In this paper, a complete solution is presented for dynamic plastic response of a rigid, perfectly plastic hinged-free beam, of which one end is simply supported or hinged and the other end free, subjected to a transverse strike by a travelling mass at an arbitrary location along its span. The governing differential equations are expressed in non-dimensional forms and solved numerically to obtain the instantaneous deflection of the beam and the plastic dissipated energy in the beam. The dynamic behavior for a hinged-free beam is more complicated than that of a free-free beam. It transpires that the mass ratio and impact position have significant influence on the final deformation. In the aspect of energy dissipation, unlike simply supported or clamped beams for which the plastic deformation consumes almost the total input energy, a considerable portion of the input energy would be transferred as rigid-body motion of hinged-free beam, and the energy dissipated in its plastic deformation is greatly reduced.
This paper deals with free vibrations of the tapered Timoshenko beam with constant volume, in which both the rotatory inertia and shear deformation are included. The cross section of the tapered beam is chosen as the regular polygon cross section whose depth is varied with the parabolic function. The ordinary differential equations governing free vibrations of such beam are derived based on the Timoshenko beam theory by decomposing the displacements. Governing equations are solved for determining the natural frequencies corresponding with their mode shapes. In the numerical examples, three end constraints of the hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped ends are considered. The effects of various beam parameters on natural frequencies are extensively discussed. The mode shapes of both the deflections and stress resultants are presented, in which the composing rates due to bending rotation and shear deformation are determined.
Two prestressed steel reinforced high performance concrete (SRC) beams, a nonprestressed SRC beam and a counterpart prestressed concrete beam were tested under low reversed cyclic loading to evaluate seismic performance of prestressed SRC beams. The failure modes, deformation restoring capacity, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the prestressed SRC beams were discussed. Results showed that due to the effect of plastic deformations of steel beams encased in concrete, the three SRC beams exhibited residual deformation ratios ranging between 0.64 and 0.79, which were apparently higher than that of the prestressed concrete beam (0.33). The ductility coefficients of the prestressed SRC beams and the prestressed concrete beam ranged between 4.65 and 4.87, obviously lower than that of nonprestressed SRC beam (9.09), which indicated the steel beams influenced the ductility little while prestressing resulted in an apparent reduction in ductility. The amount of energy dissipated by the prestressed SRC beams was less than that dissipated by the nonprestressed SRC beam but much more than that dissipated by the prestressed concrete beam.
In heavy industrial fields such as power plant and chemical plant, it is often necessary to restore damaged part of large machinery and structure which is installed in the hazard working place. In this paper, to estimate stress distribution which occurs during damage and restoration of cylindrical beam structure, the finite element technique has been used. A finite element model was verified by experiment for non deformed cylindrical beam structure. The displacements and elastic recovery have an excellent agreement between experiment and finite element analysis. The variations of stress distribution on deformation and restoration procedure for surfaces have been examined. The maximum von Mises stress appears in the surface for deformation and restoration procedure. In deformation procedure, the maximum stress occurs in the vicinity of support body. In restoration procedure, the maximum stress occurs in the vicinity of the fixing body. The fixing body allows avoiding stress concentration in adjacent support structure boundary.
The seismic behaviors of steel moment connections are investigated based on the numerical analysis of the connections with US and Japanese typical details. The rupture index, representing the fracture potential, is used to evaluate the ductility of the connections at the critical location. The results show that the presence of a slab increases the beam strength, imposes constraint near the beam top flange, and consequently, induces concentrated deformation near the beam access hall, which reduces the ductility of the connection. The total deformation capacity of the connection depends not only on a beam but also on a column and panel zone.
In this paper, free vibration characteristics of functionally graded (FG) nanobeams embedded on elastic medium are investigated based on third order shear deformation (Reddy) beam theory by presenting a Navier type solution for the first time. The material properties of FG nanobeam are assumed to vary gradually along the thickness and are estimated through the power-law and Mori-Tanaka models. A two parameters elastic foundation including the linear Winkler springs along with the Pasternak shear layer is in contact with beam. The small scale effect is taken into consideration based on nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen. The nonlocal equations of motion are derived based on third order shear deformation beam theory through Hamilton's principle and they are solved applying analytical solution. According to the numerical results, it is revealed that the proposed modeling can provide accurate frequency results of the FG nanobeams as compared to some cases in the literature. The obtained results are presented for the vibration analysis of the FG nanobeams such as the influences of foundation parameters, gradient index, nonlocal parameter and slenderness ratio in detail.
Comprehensive and accurate analysis of a finite foundation beam is a challenging engineering problem and an important subject in foundation design. One of the limitation of the traditional Winkler elastic foundation model is that the model neglects the effect of the interface resistance between the beam and the underneath foundation soil. By taking the beam-soil interface resistance into account, a deformation governing differential equation for a finite beam resting on the Winkler elastic foundation is developed. The coupling effect between vertical and horizontal displacements is also considered in the presented method. Using Galerkin method, semi-analytical solutions for vertical and horizontal displacements, axial force, shear force and bending moment of the beam under symmetric loads are presented. The influences of the interface resistance on the behavior of foundation beam are also investigated.

This work presents an analytical approach to investigate wave propagation in bi-directional functionally graded cantilever porous beam. The formulations are based on Touratier's higher-order shear deformation beam theory. The physical properties of the porous functionally graded material beam are graded through the width and thickness using a power law distribution. Two porosities models approximating the even and uneven porosity distributions are considered. The governing equations of the wave propagation in the porous functionally graded beam are derived by employing the Hamilton's principle. Closed-form solutions for various parameters and porosity types are obtained, and the numerical results are compared with those available in the literature. The numerical results show the power law index, number of wave, geometrical parameters and porosity distribution models affect the dynamic of the FG beam significantly.

In this paper, a quasi-3D hyperbolic shear deformation theory for the bending responses of a functionally graded (FG) porous micro-beam is based on a modified couple stress theory requiring only one material length scale parameter that can capture the size influence. The model proposed accounts for both shear and normal deformation effects through an illustrative variation of all displacements across the thickness and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the micro-beam. The effective material properties of the functionally graded micro-beam are assumed to vary in the thickness direction and are estimated using the homogenization method of power law distribution, which is modified to approximate the porous material properties with even and uneven distributions of porosity phases. The equilibrium equations are obtained using the virtual work principle and solved using Navier's technique. The validity of the derived formulation is established by comparing it with the ones available in the literature. Numerical examples are presented to investigate the influences of the power law index, material length scale parameter, beam thickness, and shear and normal deformation effects on the mechanical characteristics of the FG micro-beam. The results demonstrate that the inclusion of the size effects increases the microbeams stiffness, which consequently leads to a reduction in deflections. In contrast, the shear and normal deformation effects are just the opposite.
