  • For power constrained applications, IEEE 802.15.4 networks may be operated in beacon enabled mode with inactive period. In this paper, we propose the Virtual Arrival Mechanism (VAM) to avoid the congestion at the beginning of each contention access period (CAP). Virtual Arrival Mechanism (VAM) is a kind of traffic shaping that spread the traffics congested at the beginning of CAP into the whole CAP. By using VAM, collisions and energy consumption can be reduced. Finally, we evaluate the performance enhancement of VAM using NS-2 simulator.

  • The wireless sensor network technology becomes one of core technologies to make it possible to implement various e-business applications. Energy efficiency is an important issue in wireless sensor networks. IEEE 802.15.4, a representative international standard for wireless sensor networks, provides the beacon enabled mode for energy-efficient communication. However, the beacons may conflict each other when the network is of multi-hop topology such as mesh or cluster-tree topology with beacon-enabled mode. The beacon conflict causes the failure of synchronization between sensor nodes, and affects other nodes in the network in that unsynchronized nodes cannot participate in communication. In this paper, we suggest an energy-efficient beacon scheduling for the wireless sensor networks. Nodes can save their energy duringperiod and prevent beacon conflict using beacon scheduling. We implement the scheduling using QualNet, and evaluate the performance under mesh topology networks. It turns out that the proposed scheduling may improve the energy efficiency in the networks.

  • IEEE 802.15.4 is designed for low-rate wireless personal area networks (LR_WPAN) and it attempts to provide a low data rate, low power, low cost wireless networking on the device-level communication. In this paper, I have established a realistic environment for the effect of collision in nonbeacon-enabled mode and beacon enabled mode. The data throughput and delivery ratio are investigated as the performance metrics.

  • In beacon-enabled mode, beacon collision is a significant problem for the scalability of cluster-tree wireless sensor networks. In this paper, multi-channel time division scheduling (MCTS) is proposed to prevent beacon collisions and provide scalability. A coordinator broadcasts a beacon frame, including information on allocated channels and time-slots, and a new node determines its own channel and time-slot. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by comparing the proposed approach with a typical ZigBee. MCTS prevents beacon collisions in cluster-tree wireless sensor networks. It enables large-scale wireless sensor networks based on a cluster tree to be scalable and effectively constructed.

  • One of the obstacles preventing the Zigbee protocol from being widely used is the excessive power consumption of Zigbee devices in low bandwidth and low power requirement applications. This paper proposes a protocol that resolves the power efficiency problem. The proposed protocol reduces the power consumption of Zigbee devices in beacon-enabled networks without increasing the time taken by Zigbee peripherals to communicate with their coordinator. The proposed protocol utilizes a beacon control mechanism called a "sleep pattern," which is updated based on the previous event statistics. It determines exactly when Zigbee peripherals wake up or sleep. A simulation of the proposed protocol using realistic parameters and an experiment using commercial products yielded similar results, demonstrating that the protocol may be a solution to reduce the power consumption of Zigbee devices.

  • IEEE 802.15.4 is a global standard designed for emerging applications in low-rate wireless personal area networks (LR-WPANs). The standard provides beneficial features, such as a beacon-enabled mode and guaranteed time slots for realtime data delivery. However, how to optimally operate those features is still an open issue. For the optimal operation of the features, this paper proposes a holistic optimization method that jointly optimizes three cross-related problems: cluster-tree construction, nodes' power configuration, and duty-cycle scheduling. Our holistic optimization method provides a solution for those problems so that all the real-time packets can be delivered within their deadlines in the most energy-efficient way. Our simulation study shows that compared to existing methods, our holistic optimization can guarantee the on-time delivery of all real-time packets while significantly saving energy, consequently, significantly increasing the lifetime of the network. Furthermore, we show that our holistic optimization can be extended to take advantage of the spatial reuse of a radio frequency resource among long distance nodes and, hence, significantly increase the entire network capacity.

  • Wireless sensor networking technology is one of the basic infrastructures for ubiquitous environment. It enables us to gather various sensory data such as temperature, humidity, gas leakage, and speed from the remote sensor devices. To support these networking functions, IEEE WPAN working group makes standards for PHY and MAC, while ZigBee Alliance defines the standards for the network, security, and applications. The low-rate WPAN was emerged to have the characteristics of network resilience, low cost, and low power consumption. It has a broad range of applications including, but not limit to industrial control and monitoring, home automation, disaster forecast and monitoring, health care. In order to provide more intelligent and robust services, users want voice-based solutions to accommodate to low-rate WPAN. In this paper, we have evaluated voice quality of an IEEE 802.15.4 standard compliant voice node. Specifically, it includes the design of a voice node and experiments based on the prediction of voice quality using the E-model suggested by ITU-T G.107, and the network communication mechanisms considering beacon-enabled and nonbeacon-enabled networks for real-time voice communications.
