  • A superconductor flywheel energy storage system (SFES) is an electro-mechanical battery which transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy for storage, and vice versa. Many aspects of the quasi-static behavior of flywheel rotors still need to be studied closely, and the rotors require a stable and highly efficient supporting system such as high temperature superconductor (HTS) bearings, which offer dynamic stability without the use of active control. Quasi-static properties of HTS bearings in the radial direction provide data to solve problems which may occur in a running system. Since stiffness in countering rotor vibration is the main parameter for designing an HTS bearing system, we investigated the quasi-static properties of the magnetic force between permanent magnets(PMs) and HTS bulks in the radial direction. We measured radial stiffness, and discovered that bearing stiffness varied greatly depending on the number of active HTS bulks. This is valuable data for predicting the change in stiffness during partial HTS bearing failure. The quasi-static test results are used for optimal design and performance prediction for the 100 kWh class superconductor bearing.

  • In this study reports experiments were conducted to determine the quality of weld beads of different materials, Al and Cu. Among the lasers used to make battery cells for electric vehicles, non-destructive testing was performed using deep learning to determine the quality of beads welded with the ARM laser. Deep learning was performed using AlexNet algorithm with a convolutional neural network structure. The results of quality identification were divided into good and bad, and the result value was derived that all the results were in agreement with 94% or more. Overall, the best welding quality was obtained in the experiment for the fixed ring beam output/variable center beam output, in the case of the fixed beam (ring beam) 500W and variable beam (center beam) 1,050W; weld bead failure was seldom observed. The tensile force test to confirm the reliability of welding reported an average tensile force of 2.5kgf/mm or more in all sections.

  • Korea Utility Helicopter(KUH) is a project to replace the aging helicopter presently being operated by the military with a domestic helicopter. The auxiliary power unit is a device that supplies emergency power to the system by an alternator installed when the main generator fails and the start motor converts the electrical energy of the battery into mechanical rotational energy to rotate the auxiliary power unit engine. With continuing power and operation, defects of the starting motor were found and improvements were carried out to solve it. In the failure mode analysis, the causes of possible defects were classified into 5 categories. Analysis of the 5 factors revealed that the main cause of defects is mechanical wear, which was found to be related to spring pressure. 250 tests were conducted through the theoretically determined pressure and regression analysis was performed with 4 sampling. The results showed that pressure was related to wear rate. In conclusion, early wear and breakage due to wear can be controlled through spring force and test showed the prediction of wear and the validity of the result were confirmed.
