Floating resin pellets including plastics were surveyed from 7 coastal beaches near Young-il Bay during summer and winter season on 1998 ~ 2000 year. Plastic fabrication materials in the survey were founded with 6 items using the following; resin pellets, plastic debris, styrofoams, cigar filters, wood pieces and charcoals. The results deduced in the areas are as follows: 1. The seasonal variability of the all debris is revealed that summer season were remarkably larger than those of winter. This is deduced it is attributed to meteorological effects, e.g, the seasonal wind strength, current vectors and resorts of crowded people for beach enjoy. And the distribution of plastic debris is Pohang Songdo $12.9ea/m^2$, Pohang Bookbu $8.8ea/m^2$, Togoo $4.9ea/m^2$, Chilpo $3.2ea/m^2$, Hwajin $1.4ea/m^2$, Wolpo and Guryongpo $0.8ea/m^2$ respectively. 2. Compared with each beaches, Songdo beach, northern part beach of Pohang city and Togoo beach have higher densities than those of the others. Especially, the highest densities of all debris were discovered in the Songdo beach of Pohang city. 3. The change of density over the whole year was similarly distributed in quantities and fabrication materials. 4. These surveys were founded that the most parts of plastic debris materials were made up with PE and PP.

Changes in the interactions among incident ocean water waves, coastal debris (marine debris), and the back vegetation zone line on a natural sandy beach on the island of Jinu-do in the Nakdong river estuary were investigated. The study involved a cross-sectional field survey of the beach, numerical modeling of incident ocean water waves, field observations of the distribution of coastal debris, and vegetation zone line tracking using GPS. The conclusions of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) The ground level of the swash zone (sandy beach) on Jinu-do is rising, and the vegetation zone line, which is the boundary of the coastal sand dunes, shows a tendency to move forward toward the open sea. The vegetation zone line is developing particularly strongly in the offshore direction in areas where the ground level is elevated by more than 1.5 m. (2) The spatial distributions of incident waves differed due to variations in the water depth at the front of the beach, and the wave run-up in the swash zone also displayed complex spatial variations. With a large wave run-up, coastal debris may reach the vegetation zone line, but if the run-up is smaller, coastal debris is more likely to deposit in the form of an independent island on the beach. The deposited coastal debris can then become a factor determining which vegetation zone line advances or retreats. Finally, based on the results of this investigation, a schematic concept of the mechanisms of interaction between the coastal debris and the coastal vegetation zone line due to wave action was derived.

(1) This study was carried out to obtain seasonal fluctuations of marine debris in 5 beaches near the Southern Coast of Korea during May, 1999 - April, 2000. The results are as follows: 1. The density of marine debris was remarkably highest at Namhae beach among 5 beaches. The major part of debris in the beach was styrofoam, with the density of 348.5${ea/km}^2$. But, it was Songjung where the largest amount of resin pellets existed. 2. The composition of styrofoam consisted of 51% of the marine debris, wood& papers was 11%, resin pellets & plastics were 8% and others were 16%. 3. Seasonal fluctuations irregularly change in each beach, but the amount of resin pellets were found to be large only in September. It is estimated that resin pellets are beached upon the coastal beaches by the strong warm currents(Tushima currents) during the summer season. 4. Debris fabrication materials that were found had most of parts made up of PE 71.2%, PP 21.2% and EVA 7.7% through these surveys. 5. In the polluted state, the medium one among the 3 specifications(o1d, medium and new state) occupied 88.5% or so.

In order to analyze the pollution extent of small plastic debris(SPD) ashore on the shoreline of coastal flow, 12 of survey was conducted at Song-Jung beach of Busan for several years. The sampled beach was divided into 9 sites with unit area($m^2$). Many of SPD were detected in the southern part of the beach and classified into 11 items as P1 to P11 according to the contents. Average densities of total items' weight were $2.955g/m^2$ and weights of P2, P3 item were composed of about 64% among them. And average densities of total items' quantity were $56.259ea/m^2$ and quantities of P6 only were composed of about 63%. Seeing the seasonal variation, fall season was abundant extremely whereas nearly nothing in spring. The correlation of weights and quantities have reliable coefficients to some extent on sites and season but nearly don't have reliances on item, tide, wind and precipitation. Many researching data were required if possible in order to discussing about the correlation.

In order to analyze the pollution characteristics of small plastic debris(SPD) ashore on the shoreline of coastal flow, 12 times of survey were conducted on the Gwanganri beach of Busan for nearly 3 years. The sampled stations on the beach were divided into 11 squared survey sites from St. G1 to G11(see [Fig. 1]) and all of SPD was sorted into 11 items like P1 to P11 according to the kind of plastic materials and products(see
). 1. Total weights of them were widely ranged from 3.23g to 30.58g and also total amounts, from 39 ea to 398 ea on each site. 2. The ratio of items, P2 and P3, were accounted for 63% among all of them. 3. The seasonal variabilities of them were not founded with remarkable. 4. The correlation of total weights and amounts have reliable coefficients to some extent on the survey sites, but nearly didn't have reliances on items. 5. The average densities of total weights and amounts were computed with $4.506g/m^2$, $51.936ea/m^2$, respectively.

The correlation and interaction mechanisms between marine debris and the vegetation zone were studied on the Jinu-do natural beach of the Nakdong river estuary. Laboratory wind tunnel experiments were carried out under the wind-field and bottom-sand conditions using wind tunnel test equipment to investigate the sedimentation characteristics of wind-drift sand deposition around marine debris and the vegetation zone. The major environmental factors/loads considered in this study were the motion of sand by wind on the beach, deposition of marine debris, and change in the vegetation zone/line. When the marine debris was installed in the wind tunnel, deposition at the front of the structure appeared first by wind action, and then deposition developed from behind at 70% of the front ground level. In contrast, in the case of vegetation, the deposition phenomenon appeared first from behind the vegetation zone/line, and was 60% higher than the front. When the height of the debris and vegetation was the same, the required experimental time to bury the vegetation completely was about twice that of the marine debris.

Transport of marine debris between countries is a potential source of diplomatic conflicts. U-i Island in Shinan County, Jeonnam Province has been reported by media as being damaged by marine debris from foreign countries. However, scientific researches on those marine debris have not been published. So, the features of foreign marine debris on Seongchon Beach in U-i Island were surveyed on Feb. 2012. The ratio of marine debris from foreign countries was 34.7% by number of items, 56.3% by weight, and 48.5% by volume in $200m^2$ transacts. Most of them, 98.9% in number, were inferred to be originated from China. The most abundant items were plastic beverage bottles and black floats. The total number of black floats was 539 within the 1,100m beach. Fifteen of them had information on manufactured locations, of which 87.6% were Liaoning Province in northern China. As domestic policy cannot prevent the inflow of the marine debris from foreign countries, countermeasures should be sought out from the international cooperation with the neighboring countries. For the black floats, recycling method should be developed as lots of the same types of black floats are drifted ashore in winter. And, as the U-i Island is a National Park with its valuable natural heritages, methods should be designed to minimize impacts on dune topography and ecology.

A study on the occurrence and movement of marine debris is required for protecting the marine environment and ecosystem from marine pollution. The aim of this study is to show annual production and movement characteristics through analysis for the flow path, composition and the sources of marine debris. This study analyzed the distribution and characteristics of marine debris collected in the region of $100\;m{\times}20\;m$($=2,000\;m^2$) at the Daekwang Beach in the Yellow Sea. During the collection period from 2008 to 2010, the total weight of the marine debris was 1,445 kg in this site. The most marine debris was plastic amounting to 46.5% of the whole collection; the rest were styrofoam(20%) and wooden material(12.6%). The amount of marine debris mused from foreign country observed 155.5 kg, more than 90% of them was plastic came from China such as buoys. Additionally, this study analyzed seasonal change if marine environment to understand occurrence amount change if marine debris. 2009 and 2010 was high occurrence ratio in season that the north wind is very strong and the occurrence rate appeared highest by 40% in the summer(July) of 2008 that appeared westbound tidal current. Overall, marine Debris mused from foreign country was high occurrence ratio in January, May and then November has a lot of quantity secondly. While, occurrence ratio was the highest by 46% summer(July) in 2008, but in 2009 and 2010 showed the lowest rate to 4%.

Abundance and composition of marine debris on 13 beaches of Tongyeong City, South Korea were surveyed in 2013 Autumn. The average quantity of macro debris (>25 mm) was about 30 particle/$m^2$ and that of micro debris (1 mm-25 mm) was about 26,971 particle/$m^2$. This is a very high level compared with other areas of South Korea and the other countries. Among the 7 material types of debris (styrofoam, hard plastic, fiber, metal, glass, wood and others), styrofoam composed a large portion: 75% of macro debris and 98% of micro debris. And among the 'whole' styrofoam debris items whose original volume is remained more than 50%, styrofoam buoy debris composed 93%. This result suggests that the beaches surveyed are seriously contaminated by marine debris, and most of its sources are aquaculture styrofoam buoys. Management of styrofoam buoy debris used for oyster aquaculture in Tongyeong City is important not only for Tongyeong city, but also for other areas, because Tongyeong city hosts the biggest number of oyster aquaculture areas in South Korea.
When the mouth of the Nakdong River, opens its floodgate, thousands of tons of litter should flown into the South Sea, moving towards nearby coast, thus causing serious social and economic damage. For this reason, in the present study, research was performed on one certain area in northeast coast of Geoje island, which is assumed as area damaged due to rainy season and typhoon in 2012, and research for trace of movement route was implemented by using buoy to identify characteristic of movement of floating debris caused from Nakdong River. Flows related to the movement of floating debris was also identified by analyzing ocean meteorological environment. As a result of the study, total 40 tons of litter composed of grasses and trees(or plants litter) were flown into Heungnam beach on 16th, Jul which is the rainy season. Plus, the location tracking buoy, which was dropped when the typhoon SANBA was coming, was passed by southern sea of Gadeok-do and was flown into Geoje beach 1 ~ 2 days after it was dropped. The wind direction was mostly northeasterly wind around the Geoje beach at the time the buoy and floating debris were flown into northeast coast and there was common sea surface currents which was flowing into the coast.
