  • Many commercial high speed and lightly loaded rotating machineries incorporate floating ring bearings (FRBs) owing to their low cost and reduced power losses. Many researchers have developed various analytical models to predict the performance and the stability of those rotor-bearing systems with FRBs. However, most of the models failed to predict stability of the rotor-bearing systems with FRBs. FRBs comprise two fluid films in series and the ratio of floating ring speed to journal speed reflects the equilibrium state of the two fluid films. Therefore the speed ratio is one of the main concerns in the analysis of FRBs. This paper provides the experimental results of the speed ratio which enables one to verify of the analysis model for FRBs.

  • In this study, we considered the bearing capacity of strip footing over clay layers partially replaced by sand. The FEM analysis is performed to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity. Partial replacement is defined by multiples of footing width(B) and inclination of sides. The cases(B'=inf.) of sand layers equal to clay layers are preferentially conducted. The baring capacity of B'=inf. is comparative value for bearing capacity of partial replacement layers. ${\beta}$ is the ratio of ultimate bearing capacity of B'=inf and partial ultimate bearing capacity replacement. ${\beta}$ is used to analyze the characteristic of bearing capacity of clay layers partially replaced by sand. Each of the three undrained shear strengths of clay and friction angles of sand is considered. The result of this analysis shows that ${\beta}$ depends on sand depth.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of bearing capacity of shallow foundation on the grounds. We made a comparative study of existing bearing capacity theory, based on the three-dimensional finite element analysis with a variety of conditions such as ground condition, foundation scale and foundation shape. In the finite element analysis, the ultimate bearing capacity showed a gradual convergence in the form of exponential function or logarithm function according to the foundation scale. Although the shear strength increased, the bearing capacity tended not to increase but change linearly. In the results of comparative study of existing bearing capacity theory, bearing capacity ratio ($q_{u(FEA)}/q_{u(theory)}$) of pure sand has the outcome closest to those of the Terzaghi method. Pure clay turned out to be about 0.4~0.6 while normal soil was changed in a range of 0.3~1.3. As shear strength is increased, the results turned out to be less than 1.0. Bearing capacity ratio ($q_u/q_{u(1.0)}$), normalized at 1.0m bearing capacity, was about 35%, 15% and 5% of theoretical formula under the condition of ${\phi}=25^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $35^{\circ}$ of pure sand; no scale effect was found with pure clay and the normal soil with lower soil strength level showed less than 10% of the theoretical formula of pure sand. Bearing capacity ratio of each case, in accordance with, the shear strength increase, was largely influenced by the internal friction angle. Shape factor of bearing capacity ratios classified by foundation shapes have different results according to the shapes; the shape factor of circular foundation is 1.50, square foundation is 1.30, rectangular and continuous foundations are 1.1~1.0.

  • Rapid increase of Refrigeration and Air conditioning system in modem industries brings attention to the urgency of core technology development in the area. This paper presents theoretical investigation of the lubrication characteristics of rotary compressor for refrigeration and air conditioning. In order to analyze the lubrication characteristics of the main & sub bearing of rotary compressor, the bearing force and locus of shaft center are analyzed by the dynamic analysis of rotary compressor and numerical analysis of Reynolds equation as the operating condition is changed in various ways. In this paper, we used the Runge-Kutta method for the dynamic analysis of rotary compressor and the SOR (Successive OverRelaxation) method for the numerical analysis of Reynolds equation. The result shows that the operating condition of sub bearing is severer than that of main bearing, and eccentricity ratio grows as the bearing force increases. It is believed that the result can be applied to the design of alternative refrigerant rotary compressor.

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was of scale using auditory biofeedback training and kinging training on walking speed and weight bearing ratio in patients hemiplegia with stroke to determine of the effects of such training would be maintained even after stopping the intervention. METHODS: The 30 subject were classified into three groups : 12 times, 3 times a week receiving the control, the experimental group scale using auditory and kicking training for 4 weeks. In addition, all subjects in the control group and experimental groups received the same general exercise treatment 12 times, 3 times a week for 4 weeks, and underwent follow-up tests. The significance of differences between the control group and the experimental groups was analysis by repeated-ANOVA, Interaction time and groups was analysis by repeated-ANOVA. In case where there were differences, post-hot tests were conducted using repeated measure ANOVA. RESULTS: There were significant differences in 10 m walking speed and weight bearing ratio between the control group and experimental group after the performance of the scale using auditory training and kicking training. Scale using auditory biofeedback training 4 weeks was more effective than kicking training. After 8 weeks weight bearing ratio maintained on scale using auditory training. CONCLUSION: These finding suggest that the scale using auditory biofeedback training and kicking training has positive effects on hemiplegia with stroke.

  • An oil lubricated Herringbone aroove jounal bearing(HGJB) with eight-circular-profile grooves on the non-rotating bearing surface is analyzed numerically and experimentally. The load carrying capacity, attitude angle, stiffness and damping coefficients are obtained numerically for the various bearing configurations. The onset speed of instability is also examined for the various eccentricity ratios. The configuration parameters of HGJB, such as groove depth ratio, groove width ratio, and groove angle, are dependent on each other because the grooves are generated by using eight small balls rolling over the inner surface of the sleeve with press fit. Therefore, it is not allowed to suggest a set of optimal design parameters such as the one for the rectangular profile HGJB. The overall results from numerical and experimental analysis prove that the circular profile HGJB has an excellent stability characteristics and the higher load carrying capacity than the plain journal bearing.

  • In this study, a series of experiments and analyses are performed to estimate the static characteristics of hydrostatic journal bearing such as load capacity, pressure change in each recess, eccentricity of spindle, etc. The experiments are carried out for a multi-recess type journal bearing with capillary restrictor. The Finite Element Method(FEM) is used for the analyses. The predicted load capacity under the condition of stationary or eccentric ratio of bellow 0.2 of the spindle shows excellent agreement with the measured. But, with an increase of the eccentric ratio when the spindle is rotating, the predicted load capacity is largely estimated than the measured. It seems that the difference is mainly caused among others from the fact that the effect of oil-viscosity variation due to the temperature change in the bearing is not introduced into the analyses. The analysis method proposed to estimate the static characteristics of hydrostatic journal bearing is considered to be very reliable since the predicted results are overall in good agreement with the measured.

  • In this paper, the bearing capacity of a non-eccentric and eccentric tubular, concrete-filled, steel bridge pier was studied through the finite element method. Firstly, to verify the validity of the numerical analysis, the finite element analysis of four steel tube columns with concrete in-fill was carried out under eccentric loading and horizontal cyclic loading. The analytical results were compared with experimental data. Secondly, the effects of the eccentricity of the vertical loading on the seismic performance of these eccentrically loaded steel tubular bridge piers were considered. According to the simulated results, with increasing eccentricity ratio, the bearing capacity on the eccentric side of a steel tubular bridge pier (with concrete in-fill) is greatly reduced, while the capacity on the opposite side is improved. Moreover, an empirical formula was proposed to describe the bearing capacity of such bridge piers under non-eccentric and eccentric load. This will provide theoretical evidence for the seismic design of the eccentrically loaded steel tubular bridge piers with concrete in-fill.
