  • Fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle is an attractive solution to reduce pollutants, such as noise and carbon dioxide emission. This study presents an approach for energy management and control algorithm based on energetic macroscopic representation for a fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle that is powered by proton exchange membrane fuel cell, battery and supercapacitor. First, the detailed model of the fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle, including fuel cell, battery, supercapacitor, DC-DC converters and powertrain system, are built on the energetic macroscopic representation. Next, the power management strategy was applied to manage the energy among the three power sources. Moreover, the control scheme that was based on back-stepping sliding mode control and inversed-model control techniques were deduced. Simulation tests that used a worldwide harmonized light vehicle test procedure standard driving cycle showed the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

  • In this work a new process was developed for the sulfonation of the chemicallly stable engineering polymer polyethersulfone as membrane materials for electrodialysis or a flow battery applications. Commercially available polyethersulfone polymer was partially sulfonated using a CSA sulfonating agent in a dichloromethane solvent, which sulfonated polyethersulfone with various sulfonation levels have been prepared. Sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) membranes with different ion capacities were prepared for the purpose of identifying cation exchange membrane properties, in an attempt to find a low cost replacement for Nafion, which most of the perfluorinated membranes, known to exhibit a prolonged service life, are expensive and difficult to process. The following features were determined: the degree of sulfonation, water uptake, thermal analysis, and electrochemical properties such as ion exchange capacities, resistivity, selectivity of ion permeation. The surface of the cation exchange membranes, decomposed with the H202-treatment, were observed by using scanning electron microscope. The area resistivities of SPES mebranes in 5N-NaOH decreased from $2,150{\;}{\Omega}-cm2$ to less than $15{\Omega}-cm2$ as the ion exchange capacity (IEC) increased from 0.62 to 1.73 millieequivlants per dry gram(meq/dg).eq/dg).

  • In order to understand the counter anionic effects in a non-aqueous vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB), we synthesized four types of electrolyte salts (1-ethyltriethamine tertafluoroborate, [E-TEDA]+[BF4], 1-ethyltriethamine hexafluorophosphate, [E-TEDA]+[PF6], 1-butyltriethylamine tertafluoroborate, [B-TEDA]+[BF4], and 1-buthyltriethamine hexafluorophosphate [B-TEDA]+[PF6]) by counter anion exchange reaction after the SN2 reaction. We confirmed the successful synthesis of the electrolyte salts [E-TEDA]+[Br] and [B-TEDA]+[Br] via 1H-NMR spectroscopy and GC-mass analysis before the counter anion exchange reaction. The electric potential of the vanadium acetylacetonate, V(acac)3, as an energy storage chemical was shown to be 2.2 V in the acetonitrile solvent with each of the [E-TEDA]+[BF4], [E-TEDA]+[PF6], [B-TEDA]+[BF4], and [B-TEDA]+[PF6] electrolyte salts. In a non-aqueous VRFB with a commercial Neosepta AFN membrane, the maximum voltages reached 1.0 V and 1.5 V under a fixed current value of 0.1 mA in acetonitrile with the [E-TEDA]+[BF4] and [E-TEDA]+[PF6] electrolyte salts, respectively. The maximum voltage was 0.8 V and 1.1 V under a fixed current value of 0.1 mA in acetonitrile with the [B-TEDA]+[BF4] and [B-TEDA]+[PF6] electrolyte salts, respectively. From these results, we concluded that in the non-aqueous VRFB more of the [PF6] counter anion than the [BF4] counter anion was transported onto the commercial Neosepta AFN anion exchange membrane.

  • Secondary energy conversion systems have been briskly developed owing to environmental issue and problems of fossil fuel. They are basically operated based on electro-chemical systems. In addition, ion exchange membranes are one of the significant factors to determine performance in their systems. Therefore, the ion exchange membranes in suitable conditions must be developed to improve the performance for the electro-chemical systems. These ion exchange membranes can be classified into various types such as cation exchange membrane, anion exchange membrane and bipolar membrane. Their membranes have distinct characteristics according to the chemical, physical and morphological structure. In this review, the types of ion exchange membranes and their fabrication processes are described with main characteristics. Moreover, applications of ion exchange membranes in newly developed energy conversion systems such as reverse electrodialysis, redox flow battery and water electrolysis process are described including their roles and requirements.

  • Remaining useful life (RUL) estimation of the Li-ion battery has gained great interest because it is necessary for quality assurance, operation planning, and determination of the exchange period. This paper presents the RUL estimation of an Li-ion battery for an energy storage system using exponential function for the degradation model and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach for parameter estimation. The MCMC approach is dependent upon information such as model initial parameters and input setting parameters which highly affect the estimation result. To overcome this difficulty, this paper offers a guideline for model initial parameters based on the regression result, and MCMC input parameters derived by comparisons with a thorough search of theoretical results.

  • Recently, there are many efforts focused on development of Redox Flow Battery (RFB) for large energy storage system. Economical hydrocarbon membranes alternative to fluorinated membranes for RFB membrane are receiving attention. In this study, characteristics of poly(arylene ether sulfone) (PAES) were compared with expensive fluorinated membrane at VRB (Vanadium Redox Flow Battery) operation condition. Permeability of vanadium ion through membrane, ion exchange capacity (IEC), change of OCV, swelling, charge-discharge curves and energy efficiency were measured. PAES membrane showed lower permeability of vanadium ion, higher IEC and then higher energy efficiency compared with Nafion 117 membranes.

  • The trends of recent developed a pet robot which interacts with people are increased gradually. There are a few pet robots that are a robot dog, robot cat, and robot fish. The pet robot is featured that it is possible to sympathize and give pleasure to human. The pet robots express delight, sorrow, surprise, and hunger through the artificial intelligence. Previously, the pet robot has to exchange the battery when it is exhausted. Commercialized robots have a self-recharging function, which express hunger. Robot dog AIBO, SONY in Japan, checks the battery for expressing hunger. They find an energy station for recharge. While operation time of AIBO is 1 hour 30 minutes, recharging time is 2 hours. Recharging time is longer than operation time. During the recharge, they don't operate. We obtain a motivation for eating the battery when find the problem. In this paper, introduce an Autonomous Eating Pet Robot and propose a design for realization. The Autonomous Eating Pet Robot has a function that is the most basic instinct that is finding a food and evacuating.

  • A new power control algorithm for wireless communication which can be applied to various near distance communications and USN/RFID systems is proposed. This technique has been applied and tested to lithium coin battery operated UHF/microwave transceiver systems to show extremely long communication life time without battery exchange. The power control algorithm is based on the dynamic prediction method of arrival time for incoming packet at the receiver. We obtain 16mA current consumption in the TX module and 20mA current consumption in the RX module. The advantage provided by this method compared to others is that both master transceiver and slave transceiver can be low power consumption system.
