The effects of suspension stiffness on the reaction load of the gearbox suspension for a three-point suspension wind turbine drive train were investigated by finite element analysis. The reaction forces of the gearbox suspension appear to increase as the gearbox suspension stiffness increases; however, the main bearing stiffness has a reverse effect on the reaction forces. The influence of the gearbox suspension stiffness is greater than that of the main bearing. Since the suspensions must provide the gearbox with proper support, it is not practical to use soft gearbox suspension for small reaction forces. It is more feasible to use stiff main bearings. As a guideline for the main bearing stiffness in the present study, we propose a relative stiffness of 100-150% of the reference.

This paper presents the dynamic analysis of indeterminate rotor systems with angular contact ball bearings subject to axial and radial loads. The reaction forces against applied radial loads significantly influence the dynamic characteristics of angular contact ball bearings. However, the reaction forces are hard to determine in the case of indeterminate rotor-bearing systems. To this end, this paper proposes a finite element model for indeterminate rotor systems with angular contact ball bearings. An improved bearing model is adopted which is originated from the Harris's bearing dynamic model. The bearing model is also extended to include centrifugal forces due to the ball and inner ring. This paper utilizes a new iterative algorithm for general, indeterminate rotor systems with angular contact ball bearings. This examples are provided to illustrate the dynamic characteristics of rotor systems with angular contact ball bearings subject to axial and radial loads. The experimental and numerical results prove that the proposed method is useful for the dynamic analysis of indeterminate rotor systems with angular contact ball bearings.
Wheel bearing units were almost exclusively used for car front wheel, where the two ball rows are directly side by side with integrated rubber seal. The seal is of important for wheel bearing units due to the adverse environmental conditions with mud and splash water. The seal of wheel bearing units was designed to have geometry with multi lips, which elastic lip contacts and deforms with bearing. The equation of reaction force for deformed lip as cantilever beam was previously used for seal lip design. But it's result was not useful because deflection of the beam differs from lip's. In this study, deformed shape of the lip was assumed to and order function which is more similar to lip deformation and made the equation for reaction force prediction. The Reaction forces from each other equations were compared with results by FEA to prove usefulness of new equation.
This paper presents a dynamic modeling method for the indeterminate spindle-bearing system supported by multiple bearings of different types. A spindle-bearing system supported by ball and cylindrical roller bearings is considered. The de Mul's bearing model is extended for calculating ball and cylindrical roller bearing stiffness matrices with inclusion of centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment. The dependence between spindle shaft reaction forces and bearing stiffness is effectively resolved using an iterative approach. The spindle rotor dynamics is established with the Timoshenko beam theory based finite elements. The spindle reaction forces, bearings stiffness and spindle natural frequencies are obtained with taking into account spindle radial load, ball bearing axial preload and rotational speed effects. The developed method is verified by comparing the simulation results with those from a commercial program.

Bearing damages by shaft misalignment have frequently been happened in marine ships. Specially. after stern tube bearing damage and failure for large crude oil carriers have been reported several times. However. the bearing reaction of the after stern tube bearing cannot be measured by jack-up test due to the hull structure condition. Therefore, when the jack-up test is used for the bearing reaction measurements, the bearing reaction for the after stern tube bearing obtained from the theoretical calculation method have to be used. In this paper, the shaft alignment on the large oil crude carrier is theoretically calculated and the differences between the calculated and actual installed bearing reaction values are compared. The bearing reactions for forward stern tube bearing and intermediate bearing are calculated by the simple formula using the strain gauge bending moments obtained from the measurements. Their reliability is confirmed by comparing the bearing reactions from jack-up test and the bearing reaction for after stern tube bearing is calculated by the same test. Also, the bearing reactions on the after stern tube bearing, forward stern tube bearing and intermediate shaft bearing under all operating conditions are calculated by using the bending moments obtained from the measurements and it is confirmed that the differences of the bearing reaction for all operating conditions are caused from hull deflection. The results of this study should prove useful for the future projects of the alignment calculation including the hull deflection effectiveness.
This paper presents the contact stress distributions between the multi-contact bodies and the total reaction forces for various types of contact geometry for multi-load slewing ring bearings. The FEM results indicate that the slope of the roller type of slewing ring bearing has slightly steeper than that of the ball type. This is because the roller type wire race bearings is stiffer than the ball type bearing. The total reaction force of ball type slewing bearing shows much higher than that of wire race slewing bearings.
The capacity of tubular truss chords subjected to concentrated reaction forces in the vicinity of the open end (i.e., the bearing region) is not directly treated by existing design specifications; although capacity equations are promulgated for related tubular joint configurations. The lack of direct treatment of bearing capacity in existing design specifications seems to represent an unsatisfactory situation given the fact that connections very often control the design of long-span tubular structures comprised of members with slender cross-sections. The case of the simple-span overhead highway sign truss is studied, in which the bearing reaction is applied near the chord end. The present research is aimed at assessing the validity of adapting existing specifications' capacity equations from related cases so as to be applicable in determining design capacity in tubular truss bearing regions. These modified capacity equations are subsequently used in comparisons with full-scale experimental results obtained from testing carried out at the University of Pittsburgh.
This paper presents measurement processes of rotational accuracy and comparison of theoretical values in the main bearing of scroll compressor. The main bearing is a type of oil journal bearing, but it has an axial or helical groove. The generalized coordinate system method, which can handle this groove, is applied to calculate the pressure profile in the journal bearing. The orbits of journal shaft are calculated corresponding to the compressed gas forces and bearing reaction forces. Then, the orbits are measured using three-point method. The results are compared to that from analyses.
In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of a star type epicyclic gear train have been analyzed. Nonlinear stiffness of a gear pair were obtained considering the bending and shear deformation, Hertz contact deformation, as well as tooth fillet deformation. Nonlinear stiffness coefficients and damping coefficients around the static equilibrium position were obtained by perturbation method. The loci of the planet gears and sun gear were estimated. Tooth meshing forces and bearing reaction forces were calculated. The effects of bearing clearance and oil viscosity on the gear behavior were also analyzed.
Large dynamic loads act on the rotor in rotary compressors. There are unbalance forces due to eccentric parts and gas forces induced by the pressure difference between compression and suction gases. Rotor-journal bearing system is nonlinear since the stiffness and damping coefficients of the lubricating oil film are not constant in the bearings. The system is considered as a coupled problem of flexible rotor and the journal bearings. Bearing reaction force is calculated from pressure of oil film using Reynolds equations in journal bearings. Pressure distribution in journal bearing is analyzed by finite difference method. The dynamic response of rotor and bearing characteristic are discussed when rotary compressor has a relative misalignment.
