  • Dibenzo-18-crown-6, dibenzo-21-crown-7 and dihydroxy dibenzo-18-crown-6 were synthesized by Bayer-Villiger oxidation strategy. Dibenzo-18-crown-6 and dibenzo-21-crown-7 could be synthesized through a three-step protocol starting from salicylaldehyde. Salicylaldehyde was reacted with bis-(2-chloroethyl)ether using $K_2CO_3$ in acetonitrile to link the two phenolic groups with the oxyethylene bridge followed by conversion of the formyl group to the hydroxy group via a Baeyer-Villiger reaction and finally linking the two phenolic group with appropriate oxyethylene bridge. The two target crown ethers were obtained in overall yield, 24% and 30%, respectively. This method has a great potential for synthesis of symmetrical as well as unsymmetrical dibenzo crowns with varying oxyethylene bridges. Baeyer-Villiger oxidation could be used to prepare dihydroxy derivative of dibenzo-18-crown-6 through acetylation of dibenzo-18-crown-6 followed by Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. The Baeyer-Villiger oxidation could be substantially accelerated using trifluoroacetic acid.

  • In a trial to select suitable fungicides for developing a spray program that can control apple white rot effectively, after-infection activities in some protective fungicides were detected. Six fungicides, mancozeb, propineb, benomyl, folpet, azoxystrobin and iminoctadine-triacetate, which had been extensively used in apple orchards, were sprayed on 12-year-old apple trees (cv. Fuji) at 15-day intervals from late May to late July. Disease incidences and infection frequencies of the fruit bagged just before and soon after each spray were examined. When the infection frequency or disease incidence of the fruit bagged after each spraying of fungicide was significantly lower than those of the fruit bagged before spraying, the fungicides appeared to confer after-infection activity. The six fungicides showed diverse activities on white rot: folpet showed after-infection activity on disease development, iminoctadine-triacetate showed after-infection activity on infection, azoxystrobin showed after-infection activity on disease development and infection, and mancozeb, propineb and benomyl showed no distinct activity. The activity of a fungicide became much higher when it was sprayed alternately with other fungicide rather than successive spraying of the same fungicide. Analysis of the properties of these protective fungicides could lead to the development of a highly effective spray program against white rot.

  • Artemisinin, a sesquiterpene lactone, is isolated from the leafy portion of the Artemisia annua and has been known to be effective against Plasmodium species. Since the genera of Plasmodium and Eimeria(E) tenella are included the same order, Eucoccidiidae, it is presumed that artemisinin may also be effective against E tenella. In order to study the anticoccididal effects of artemisinin, the chickens inoculated with E tenella were treated with artemisinin at different concentrations as feed additive and the results were compared to those of non-medicated, infected control(NIC) and non-medicated, non-infected control(NNC) group. Artemisinin demonstrated anticoccidial effects by showing, compared to NIC group, improved results in all parameters, such as bloody diarrhea, lesion scores, the numbers of excreted oocystis in feces, body weight gain and feed conversion rate. Anticoccidial index(ACI) of artemisinin treated group (5ppm~50ppm) was higher than that of NIC group. Improvements were greatest in the group treated with artemisinin 50ppm with an ACI of 147.6. These results indicate that artemisinin has anticoccidial effects on the Eimeria tenella.

  • The herb, Artemisia(A) annua, a member of the composital family, has been used successfully for malaria(Plasmodium sp) patients in china. Since the genera of Plasmodium and Eimeria(E) tenella are related, it is presumed that A annua may also be effective against E tenella. In order to study the anticoccidial effects of A annua the chickens inoculated with E tenella were treated with the extract of A annua in drinking water and the results were compared to those of non-medicated, infected control(NIC) and non-medicated, non-infected control(NNC) group. A annua demonstrated anticoccidial effects by showing, compared to NIC group, improved results in all parameters, such as bloody diarrhea, lesion scores, the numbers of excereted oocysts in feces, body weight gain and feed conversion rate. Anticoccidial index(ACI) of the A annua treated group (123.4) was higher than that of NIC group (96.9). These results indicate that Artemisia annua has anticoccidial effects on the Eimeria tenella.

  • Thirteen strains of Clostridium perfringens were isolated from the pigs with hemorrhagic enteritis. The characteristics of the outbreaks, clinical signs and lesions were examined. The biochemical properties, type of toxin and susceptibility to antimicrobial agents of the isolates were investigated. The results could be summarized as follows ; 1. Almost of the pigs affected with hemorrhagic enteritis, 17 cases examined from 1989 to 1992, were piglets less than 7 day old. 2. The average mortality rate of piglet less than 7 day old affected with hemorragic and necrotic enteritis was 48.5%. 3. The clinical signs of pigs with hemorrhagic enteritis were depression, hemorrhagic diarrhea, anemia and dehydration. Necropsy of the infected pigs showed typical hemorrhage of upper intestine and necrosis of mucosal membrane. 4. The characteristic biochemical properties of the isolates were 2-band hemolysis, positive reaction of reverse CAMP test and formation of LV precipitate in egg yolk medium. 5. The toxin type of the 13 isolates, investigated by mouse inoculation test, was all type C strains of Clostridium perfringens. 6. In susceptibility test to antimicrobial agents, 13 isolates of Clostridium perfringens were highly sensitive to ampicillin, enrofloxacin(Baytril), cephalothin, penicillin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.

  • In this paper we compared the performance of interpolation algorithms for Bayer patterned image sensors under the various illumination intensities. As the interpolation algorithms, we used bilinear color interpolation and adaptive fuzzy color interpolation and our experimentation shows that performance of interpolation algorithms depend on the lighting conditions; in low intensity of illumination, bilinear color interpolation with median filter performs best, in high intensity of illumination, adaptive fuzzy color interpolation performs best, and in between bilinear color interpolation performs best. This study suggested an interpolation scheme which applies different interpolation algorithm according to the intensity of the input image, resuting in the better image quality.

  • Low soda alumina powder was fabricated using silica (${\alpha}$-quartz) as an agent for removing soda components in the alumina. Quartz powder 2 mm in size was added to aluminum hydroxide obtained through the Bayer process, and then the mixture was heated at various temperatures. Finally, the heat-treated powders were sieved for classification. In this study, the effects of the quartz amount and heating temperature on the mechanism of removing soda were examined. A minimum soda content of 0.005 wt% was observed at the conditions of 15 wt% quartz (based on $Al(OH)_3$ amount) heat-treated at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 8 h. The soda components, such as $Na_2O$, NaOH, and $Na_2CO_3$, in alumina were ionized and activated at high temperature, and this facilitated the reaction with quartz silica and alumina producing nepheline. The advantages of using quartz include low iron content and low cost in comparison with the conventional de-soda process using chamotte, another silicate mineral.

  • In most digital cameras, images are obtained by a sensor overlaid by the color filter array (CFA) such as Bayer, demanding a demosaicking procedure to rebuild the full resolution color images. However, due to the nature of sensor, it is necessary to consider denoising step to remove the noise. In this paper, we analyze demosaicking and denoising jointly and show that the proposed method can solve the denoising issue by simple manner, well suppress different level of noises. The proposed algorithm yields comparable performances measured by several image quality assessment (CPSNR, SCIELAB, and FSIM), while the computational cost is low.

  • Clostridium perfringens has been identified as a causative organism in necrotic enteritis in chicken. The bacterium has been classified into five toxigenic types (A through E) based on the pattern of the production of major lethal toxins. Seroneutralization with mice or guinea pigs usually has been used to type the organism. Of the types, types A and C of the bacterium had been recognized as the major pathogenic types in chicken. In this experiment, we isolated nine field strains of C perfringens from chicken showing necrotic enteritis in clinical symptoms and pathologic findings and identified by biochemical tests. In order to type the organism, a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used with primers on major lethal toxin genes instead of seroneutralization. Amplification of only a toxin gene with the PCR suggested that the disease in chicken was due to type A of C perfringens in Korea. Furthermore, the PCR method can be replaced with seroneutralization to type C perfringens in future.

  • Tefuryltrione is a new hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor, which has been recently registered for the use for paddy rice, Korea. Dose-response studies were conducted to compare rice safety and weed control efficacy of tefuryltrione against Eleocharis kuroguwai. When rice and E. kuroguwai were applied at a range of doses of tefuryltrione, $GR_{90}$ values (the dose required to inhibit weed growth by 90%) of E. kuroguwai were $82.38-93.39g\;a.i.\;ha^{-1}$ in two independent experiments. The $GR_{10}$ values (the dose required to inhibit rice growth by 10%) of tefuryltrione for rice were $297.77-471.54g\;a.i.\;ha^{-1}$. As a result, the selectivity indices ($GR_{10}$ for $rice/GR_{90}$ for E. kuroguwai) of tefuryltrione were 3.19-5.72. Therefore, these results demonstrate that tefuryltrione has a relatively high selectivity between rice and E. kuroguwai with a high herbicidal activity against E. kuroguwai and a good rice safety.
