DTS 기반 온도 감시 및 온도 조건에서의 배터리 셀 열화 특성 분석 (DTS-based Temperature Monitoring and Analysis of Battery Cell Deterioration Characteristics by Temperature Condition)

  • As ESS safety issues increase recently, there is a need to more precisely monitor the temperature of the ESS. In this paper, DTS technology for temperature monitoring of ESS batteries is introduced and the temperature measurement principle is explained. The temperature of the battery module is measured using the DTS system, and the thermal deviation between battery cells inside the battery module is analyzed. In order to analyze how thermal imbalance affects the charging and discharging performance of the battery, an accelerated degradation test was conducted. Cycle life characteristics analysis, battery surface temperature change, and AC impedance characteristics were conducted to analyze how the performance of battery cells differs according to temperature conditions.

Effect of Temperature on the Deterioration of Graphite-Based Negative Electrodes during the Prolonged Cycling of Li-ion Batteries

  • In this paper, we report the effects of temperature on the deterioration of graphite-based negative electrodes during the longterm cycling of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). After cycling 75 Ah pouch-type LIB full cells at temperatures of 45℃ (45-Cell) and 25℃ (25-Cell) until their end of life, we expected to observe changes in the negative electrode according to the temperature. The thickness of the negative electrode of the cell was greater after cycling; that of the electrode of 45-Cell (144 ㎛) was greater than that of the electrode of 25-Cell (109 ㎛). Cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy analysis confirmed that by-products caused this increase in the thickness of the negative electrode. The by-products that formed on the surface of the negative electrode during cycling increased the surface resistance and decreased the electrical conductivity. Voltage profiles showed that the negative electrode of 25-Cell exhibited an 84.7% retention of the initial capacity, whereas that of 45-Cell showed only a 70.3% retention. The results of this study are expected to be relevant to future analyses of the deterioration characteristics of the negative electrode and battery deterioration mechanisms, and are also expected to provide basic data for advanced battery design.

Clarification the Current Situation of Deterioration and Its Causes of Modernization Heritage Built with Bricks in Japan: A Case Study of Long-Term Monitoring Investigation at Sarushima Battery, Yokosuka, Japan

  • A long-term monitoring investigation at Sarushima Battery (Kanagawa, Japan), which is one of the modernization heritages was conducted from 2017.06 to 2020.12. The investigation of the temperature and relative humidity (RH), measurement of the amount of brick decay, and X-ray diffraction analysis of the brick decay was conducted to understand in detail the environment in which the historical brick structure, the state of deterioration, identify the factors of deterioration. Furthermore, it was discussed whether the suitability of these investigation methods for assessing the status, identifying the level of deterioration and the factors that led to deterioration at the historical brick heritages. It was found that the brick deterioration at the site progressed especially in two periods: in April, and from June to August. These periods coincided with the period when the RH inside the structure decreased, and the Toyo-gumi bricks were in the process of absorbing moisture. Several different types of salts were detected in brick decay, especially thenardite, which is considered highly hazardous and destructive during periods when the amount of brick decay increased. Therefore, the RH in the structure and the salts present in the bricks were identified as one of the factors in the deterioration of the bricks at the site. The methods used in this study are appropriate as the initial survey methods for investigating the current conditions and identifying the causes of deterioration because it is possible to understand the environment within the modernization heritages, grasp the details of deterioration progression, and identify the characteristics of deterioration progression and its factors through long-term investigation using the simple methods.

톤버스트 응답 신호의 스펙트럼 추정에 의한 배터리의 SoC 측정에 관한 연구 (A Study on SoC Measurement of Battery by Spectrum Estimation of Tone Burst Response Signal)

  • 배터리의 열화는 SoC 및 SoH의 변화에 따라 결정된다. 배터리의 열화를 판정하기 위해 전달 함수에 의한 배터리 SoC를 측정 하는 방법을 연구 하였다. 배터리의 SoC는 DC 저항이 검출되는 1Hz 대역에서 가장 크게 변화 한다. 하지만 관측하기 협소한 대역이기 때문에 톤버스트 신호를 입력신호로 사용하여 배터리의 주파수 응답대역을 대역을 1kHz로 이동 시켰다. 신호의 주파수 영역 특성을 관측을 위해 Welch스펙트럼 추정 방법을 사용하였다. 스펙트럼 추정 결과 배터리의 응답 신호는 SoC가 40%, 60%, 80% 일 때 각각 1dB의 차이를 갖는 것을 확인 하였으며, 이를 통해 새로운 배터리 SoC의 측정 방식을 제안 하였다.

  • As the number of electric vehicles (EV) increases, there is an increasing interest in the post-vehicle application of the EV batteries. For the second use application of EV batteries, the state of health (SOH) at the end of automotive service has to be evaluated differently from the automotive perspective. It will be helpful to consider the driving conditions of EVs in understanding the performance deterioration trend of the battery. In this paper, we acquired the battery status information in real time during driving and compared the characteristics by the driving routes. The SOH from the BMS can be rescaled to percentage ratio to give a more general idea about the performance degradation.

Enhancement of Quick-Charge Performance by Fluoroethylene Carbonate additive from the Mitigation of Electrode Fatigue During Normal C-rate Cycling

  • The quick-charging performance of SiO electrodes is evaluated with a focus on solid electrolyte interphase (SEI)-reinforcing effects. The study reveals that the incorporation of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) into the SiO electrode significantly reduced the electrode fatigue, which is from the the viscoelastic properties of the FEC-derived SEI film. The impact of FEC is attributed to its ability to minimize the mechanical failure of the electrode caused by additional electrolyte decomposition. This beneficial outcome arises from volumetric stain-tolerant characteristics of the FEC-derived SEI film, which limited exposure of the bare SiO surface during 0.5 C-rate cycling. Notably, FEC greatly improves Li deposition during quick-charge cycles following aging at 0.5 C-rate cycling due to its ability to maintain a strong electrical connection between active materials and the current collector, even after extended cycling. Given these findings, we assert that mitigating SEI layer deterioration, which compromises the electrode structure, is vital. Hence, enhancing the interfacial attributes of the SiO electrode becomes crucial for maintaining kinetic efficiency of battery system.

메탄 플라즈마 분해에 의해 제조된 카본블랙 도전재의 전기화학적 특성에 대한 연구 (An Electrochemical Study on the Carbon Black Conductor Prepared by Plasma Pyrolysis of Methane)

  • 메탄의 플라즈마 열분해 방법에 의해 제조된 카본블랙을 $2\times10^{-2}torr$진공상태에서 $800,\;1300,\;2100^{\circ}C$의 온도로 열처리하여 원시료를 포함하여 물리적$\cdot$화학적 특성이 다른 4개의 시료를 준비하였다. 이 시료들을 리튬이차전지 양극 활물질인 $LiCoO_2$의 도전재로 사용하여 $Li/LiCoO_2$ 반쪽전지를 구성하고 변화된 도전재의 특성에 따른 셀의 전기화학적 특성 차이를 조사하였다 시료를 열처리하였을 때 표면화학그룹이 제거되고 전도도가 높아지면서 도전재로 사용하였을 때 사이클 특성 및 초기 방전용량이 향상되었다. 그러나, $2100^{\circ}C$에서 열처리한 시료를 도전재로 사용한 경우에는 사이클 특성 및 rate capability가 저하되는 것으로 나타났다. 이것은 플라즈마 블랙의 열처리에 의한 구조 변화에 따른 전극 내 분산 특성의 변화가 전도도 특성과 복합적으로 작용하여 제작한 셀의 전기화학적 특성에 영향을 미치기 때문으로 사료된다 열처리 온도가 높아질수록 카본블랙 표면의 관능기가 제거되면서 플라즈마 블랙의 전도도가 증가하였으나, 흑연화의 진행으로 나타난 agglomeration의 증가가 전극 내 분산 특성을 저하시키는 것으로 사료된다 그 결과 $800^{\circ}C$에서 열처리한 시료의 사이클 특성이 가장 우수하였다.

리튬 함량 및 단위 셀 압력이 열전지용 리튬 음극의 방전 성능에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Lithium Contents and Applied Pressure on Discharge Characteristics of Single Cell with Lithium Anode for Thermal Batteries)

  • Lithium anodes (13, 15, 17, and 20 wt% Li) were fabricated by mixing molten lithium and iron powder, which was used as a binder to hold the molten lithium, at about $500^{\circ}C$ (discharge temp.). In this study, the effect of applied pressure and lithium content on the discharge properties of a thermal battery's single cell was investigated. A single cell using a Li anode with a lithium content of less than 15 wt% presented reliable performance without any abrupt voltage drop resulting from molten lithium leakage under an applied pressure of less than $6kgf/cm^2$. Furthermore, it was confirmed that even when the solid electrolyte is thinner, the Li anode of the single cell normally discharges well without a deterioration in performance. The Li anode of the single cell presented a significantly improved open-circuit voltage of 2.06 V, compared to that of a Li-Si anode (1.93 V). The cut-off voltage and specific capacity were 1.83 V and $1,380As\;g^{-1}$ (Li anode), and 1.72 V and $1,364As\;g^{-1}$ (Li-Si anode). Additionally, the Li anode exhibited a stable and flat discharge curve until 1.83 V because of the absence of phase change phenomena of Li metal and a subsequent rapid voltage drop below 1.83 V due to the complete depletion of Li at the end state of discharge. On the other hand, the voltage of the Li-Si anode cell decreased in steps, $1.93V{\rightarrow}1.72V(Li_{13}Si_4{\rightarrow}Li_7Si_3){\rightarrow}1.65V(Li_7Si_3{\rightarrow}Li_{12}Si_7)$, according to the Li-Si phase changes during the discharge reaction. The energy density of the Li anode cell was $807.1Wh\;l^{-1}$, which was about 50% higher than that of the Li-Si cell ($522.2Wh\;l^{-1}$).

고안정성 리튬이온전지 양극활물질용 Ti 치환형 LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 연구 (Study on Ti-doped LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 Cathode Materials for High Stability Lithium Ion Batteries)

  • 기존 LiCoO2의 고전압 사용의 제약에 따른 용량적 한계와 코발트 원료의 높은 가격을 해결하기 위하여 high-Nickel에 대한 개발이 활발히 진행되고 있지만 Ni 함량의 증가에 따른 구조적 안정성의 저하에 의한 전지 특성의 저하는 상용화를 지연시키는 중요한 원인이 되고 있다. 이에 Ni-rich 삼성분계 양극소재 LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2의 고안정성을 높이고자 전구체에 균일한 이종원소 Ti를 치환을 위해서 나노크기의 TiO2 서스펜젼 형태 소스를 사용하여 전구체 Ni0.6Co0.2Mn0.2-x(OH)2/xTiO2를 제조하였다. Li2CO3와 혼합하고, 열처리 후 양극활물질 LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2-xTixO2 합성하여 Ti 함량에 따른 물리적 특성을 비교하였다. Field Emission Scanning electron Microscope(FE-SEM) 및 Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) mapping 분석을 통해 Ti 치환된 구형의 전구체와 입자 크기 측정을 통해 균일한 입자크기를 가지는 양극 활물질 제조를 확인하였고, 내부치밀도와 강도가 증가함을 확인 하고, X-ray Diffractometry (XRD) 구조 분석과 Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) 정량분석을 통해 Ti 치환된 양극활물질 제조 및 고온, 고전압에서 충·방전을 지속하더라도 효과적으로 용량이 유지됨을 확인하였다.
