  • In this study, nano-scale copper powders were reduction treated in a hydrogen atmosphere at the relatively high temperature of $350^{\circ}C$ in order to eliminate surface oxide layers, which are the main obstacles for fabricating a nano/ultrafine grained bulk parts from the nano-scale powders. The changes in composition and microstructure before and after the hydrogen reduction treatment were evaluated by analyzing X-ray diffraction (XRD) line profile patterns using the convolutional multiple whole profile (CMWP) procedure. In order to confirm the result from the XRD line profile analysis, transmitted electron microscope observations were performed on the specimen of the hydrogen reduction treated powders fabricated using a focused ion beam process. A quasi-statically compacted specimen from the nano-scale powders was produced and Vickers micro-hardness was measured to verify the potential of the powders as the basis for a bulk nano/ultrafine grained material. Although the bonding between particles and the growth in size of the particles occurred, crystallites retained their nano-scale size evaluated using the XRD results. The hardness results demonstrate the usefulness of the powders for a nano/ultrafine grained material, once a good consolidation of powders is achieved.

  • This paper presents an SAR-data calibration technique using a well-calibrated scatterometer. At first a fully-polarimetric antenna pattern(magnitude and phase) of the antenna main-beam using a conducting sphere was measured. Then, this data were used to calibrate polarimetrically an auto-mounted network analyzer-based scatterometer system. This scatterometer system can be used to measure the accurate Mueller matrices of earth surfaces such as grass fields, rice fields and bare soil surfaces; i.e., the phase-difference parameters can be obtained as well as the radar scattering coefficients. If a polarimetrically calibrated scatterometer is operated at the same time with the SAR system, the scatterometer data can be used to correct the SAR data, especially the phase-difference parameters. It was found that the correction effect is remarkable for the degree of correlation ${\alpha}$, which is one of the phase-difference parameter, while the correction effect is negligible for the magnitude parameters(backscattering coefficients).

  • In this paper, we propose an equivalent model of array antennas that use open-ended waveguides for effective EM simulation. We first investigate an individual element that consists of an open-ended waveguide and square ground plane. The waveguide length, aperture size, and ground size of the individual element are adjusted to give a similar radiation pattern to that of the individual element of the original antenna. We then apply the designed equivalent model to two different types of array antennas, such as a microstrip patch array and a waveguide array antenna. Comparison of the simulation results using the equivalent model with the results obtained with the original antenna reveals a difference in gain of less than 0.2 dB and a difference in half power beam width(HPBW) of less than $1^{\circ}$. The designed equivalent model is then mounted on a simple aircraft, and the simulation results are again compared to results from the original antenna. We find a 60 % reduction in simulation resources and time when compared with the original antenna model.

  • The lack of experimental studies on the mechanical behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) haunched beams leads to difficulties in statistical and reliability analyses. This study performs stochastic and reliability analyses of the ultimate shear capacity of RC haunched beams based on nonlinear finite element analysis. The main aim of this study is to investigate the influence of uncertainty in material properties and geometry parameters on the mechanical performance and shear capacity of RC haunched beams. Firstly, 65 experimentally tested RC haunched beams and prismatic beams are analyzed via deterministic nonlinear finite element method by a special program (ATENA) to verify the efficiency of utilized numerical models, the shear capacity and the crack pattern. The accuracy of nonlinear finite element analyses is verified by comparing the results of nonlinear finite element and experiments and both results are found to be in a good agreement. Afterwards, stochastic analyses are performed for each beam where the RC material properties and geometry parameters are assigned to take probabilistic values using an advanced simulating procedure. As a result of stochastic analysis, statistical parameters are determined. The statistical parameters are obtained for resistance bias factor and the coefficient of variation which were found to be equal to 1.053 and 0.137 respectively. Finally, reliability analyses are accomplished using the limit state functions of ACI-318 and ASCE-7 depending on the calculated statistical parameters. The results show that the RC haunched beams have higher sensitivity and riskiness than the RC prismatic beams.

  • No significant improvement has been observed on the seismic performance of the ordinary steel reinforced concrete (SRC) columns compared with the reinforced concrete (RC) columns mainly because I, H or core cross-shaped steel cannot provide sufficient confinement for core concrete. Two improved SRC columns by constructing with new-type section steel were put forward on this background: a cross-shaped steel whose flanges are in contact with concrete cover by extending the geometry of webs, and a rotated cross-shaped steel whose webs coincide with diagonal line of the column's section. The advantages of new-type SRC columns have been proved theoretically and experimentally, while construction measures and seismic behavior remain unclear when the new-type columns are joined onto SRC beams. Seismic behavior of SRC joints with new-type section steel were experimentally investigated by testing 5 specimens subjected to low reversed cyclic loading, mainly including the failure patterns, hysteretic loops, skeleton curves, energy dissipation capacity, strength and stiffness degradation and ductility. Effects of steel shape, load angel and construction measures on seismic behavior of joints were also analyzed. The test results indicate that the new-type joints display shear failure pattern under seismic loading, and steel and concrete of core region could bear larger load and tend to be stable although the specimens are close to failure. The hysteretic curves of new-type joints are plumper whose equivalent viscous damping coefficients and ductility factors are over 0.38 and 3.2 respectively, and this illustrates the energy dissipation capacity and deformation ability of new-type SRC joints are better than that of ordinary ones with shear failure. Bearing capacity and ductility of new-type joints are superior when the diagonal cross-shaped steel is contained and beams are orthogonal to columns, and the two construction measures proposed have little effect on the seismic behavior of joints.

  • In this work, glass fiber/nylon 6 and woven glass fiber/nylon 6 composites have been fabricated using glass fiber reinforcements sized with 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane(CTMS) having a chloropropyl organo-functional group in the molecular chain end. The interfacial shear strength of glass fiber/nylon 6 composite was measured using a single fiber microbonding test and the interlaminar shear strength and the storage modulus of woven glass fabric/nylon 6 composites were measured using a short-warn shear test and a dynamic mechanical analysis, respectively, informing the effect of the concentration of CTMS on the properties. With increasing CTMS concentration, the interfacial properties of the composites were improved. The results on the interfacial shear strength, interlaminar shear strength, interlaminar failure pattern, and storage modulus with varying the CTMS concentration agree with each other.

  • A novel alignment-free micro-optic MZI filter has been demonstrated. The filter is composed of two fiber-pigtailed collimators and a beam-splittingplate with a periodically etched stripe pattern. We fabricated the plate through a standard lithographic formulation process by using a pyrex substrate glass with SU-8 resist coating on its one of the surfaces. The maximum insertion loss of the implemented filter was less than 2 dB over 1000 nm to 1600 nm and the extinction ratio was larger than 33 dB. The measured PDL within the 3-dB pass band of the filter was less than 0.15dB and the maximum extinction ratio variation was less than 2 dB even when the worst alignment error occured.

  • Recently, apartment designs are tend to be changed from the standard pattern by many causes and the beam-column structures are getting popular instead of wall structure system. Therefore, for the effective use of planed space the heights of apartment are tend to be higher and higher. According to Korea Building Code, earthquake resistance designs or seismic design for those high rise apartments must be more attentive and accurate, especially, dynamic periods of structures must be exactly measured, because those are very important for equivalent static analysis. The important subject of this study is to investigate the safety factors and seismic performance for natural period of high rise buildings by comparing the natural periods getting from ambient vibration method with those of Korea Building Code.

  • This study develops a simulator for determining the sonar sensor configuration of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) based on a scenario, in order for UUVs to conduct an effective anti-submarine warfare (ASW). First, we analyze the missions and operational concepts of UUVs in the field of ASW, and then select a Hold-at-Risk scenario as the one with the highest priority. Next, for modeling the components of a simulator, the motion, acoustic characteristic, and environment condition of the platforms (UUV and target submarine) are specified. Especially, based on the beam pattern of each sonar configuration considered in this paper, the passive sonar equation is used to verify target detection, and we further estimate the azimuth and elevation of the target using amplitude and phase of the received signal, respectively. The simulation results show the performance tendency depending on the sonar sensor configurations of a UUV, and the simulator provides a high applicability under various scenarios.

  • In this paper, design of a $2{\sim}18$ GHz wideband cavity-backed spiral antenna is investigated. Firstly, an arm pattern and a backing cavity of a cavity-backed spiral antenna are designed based on the design theory of an Archimedean spiral antenna as well as by using CST's MWS. VSWR, axial ratio, and HPBW(Half Power Beam Width) characteristics are considered in the simulation. Secondly, a Marchand coaxial balun is designed to meet the required VSWR within the frequency band of operation. Finally, the validity of these approaches is verified by comparing the simulated results with measured ones.
