Uninterruptible power supplies are extensively used as backup power in various applications such as telecommunication systems, Internet data centers, hospitals, and military technologies. Some of these applications require a considerable number of batteries, and the maintenance of such batteries is critical for the reliability of a system. However, batteries are chemical energy storage devices that deteriorate over time and frequently inspecting their performance and suitability is difficult. A real-time remote battery inspection system that applies electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is proposed and implemented in this study. The proposed system consists of a small inspection circuit and software for control. The former is developed to monitor the impedance variation of the battery and to diagnose its state. The validity and feasibility of the proposed system is proven by experimental results.

In this study, the design and operating strategy of DC home grid with PV, battery, and ultracapacitor have been discussed, The proposed sizing method can find the optimum size of the battery and PV which can reduce yearly utility energy consumption, whereas the control scheme can maintain the DC-bus voltage level of the DC home grid under different operating conditions, where day or night time operation, load and PV power levels, and the maximum current and state-of-charge of batter are considered. In addition, a supervisory power management strategy has been suggested, and its validity has been verified by HILS (hardware in-the-loop simulation) results.

In the conventional E-bike, a 42 V/10 A Li-ion battery drives a 24 V/10 A BLDC motor via a 6-switch PWM DC/AC inverter. The major problems of the conventional battery-fed motor drive systems are listed as follows. To charge the battery, an external battery charger (adapter) is required, which degrades the portability of E-bike users. In addition, given the high-frequency operation of the motor drive inverter, the switching losses are significant, which degrades the whole power efficiency. High-voltage batteries (42 V) require a complex battery management system (BMS), which degrades the reliability of the battery pack. In this paper, an embedded boost-converter battery charger for E-bikes is proposed. The variable output boost converter, which converts 16.8 V battery voltage to the required variable voltage of the inverter input, can use a low-voltage battery and thus improve the reliability of batteries. By varying the inverter input voltage via boost converter, a DC link voltage control method can be applied to reduce the switching frequency of the inverter, which improves the whole power efficiency. Given that the function of a flyback charger is integrated in the proposed boost converter, the portability of the E-bike user can be maximized by excluding an external adapter. The validity of the proposed circuit will be confirmed by operation mode analysis and simulation. Moreover, experimental results of integrative charger using Li-ion battery and 200 W motor test will be showed with a prototype sample as well.
The phase-lock technique is applied to a three-phase semi-bridge type battery charger system. Using an inner fast dynamic loop, the phase-locked voltage control (PLVC) technique of three-phase semi-bridge converter is proposed to give a frequency synchronism and to reduce the subharmonics due to the unbalance of transformer or power line. To protect the power devices, the two stage soft-start, function with softly locking the phase and softly increasing the current is presented. As limiting the reference voltage of the inner voltage control loop, muti-lock phenomena are removed on the PLVC loop. A current limit function is also proposed to limit the current of battery and converter. The proposed controller is confirmed through experiment results.

A dual-mode power management for a hybrid-electric UAV with a cruise power of 200W is proposed and empirically verified. The subject vehicle is a low-speed long-endurance UAV powered by a solar cell, a fuel cell, and a battery pack, which operate in the same voltage bounds. These power sources of different operational characteristics can be managed in two different methods: passive management and active management. This study proposes a new power management system named PMS2, which employs a bypass circuit to control the individual power sources. The PMS2 normally operates in active mode, and the bypass circuit converts the system into passive mode when necessary. The output characteristics of the hybrid system with the PMS2 are investigated under simulated failures in the power sources and the conversion of the power management methods. The investigation also provides quantitative comparisons of efficiencies of the system under the two distinct power management modes. In the case of the solar cell, the efficiency difference between the active and the passive management is shown to be 0.34% when the SOC of the battery is between 25-65%. However, if the SOC is out of this given range, i.e. when the SOC is at 90%, using active management displays an improved efficiency of 6.9%. In the case of the fuel cell, the efficiency of 55% is shown for both active and passive managements, indicating negligible differences.

This paper studies the stand-alone photovoltaic system for the solar lighting lamp. The solar lighting lamp has PV modules, batteries, and charge & discharge system. The charge efficiency is improved for the control of each battery which is divided the charge from the discharge to change the structure of existing solar lighting lamp charge & discharge system. so, the charge and discharge times are reduced of 50% and the depth of discharge control can be controlled in the discharge cut off voltage. It can be effective of the battery use. If a battery is out of order, this system can be executed for a regular period. So we saved the repair cost and developed of system's stabilization. It Is possible to make economical effects to apply for solar lighting lamp used photovoltaic system.

In this paper, a prototype of an active auxiliary quasi-resonant DC link (QRDCL) snubber assisted voltage source bidirectional power converter (AC to DC and DC to AC) operating at zero voltage soft-switching (BVS) PWM nlode is presented for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The operating principle of this QRDCL circuit and multifunctional control-based converter system, including PWM inverter mode in which energy flows from the battery bank to the three-phase utility-grid in addition to an active PWM converter mode in which energy flows from the utility-grid to the battery banks are described respectively by the control implementation on the basis of d-q coordinate plane transformation. The multifunctional operation characteristics of this three-phase ZVS PWM bi-directional converter with QRDCL is demonstrated fer a BESS under the power conditioning and processing schemes of energy supply mode and energy storage mode, and compared with a conventional three-phase hard switching PWM bi-directional converter for a BESS. The effectiveness of the three-phase ZVS PWM hi-directional converter with QRDCL is proven via the simulation analysis.

This paper proposes an improved Maximum Power Point Tracking method and design methods of unmanned solar vehicle system by parts of hardware, unmanned driving control and power conversion. The hardware design is offered on the weight reduction and structural reliability by using structural analysis software. The technique of curve fitting is applied to unmanned control system due to minimizing the vehicle's behavior. Furthermore, lateral controller applying actuator dynamics is robust enough to prevent performance degradation by measurement noise regarding position and heading angle. The power conversion system contains battery charger system and tapped-inductor boost converter. In the battery charger system, variable step-size MPPT is conducted for quick response of maximum power point tracking. The validity of the proposed algorithm are verified by simulations and experiments.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles(HEVs) have seriously come into prevalence recently as car manufacturers and consumers have become more aware of the environmental and economic problems of conventional vehicles. For the alternative power-train and battery cooling systems in HEVs, an effective thermal management system is required, and many automakers are interested in using Brushless DC(BLDC) motors for cooling fans for the overall traction unit's performance and energy saving capability. This paper presents the development status of BLDC motors as major parts of the power-train, i.e. the engine cooling and battery cooling fans of HEVs. A design that uses BLDC motors for the power-train and each battery cooling fan, is successfully implemented through using electro-magnetic analysis, and prototype BLDC motors are examined. As experimental results, the BLDC motors achieved an efficiency of 85% as engine cooling fans and 72% as a battery thermal management fan motor. The electric cogging noise is significantly reduced by changing the skew of the slot pitch angle and optimizing the magnetic shape.
