Low Cost High Power Density Photovoltaic Power Conditioning System with an Energy Storage System

  • A new low cost high power density photovoltaic power conditioning system (PV PCS) with an energy storage system is proposed in this paper. Its high power density and cost effectiveness can be achieved through the unification of the maximum power point tracker and the battery charger/discharger. Despite the reduced power stage, the proposed system can achieve the same performance in terms of maximum power point tracking and battery charging/discharging as the conventional system. When a utility power failure happens, the proposed system cannot perform maximum power point tracking at the UPS mode. However, the predetermined battery voltage near the maximum power point of the PV array can effectively generate a reasonable PV power even at the UPS mode. Therefore, it features a simpler structure, less mass, lower cost, and fewer devices. Finally, to confirm the operation, validity, and features of the proposed system, a theoretical analysis and experimental results from a single phase AC 220Vrms/1.5kW prototype are presented.

  • 본 논문은 1.8MW 급 ESS용 배터리 충방전기 개발에 관한 논문이다. 제안된 회로의 구성은 삼상 교류 입력을 받아 DC 1150V로 변환시키는 3상 AC/DC 컨버터부와 배터리를 충전과 방전시키는 buck-boost 컨버터부로 구성된다. 출력은 최대 900V, 2000A 이며 C/C, C/V, C/P 모드로 제어된다. 3상 AC/DC 컨버터는 역률을 개선하고, 입력 고조파를 저감시킬 수 있으며, 계통으로 회생이 가능하다는 장점이 있다. 시뮬레이션 및 실험을 통하여 배터리 충방전기의 성능을 검증하였으며, 실제 시스템에 적용하여 충전 및 방전 시험을 완료하였다.

  • Uninterruptible Power Supply(UPS) is largely divided into passive-standby, line-interactive and double-conversion methods. This paper proposes the double-conversion UPS for low cost and high performance. The proposed UPS are composed of PFC, inverter, battery charger and discharger. Finally, the validity of proposed UPS was verified by experiments.

  • 본 논문에서는 다모듈 다위상 양방향 배터리 충방전 회로의 소신호 특성을 해석하여, 적절한 제어기 및 보상기 회로설계를 제안한다. 제안된 회로를 바탕으로 폐루프 응답 특성을 시뮬레이션과 측정을 하여 분석하고 검증한다. 최종적으로 설계된 제어기를 적용하여 양방향 배터리 충방전 회로를 동작 시켜봄으로써 안정성과 부하변동에 따른 응답 특성을 관측해 본다.

  • Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs) can be largely divided into the passive-standby, line-interactive and double-conversion methods. This paper proposes a double-conversion UPS with a low cost and high performance. This single phase UPS uses a single-loop robust voltage controller and 1-switch voltage doubler strategy PFC. The proposed UPS is composed of a single phase PFC, a half-bridge inverter, a battery charger and a battery discharger. Finally, the validity of proposed UPS was verified by various experimental tests.

  • Formation process through charge/discharge operation is needed in manufacturing Li-ion battery. In the process battery is discharged by a load resistor of discharger. Here, energy losses happen. Therefore, in this paper, the efficient energy operation of battery is studied in the charge/discharge system based on DC ${\mu}-Grid$. A result of computer simulation shows that if in the charge/discharge system based on DC ${\mu}-Grid$, the number of discharge batteries in comparison with three charge battery sets exceeds 133%, voltage fluctuation that occurs while the grid voltage stabilizes, which makes the system fatal. Therefore, it was demonstrated that a remarkable energy saving effect could be achieved when the number of discharge battery set is maintained to be 133% in comparison with three charge battery sets.

  • Lithium-ion batteries are used in many fields due to their high energy density, fast charging conditions, and long cycle life. However, overcharging, over-discharging, physical damage, and use of lithium-ion batteries at high temperatures can reduce battery life and cause damage to people due to fire or explosion due to damage to the protection circuit. In order to reduce the risk of these batteries and improve battery performance, the characteristics of the charging and discharging process must be analyzed and understood. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze the charging and discharging characteristics of lithium-ion batteries using a battery charger and discharger and simulator to reduce the risk of loss of life due to overcharge and overdischarge, as well as casualties from fire and explosion due to damage to the protection circuit.

  • A new high power density and low cost Photovoltaic Power Conditioning System (PV PCS) with energy storage system is proposed. Moreover, the high voltage stress across the link-capacitor can be relieved through the series-connected link-capacitor with the battery. Therefore, a large number of series/parallel-connected link-capacitors can be reduced by 4-times. Therefore, it features a simpler structure, less mass, lower cost, and fewer devices. Modeling and Analysis of Active-Clamp, Full-Bridge Boost Converter (능동 클램프 풀브릿지 부스트 컨버터에 대한 모델링 및 분석)

  • Recently, an active-clamp, full-bridge boost converter has been actively studied for high-power applications such as power factor correction and battery discharger. However, DC and AC modeling for this converter has not conquered. In this paper, a DC and small-signal AC modeling for the active-clamp, full-bridge boost converter is described. Based on the operation principle, the ac part of the converter can be replaced by a do counterpart. Then, a conceptual equivalent circuit is derived by rearranging the switches. The equivalent circuit for this converter consists of CCM (Continuous conduction mode) boost and DCM (Discontinuous conduction mode) buck converter. The analyses for the equivalent CCM boost and DCM buck converter are done using the model of PWM switch. The theoretical modeling results are confirmed through experiment or SIMPLIS simulation.

  • 차량용 양방향 DC/DC 컨버터에 적합한 새로운 토포로지 및 그 구성방법을 제안한다. 제안된 구성방식은 공통접지를 사용하는 새로운 양방향 공진형 충전펌프 토포로지와 기존 양방향 컨버터와 결합한 2단방식의 양방향 DC/DC 컨버터이다. 제안된 2배 승압 공진형 충전펌프는 전력변환 효율 증대와 병렬 구동 시 공진회로가 영향이 받지 않게 하기위해 출력 측으로 전력 전달시 인덕터가 입력전원과 직렬로 구성하게 하였다.
