The existing CFT columns present the deterioration in confining effect after the yield of steel tube, local buckling and the deterioration in load capacity. If lateral load such as earthquake load is applied to CFT columns, strong shearing force and moment are generated at the lower part of the columns and local buckling appears at the column. In this study, axial compression test and beam-column test were conducted for existing CFT square column specimens and those reinforced with carbon fiber sheets (CFS). The variables for axial compression test were width-thickness ratio and the number of CFS layers and those for beamcolumn test were concrete strength and the number of CFS layers. The results of the compression test showed that local buckling was delayed and maximum load capacity improved slightly as the number of layers increased. The specimens' ductility capacity improved due to the additional confinement by carbon fiber sheets which delayed local buckling. In the beam-column test, maximum load capacity improved slightly as the number of CFS layers increased. However, ductility capacity improved greatly as the increased number of CFS layers delayed the local buckling at the lower part of the columns. It was observed that the CFT structure reinforced with carbon fiber sheets controlled the local buckling at columns and thus improved seismic performance. Consequently, it was deduced that the confinement of CFT columns by carbon fiber sheets suggested in this study would be widely used for reinforcing CFT columns.
Square hollow section columns and H-section beams have recently been increasing1y used. Rigid column-beam connections cannot be made for the structural system and thus some measures to improve the rotational stiffness of connections should be developed. For this purpose, several types of connections. such as H-section beams connected to concrete-filled square hollow section columns, have been contrived and put to experiment. Since the experimental works are usually difficult and expensive. Particularly test of all the types of connections with similar behavior may not be feasible. Instead, the numerical analysis will be adopted predict the flexural stiffness of connections. In this work, FEM modeling techniques are examined and parametric analysis study has been carried out. The major parameters considered are concrete strength, thickness of steel column, magnitude and eccentricity of axial forces.
A 4-story reinforced concrete structure built above an underground parking garage shows some slab deflections, and the deflections of the concrete floor slabs are proposed to be alleviated by the application of light-weight topping material in conjunction with localized strengthening of the slabs. The application of light-weight concrete topping on the existing slab has been simulated and its performance to anticipated loads has been analyzed. The application of light-weight topping material imposes additional weight on the exiting floor slabs. This added weight on the existing slabs causes over-stressing of the slabs. This over-stressing can be alleviated by enhancing the load carrying capacity of the existing slabs. Additional load carrying capacity in the existing slabs can be developed by localized strengthening of the slabs utilizing techniques such as the application of fiber-reinforced composites on the bottom surface of the slabs, and application of fiber-reinforced composites adequately complements the capacity of the existing slabs to bear the additional load imposed by light-weight leveling material. Additional moments in the beam and columns induced by the application of the light-weight topping material were tabulated and compared with capacity. The moment D/C ratios of the beam and columns are well the range of acceptable limits, and the beam and columns are not overstressed by the application of the surcharge.
This paper presents the flexural behaviour of stainless steel beam-to-tubular column joints with extended endplates subjected to static loading. Moment-rotation relationships were investigated numerically by using Abaqus software with geometric and material nonlinearity considered. The prediction of damages among components was achieved through ductile damage models, and the influence of initial geometric imperfections and residual stresses was evaluated in large fabricated stainless steel joints involving hollow columns and concrete-filled columns. Parametric analysis was subsequently conducted to assess critical factors that could affect the flexural performance significantly in terms of the initial stiffness and moment resistance. A comparison between codes of practice and numerical results was thereafter made, and design recommendations were proposed for further applications. Results suggest that the finite element model can predict the structural behaviour reasonably well with the component damage consistent with test outcomes. Initial geometric imperfections and residual stresses are shown to have little effect on the moment-rotation responses. A series of parameters that can influence the joint behaviour remarkably include the strain-hardening exponents, stainless steel strength, diameter of bolts, thickness of endplates, position of bolts, section of beams and columns. AS/NZS 2327 is more reliable to predict the joint performance regarding the initial stiffness and moment capacity compared to EN 1993-1-8.
Many authors have established the usefulness of concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) sections as compression members while few have proved their utility as flexural members. To explore their prospective as part of CFST frame structures, two types of connections using extended end plate and seat angle are proposed for exterior joints of CFST beams and CFST columns. To investigate the performance and failure modes of the proposed bolted connections subjected to static loads, an experimental program has been executed involving ten specimens of exterior beam-to-column joints subjected to monotonically increasing load applied at the tip of beam, the performance is appraised in terms of load deformation behaviour of joints. The test parameters varied are the beam section type, type and diameter of bolts. To validate the experimental behaviour of the proposed connections in CFST beam-column joints, finite element analysis for the applied load has been performed using software ATENA-3D and the results of the proposed models are compared with experimental results. The experimental results obtained agree that the proposed CFST beam-column connections perform in a semi-rigid and partial strength mode as per specification of EC3.
The objective of this paper is to develop a simplified method that could predict the strength of concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns applicable to high strength material under combined axial compression and flexure. The simplified method for determining the strength of CFT columns is based on the interaction curve of the section approached by a polygonal connection of the points. These points are determined by using symmetrical properties of the CFT section. For each point, a simple equation is proposed to determine the strength of the slender columns under compression and flexure. The simple equation was adjusted with results of elasto-plastic analysis results. Validation of the simplified method is undertaken by comparison with data from the test conducted at Kyushu University. These results confirm the fact that the simplified method could accurately and reliably predict the strength of CFT columns under combined axial compression and flexure.

In this paper, sixteen column specimens were tested under the concentrated and excentric load condition to examine the structural behavior of strengthened columns. 16 column specimens were divided into four groups. One group is not strengthened, the other three groups are strengthened by the materials : 1) steel plate, 2) carbon fiber sheet, and 3) glass fiber sheet, each group is composed of four specimens. As a result, strengthened columns have larger bearing capacity and energy absorption after ultimate load than unstrengthened columns. The column group strengthened with steel plate has the best bearing capacity among the strengthened column groups. Also, the columns strengthened with the carbon fiber sheet are similar to glass fiber sheet in bearing capacity. If necessary to strengthen columns in trouble, car should be taken to treat the joint between beam and column because of crack propagation in tension side.
The use of box columns has been increased due to the rigidity in rigid orthogonal moment resisting frames. On the other hand, the installation and welding of necessary horizontal continuity plates inside the columns are both labor-consuming and costly tasks. Accordingly, in this paper, a new beam-to-box column connection by trapezoidal external stiffeners and horizontal bar mats is presented to provide seismic parameters. The proposed connection consists of eight external stiffeners in the level of beam flanges and five horizontal bar mats in Concrete Filled Tube (CFT) columns. The new connection effectively alleviates the stress concentration and moves the plastic hinge away from the column face by horizontal external stiffeners. In addition, the result shows that proposed connection has provided the required strength and rigidity of connection, so that the increased strength, 8.08% and rigidity, 3.01% are compared to connection with internal continuity plates, also the results indicate that this connection can offer appropriate ductility and energy dissipation capacity for its potential application in moment resisting frames in seismic region. As a result, the proposed connection can be a good alternative for connection with continuity plates.
Interaction of lateral loading, combined with axial force needs to be determined with care in reinforced concrete (RC) one-dimensional structural members (1D SMs) such as beam-columns (BCs) and columns. RC 1D SMs under heavy axial loading are known to fail by brittle mode and small lateral displacements. In this paper, a macro element-based algorithm is proposed to analyze the RC 1D SMs under monotonic or cyclic combined loading. The 1D SMs are discretized into macro-elements (MEs) located between the critical sections and the inflection points. The critical sections are discretized into fixed rectangular finite elements (FRFE). The nonlinear behavior of confined and unconfined concretes and steel elements are considered in the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm has been validated by the results of experimental tests carried out on full-scale RC structural members. The evolution of ultimate strain at extreme compression fiber of a rectangular RC section for different orientations of lateral loading shows that the ultimate strain decreases with increasing the axial force. In the examined cases, this ultimate strain ranges from 0.0024 to 0.0038. Therefore, the 0.003 value given by ACI-318 code for ultimate strain, is not conservative and valid for the combined load cases with significant values of axial force (i.e. for the axial forces heavier than 70% of the ultimate axial force).

This paper deals with the geometrical nonlinear analyses of post-buckled columns with variable cross-section. The objective columns having variable cross-section of the width, depth and square tapers are supported by both hinged ends. By using the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory, differential equations governing the elastica of post-buckled column and their boundary conditions are derived. The solution methods of these differential equations which have two unknown parameters are developed. As the numerical results, equilibrium paths, elasticas and stress resultants of the post-buckled columns are presented. Laboratory scaled experiments were conducted for validating the theories developed in this study.
