  • The information on local stress acting in a bridge is required in many occasions such as fatigue assessment. The analysis by beam elements cannot yield this class of information adequately, while the finite element modeling of an entire long-span bridge by shell elements is impractical. In the present study, the hybrid modeling is tried out: only part of a bridge in which the point of interest is located is discretized by shell elements and the remaining part is modeled by beam elements. By solving a simple box girder problem, the effectiveness of this approach is discussed. This technique is then applied to the Rama IX Bridge for local stress evaluation. The numerical results compare very well with the results of a full-scale static loading test. The present research thus offers a practical yet accurate technique for the stress analysis of a long-span cable-stayed bridge.

  • Finite element analysis is performed for transient thermal deformation of a shadow mask inside the Braun tube and the landing shift or mislanding of the electronic beam is calclated. The shadow mask has numerous slits through which the electronic beams are guided to land on the designed phosphor. Its thermal deformations therefore cause the mislanding of the electronic beam and result in decolorization of a screen. For realistic finite element analysis, firstly the effective thermal conductivity and the effective elastric modulus are calculated, and the shadow mask is modeled as shell without slits. Next the nonlinear finite element formulation is developed for transient heat transfer on the shadow mask, wherein thermal radiation is a major heat transfer mechanism. Analysis of the resulting thermoelastic deformations is followed, from which the mislanding of the electronic beam is obtained. The present finite element scheme may be efficiently used for thermal deformation design of a shadow mask.

  • The response analysis of frame structure with open section beams considering warping conditions and short duration load have been performed. When a beam of frame structure is subjected under torsional moment, the cross section will deform a warping as well as twist. For some thin-walled sections warping will be large, and accompanying warping restraint will induce axial and shear stresses and reduce the twist of beam which stiffens the beam in torsion. Because of impact or blast loads, the wave propagation effects become increasingly important as load duration decreases. This paper presents that a warping restraint in finite element model effects the behavior of beam deformation, dynamic mode shape and response analysis. The computer modelling of frame is discussed in linear beam element model and linear thin shell element model, also presents a correlation between computer predicted and actual experimental results for static deflection, natural frequencies and mode shapes of frame. A method to estimate the number of normal modes that are important is discussed.

  • The finite element modeling is used to study the buckling and postbuckling behavior of composite laminates with an embedded delamination. Degenerated shell element and rigid beam element are utilized for the finite element modeling. In the nonlinear finite element formulation, the updated Lagrangian description method based on the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor and the Green strain tensor is used. The buckling and postbuckling behavior of composite laminates with a delamination are investigated for various delamination sizes, stacking sequences, and boundary conditions. It is shown that the buckling load and postbuckling behavior of composite laminates depend on the buckling model which is determined by the delamination size, stacking sequence and boundary condition. Also, results show that introduction of couplings can reduce greatly the buckling load.

  • This paper presents a finite element procedure based on Bridging multi-scale method (BMM) in order to incorporate the effect of local/cross-sectional deformations (e.g., flange local buckling and web crippling) on the global behaviour of thin-walled members made of fibre-reinforced polymer composite laminates. This method allows the application of local shell elements in critical regions of an existing beam-type model. Therefore, it obviates the need for using computationally expensive shell elements in the whole domain of the structure, which is otherwise necessary to capture the effect of the localized behaviour. Consequently, highly accurate analysis results can be achieved with this method by using significantly smaller finite element model, compared to the existing methods. The proposed method can be used for composite polymer laminates with arbitrary fibre orientation directions in different layers of the material, and under various loading conditions. Comparison with full shell-type finite element analysis results are made in order to illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed technique.

  • Muller-Scordelis RC Gabled Hyperbolic Paraboloid (HP) shell is divided by 40 40 mesh and analyzed using a finite element computer program which was developed by Mahamoud and Gupta and migrated to a Cray Y-U 00 at SERI. The results are compared with membrane theory and Muller-Scordelis's results. Comparing with Muller-Scordelis's result it shows that good agreements between two analyses, except a discrepancy in the normal deflections of the crown beam. The behavior of the crown beam is quite sensitive and needs further study. The analysis shows that Gabled HP shells do not behave as the typical shells according to the membrane theory. To design such Gabled HP shells we rather use a finite element analysis which simulates realistically membrane and honing actions of the shells.

  • This paper proposes a one-dimensional fiber beam element model taking account of materially non-linear behavior, benefiting the highly efficient elastic-plastic analysis of girders with shear-lag effects. Based on the displacement-based fiber beam-column element, two additional degrees of freedom (DOFs) are added into the proposed model to consider the shear-lag warping deformations of the slabs. The new finite element (FE) formulations of the tangent stiffness matrix and resisting force vector are deduced with the variational principle of the minimum potential energy. Then the proposed element is implemented in the OpenSees computational framework as a newly developed element, and the full Newton iteration method is adopted for an iterative solution. The typical materially non-linear behaviors, including the cracking and crushing of concrete, as well as the plasticity of the reinforcement and steel girder, are all considered in the model. The proposed model is applied to several test cases under elastic or plastic loading states and compared with the solutions of theoretical models, tests, and shell/solid refined FE models. The results of these comparisons indicate the accuracy and applicability of the proposed model for the analysis of both concrete box girders and steel-concrete composite girders, under either elastic or plastic states.

  • The prediction of the low cycle fatigue (LCF) life of beam-column connections requires an LCF model that is developed using specific geometric information. The beam-column connection has several geometric variables, and changes in these variables must be taken into account to ensure sufficient robustness of the design. Previous research has verified that the finite element model (FEM) can be used to simulate LCF behavior at the end plate moment connection (EPMC). Three critical parameters, i.e., end plate thickness, beam flange thickness, and bolt distance, have been selected for this study to determine the geometric effects on LCF behavior. Seven FEMs for different geometries have been developed using these three critical parameters. The finite element analysis results have led to the development of a modified LCF model for the critical parameter groups.

  • Many researchers have tried to develop the piezoelectric shell element and verified them with the benchmarking problem of the piezoelectric bimorph beam since there is no experimental result for the control of shell structure with piezoelectric sensor/actuator. In this paper, the experiments are designed and performed to verify the control Performance of piezoelectric sensor/actuator on the shell structure. PVDF is easy to be attached on the surface of a shell structure but makes weak control forces. On the contrary, PZT makes control forces large enough to control the structure, but it is not easy to make a PZT element with curvature. To use PVDF as an actuator, the structure should be designed as flexible as possible and the voltage amplifier could make high control voltage. PVDF actuator powered by a voltage amplifier that generates output voltage from -200 to +200 volts, shows little control performance to control the vibration of an arch type shell structure. The performance of sensor looks good and the negative velocity feedback control works perfectly. The actuator voltage seems to be too small to verify the control effect Quantitatively. An experiment with high voltage amplifier is scheduled to verify the control effect Quantitatively.
