  • The strength ratio of the main structures of buildings gradually increasing, due to the advances made in analysis and cost saving techniques. In this study, to examine the stability of industry buildings using sandwich panels as roof assemblies, we examine the changes in the moment strength ratio of the main structures caused by increasing the roof load. This study adopts the PEB structure and three H-steel structure as the structural analysis models. In the case where the additional load exceeds about 11% of the roof design load, the strength ratio exceeds 1 for the main structure. In the case where the additional load exceeds about 36%(of the roof design load), the working moment exceeds the plastic moments, which leads to major damage to the structure. This study compares 1) the maximum load according to the purlin spaces, 2) the maximum load by KS, and 3) the maximum load calculated from the test results of the manufacturer. The maximum bearing load of the panels determined by all three methods exceeds the structure failure threshold load of the main structure. This study provides evidence that an unexpected increase in the roof load might cause the whole structure to collapse, due to the failure of the main structural members, before the failure of the roof assemblies. Therefore, information on the structural performance of the sandwich panels is required for the structural design, and the sandwich panels should be considered to be an integral part of the overall structural design.

  • Avulsion fractures of the intercondylar eminence of the tibia are not uncommon. In the displaced avulsion fracture, anatomical reduction and firm fixation of fracture fragments are needed but the most of the conventional operative techniques including arthroscopic technique are relatively complex and need. The results were not always satisfactory due to the risk of postoperative complications such as wound infection, premature epiphyseal closure and loss of fixation after early motion etc. So we describe a simple and safe modified method of arthroscopic reduction and fixation for avulsion fractures of the intercondylar eminence of the tibia. In our thirteen cases, we achieved anatomical reduction and secure fixation using cannulated screw through the three arthroscopic portals (anterolateral, medial mid-patellar and central). Postoperatively, immediate limited range of motion of the knee and partial weight bearing were possible. Additional use of the washer afforded safe fixation of comminuted avulsion fracture. The advantage of this technique includes its technical simplicity, easy removal of hardware, ability to treat comminuted type IV fracture with washer, no additional skin incision, no damage to growing plate in growth children and less morbidity.

  • Background: The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of resistance exercise on static and dynamic proprioception by applying elastic bands to the knee flexor, which can be performed earlier than proprioception, a weight bearing pattern. Proprioceptive training may be applied to the early period of recuperation training along with resistance exercise to prevent damage to the knees and the joints in the lower body, as well as the reoccurrence of injury, which is expected to improve the effect of static and dynamic proprioceptive training. Methods: The subjects of this study were 32 men and women in their 20s who volunteered to participate in the experiment which was carried out over the course of 6 weeks from March 14 to April 24 at K Hospital located in Yongin City. They were tested in two groups: the elastic band resistance exercise group (RE: Resistance Excercise Group, n=17) and the joint motion range exercise group(ROM: Range of Motion Group, n=15). In this experiment, static and dynamic proprioceptive tests were given to both groups before and after the test. In this study, SPSS Win ver.12.0 was utilized to perform a T-test on the independent samples in order to validate the identical features of subjects in the RE and ROM Group and substantiate the significance as to the difference between both groups before and after the test. Also, a paired T-test was conducted to compare the static and dynamic proprioception of both groups before and after the test. The statistical significance levels were ${\alpha}$=.05. Results: 1.The static proprioception in both groups, RE and ROM, increased in a statistically significant way after the test(p<.05). 2.The static propriocetion of the RE group increased in a statistically significant way after the test(p<.05). However, the increase of the static proprioception in the ROM group was not statistically significant. 3.Static and dynamic proprioception of the RE group increased significantly more than that of the ROM group after the test(p<.05). Conclusion: The resistance exercise using elastic bands improved the static and dynamic proprioception more than the joint motion range exercise did, reducing the risk of injury by enhancing the location sense of the joints and the sense of motion and shortening the period of recovery from injury. The outcome of the experiment may provide basic data for developing an effective way to reduce the risk of injury among ordinary people and athletes.

  • Purpose: This study is to evaluate the clinical results of pull-out suture for root tear of posterior horn of medial meniscus. Materials and Methods: Between March 2006 and February 2011, We studied 40 cases with the root tear of posterior horn of medial meniscus which follow up more than 1 years. Mean age was 49.5 years old. We excluded osteoarthritis or varus deformity patients more than 5 degrees. pull-out suture was performed to the patients with grade 0-2 of Kellgren and Lawrence classification. According to Outerbridge classification, evaluation of cartilage damage was performed during arthroscopy. Evaluation of clinical result was used the Lysholm score. Results: The mean pre-operation Lysholm score was 63.9 and post-operation score was 86.3. The complete failure rate was 3 of 40 cases (7.5%). Twenty of 40 cases (50%) showed cartilage lesions in weight bearing portion of medial femoral condyle which were 12 cases in grade 1, 5 cases in grade 2 and 3 cases in grade 3 according to the Outerbridge classification. Conclusion: In the treatment of pull-out suture for root tear of posterior horn of medial meniscus, exclusion of more than moderate arthritis or varus deformity is very importment. Pull-out suture seems to be a useful treatment of the root tear of posterior horn of medial meniscus in mild osteoarthritis or varus deformity of middle ages.

  • Recombinant plasmid, pBKH4, containing NPT II and P35S-BcHSP17.6 was constructed by ligation of Bum H I -digested pBKSl-l and BcHSP 17.6 (thermotolerance gene) 6om pBLH4. The tobacco leaf disc was cocultivated with transformed Agmbacterium tumefaciens bearing pBKH4 for 24 hours and transformed shoots were selected on MS-n/B medium containing $100\;{\mu\textrm{g}}/ml$ of kanamycin. Heat-killing temperature of Nicotima tabacum was $50^{\circ}$ for >15min, and transformed tobacco plants with BcHSP17.6 cDNA exhibited thermotolerance at the heat-killing temperature. The transgenic plants were analyzed by Southern blot hybridization with the probe of ${\alpha}^{_32}P$ labelled BcHSP17.6 cDNA. Transcription and expression level of BcHSP17.6 cDNA were also continued by Northern blot analysis and Ouchterlony double immunodiffusion assay. In this study, we suggest that the BcHSP17.6 cDNA introduced to tobacco plant is related to thenuoto-lerance and 17.6-kD LMW HSP acts as a protector from heat damage in plants.

  • This experiment was carried out to find out the effects of heat conservation materials (burying in soil, lagging, lagging +straw, nonwoven fabric, nonwoven fabric+straw) on freezing damage, labor saving, and crown gall occurrence of 'Kyoho' grapes. Temperature differences in burying in soil and lagging with $2.8^{\circ}C$ and $6.4^{\circ}C$, respectively and were considered favorable for over-wintering of grapevines. Heat conservation index in lagging +straw and burying in soil calculated from degree-hours below $-10^{\circ}C$ was 5 to 7 times higher than that of open field. Budbreak started earlier in lagging with+straw and nonwoven fabric+straw covering, and percent budbreak was increased by 22% and 7%, respectively, as well as higher than burying in soil. Diameter of bearing mother branch and length of internode and daughter branch were gross or long with soil and lagging straw and nonwoven fabric+straw. Cane growth was enhanced by burying in soil and lagging with+straw treatment. Crown gall occured higher in soil covered grape vines Labor saving was obtained in lagging with as much as 44% compared to burying in soil.

  • Purpose: Benign bone tumor of the talar body have rarely been evaluated according to the therapeutic methods because of the scarcity of their incidence. Here, we report our experience of 8 cases who were treated by using of posterior approach and curettage through the posterior process of the talus. Materials and Methods: Between February 1986 and October 2001, we experienced 8 cases of benign bone tumor occurring in the talar body. They included two osteoid osteomas, two giant cell tumors, one capillary hemangioma, one chondroblastoma, one simple bone cyst, and one osteochondroma. Their mean age was 22.1 years (ranging from 10 to 41 years). Mean follow-up period was 7.7 years (ranging from 1 to 16 years). All patients were treated by using of posterior approach. Two osteoid osteomas and one osteochondroma were treated by excision of tumors. Other cases were treated with curettage through the cortical window on the posterior process of the talus. Results: There was no recurrence during the follow-up period. one infection occurred. Except this case, all patients had no pain in weight-bearing, and complete range of movement at the ankle joint was reserved in each case. Conclusion: In this study, we suppose that posterior approach to the talar body may be a safe method with minimal damage of normal tissues and sufficient of curettage is capable through the cortical window on the posterior process of the talus.

  • The result of the study on the origin and preservation status of the 'Gongju Junghakdong old missionary house', the Registered Cultural Property No. 233, reveals that the building was approved on October 23, 1921, and missionary Alice H. Sharp was living in the building until her retirement from her missionary life of 39 years in Korea in 1939. In order to review internal and external preservation status of the building, condition of wood material, the composition of the window, the damage of the wall, and the leaning of the building were examined. In particular, in the case of window facilities, it is necessary to restore it to the original upper and lower sliding window. As a result of investigation of the preservation status of the external facilities, it is necessary to restore the original shape of the staircase and a deck of the building on south western side and the well. In addition, the results of the non-destructive diagnosis of the ground revealed that the building was built on uneven surface layer of 2-5 m thickness and the boundary between the surface layer and the upper part of the weathered rock is inclined following geomorphology. This phenomenon shows that when the water content of the ground increases in the rainy season, the bearing capacity of the ground is lowered, and there is a possibility of uneven subsidence. Especially, landslides may occur in case of heavy rain. Therefore, it is desirable to install a masonry facility at the southwest boundary of the site, and it is recommended to install a drainage facility to ensure rapid drainage.

  • Other damage can occur due to the preexisting dull structure and installation of nonenvironmental-friendly concrete structure, lack of function for preventing coastal erosion. Increase of personal income and fast spread of the concept of waterfront casued the initiation of many project to improve aging coastal ports. However, none of environment-friendly structure has been developed and pre-existing solid block, igloo block, tunnel block are used commonly. In piers and lighter's wharf where the ships are mooring, resonance by the generation of a reflected wave caused by penetration wave in the port and port wave increases wave heights in the port and makes difficult to maintain the temperature, causes problems in mooring ships and cargo-working, and eventually increase the occurance of damages of the small ships by the collision. Therefore, development of new types of blcok is necessary. To apply Coastal Environments block developed for this reason, it requires allowable bearing capacity evaluation of shear key. For this study, we made test specimen for connecting part of C.E. Block, and conducted friction test of boundary surface. Data obtained by the experiment was analyzed by finite element analysis and assessed the coefficient of friction between C.E. Block and boundary surface.

  • The Shilla Stone Monument in Jungseongri was found during the road-construction in Pohang. It has approximately two hundreds of letters inscribed on the surface of one side, and it is estimated to be older than Shilla Stone Monument in Naengsuri which had been known for the oldest stele in Shilla Period. This monument is made of fine to medium-grained biotite granite, while the Shilla Stone Monument in Naengsuri is made of fine-grained granodioritic porphyry bearing feldspar and amphibole phenocrysts. Both rock types of the monuments are interpreted to be cognate with biotite granite in Shinkwangmyeon, and with granodioritic porphyry in Gigyemyeon. They are characterized by xenolith and miarolitic cavity. Damage aspects in both monuments are discoloring, cracking and breaking. These damages do not cause structural instability of the monuments, but attenuate aesthetic value. Black and brown discoloring contaminants on the surface of the Jungseongri Monument contain a high amount of manganese and iron. As a result of ultrasonic test, both monuments were evaluated to be medium-weathered (MW), although the velocity of the Shilla Monument in Jungseongri was slightly lower than the Shilla Monument in Naengsuri. This is because the Monument in Juengseongri had been exposed to outdoor environment for long time until the discovery. It is necessary for Shilla Monuments to be protected by appropriately environmental control and management.
