an auxiliary delay structure for generating trigger signal of ADC(Analog to Digital Converter). Because the trigger signal has same rate of change with the beat signal, the nonlinearity of the beat signal can be corrected. the experimental results show that the proposed method effectively eliminates the nonlinear frequency sweep problem and enhances the system performance.

Design of X-band frequency FMCW based imaging radar with multi-resolutions and performances of the self-manufactured radar system are presented in this study. In order to implement the multi-bandwidths, a ramp sequence of the FMCW signal is consisting of two kinds of 'saw-tooth' waveform with different bandwidth, and a receiver circuit consisting of L-band source and frequency converter circuit is used to effectively extract spectra of beat-frequency from the received signal of X-band frequency. The system setups for performance measurement of self-manufactured radar system are maximum output power of 35 dBm, sampling frequency of 1.2 MHz and sweep time of 1 ms. Then, the measured resolutions of the modulated signal having bandwidth of 500 MHz and 300 MHz in range & azimuth-direction are (0.28 m, 0.26 m) and (0.44 m, 0.27 m), respectively.

77GHz FMCW(Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave) radar system has been used for automotive active safety systems. In typical automotive radar, the moving target detection and clutter cancellation including stationary targets are very important signal processing algorithms. This paper proposed the moving target detection algorithm which improve the detection probability and reduce the false alarm rate. First, the proposed moving target beat-frequency extraction filter is used in order to suppress clutter, and then the data association is applied by using the extracted moving target beat-frequency. Then, the zero-Doppler target is eliminated to remove the rest of clutter.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) represents beat-to-beat fluctuations of R-R intervals in Electrocardiogram (ECG). On of the clinical applications of HRV is to assess the mental-stress state by evaluating its power spectral density distribution. This study aims at finding new discriminative role of the coupled-oscillating coupling constants, Cs and Cp in the Integral Pulse Frequency Modulation (IPFM) model. Based on comparing with power spectral density of HRV in terms of the relative ratio of the low and high-frequency power component, we can conclude the fact that the coupling parameters Cs and Cp can replace the role of HRV power spectrum interpretation for judging the mental-stress state.

This paper presents design of a FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) level meter as well as simulation result of the designed system. The system is designed to measure maximum range of 20m since FMCW radar can be used for measuring short range distance. The distance is measured by analyzing the beat signal which is generated as result of mixing transmitting signal with the reflected received signal. The Fast Fourier Transform is applied to analyze the beat signal for calculating the displacement and Zoom FFT technique is used to minimize measurement error as well as increase the resolution of the measurement. The resolution of the measurement of the designed system in this paper is 2.2mm and bandwidth of 1.024GHz is used for simulation. Thus the simulation results are analyzed and compared in various conditions in order to get a comprehensive idea of frequency resolution and displacement resolution.

Digital TV tuner for 8-VSB modulation was developed with satisfying the requirements of ATSC. The double frequency conversion and the active tracking filter in the front-end were used to reduce interference of the adjacent channels and multi-channels, which suppress If beat and image band. However, it was impossible to get frequency mapping between tracking filter and first VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) in the double conversion digital TV tuner differing from conventional NTSC tuner. This paper, therefore, suggests the available structure and a new method for automatic frequency selection by obtaining the mapping of frequency characteristic over tracking voltage and the combined hardware which compose of Micro-controller, EEPROM, D/A(Digital-to-Analog Converter), OP amp and switch driver to solve above problems.
