The purpose of this study was to develop prevention and educational programs for battered women. The first stage was to assess battered women's health status and health needs. The second stage was to develop prevention and educational programs to improve battered women's health. A survey research design was used to gather data from June-November 1999 by the counselor. Research sample was recruited from shelter and women's counseling centers in Seoul, Inchon, Chooncheon, Taejeon, and Jeoju. Trained counselors contacted 218 women, who agreed verbally to participate in the study. The researcher did a literature review and developed the tool used. We did ten pretests and three counselors checked the tool for content validity. The reliability and validity of the instrument were acceptable. The second stage of the research consisted of lay-professional groups discussing the abuse problems and possible solutions. Each group had five professionals (counsellor, nurse, minister, psychiatrist, social worker) and five women who have experienced battering from her husband in community. Result of the survey and two(lay persons and professionals) group discussions showed that victims need more assessment of physical, mental and spiritual needs. Victims were beaten more often during their pregnancies than at other times. Various kind of strategy were frequently utilized, but still the number of women abused and suicides committed increased. Both studies showed that the women experienced severe beating, that they felt powerless, that they need to understand that society abuser characteristics, that they lack a protection support system and that society lacks would an understanding of battered women. Based on the result of both studies, we developed model for prevention and education of battered women. This educational program will increase women s power to solve the abuse problems. The ultimate goal of the program is to develop a one-stop center to give wholistic approach care to women in abuse situations.
The recent domestic violence research has emphasized an integrated approach to wife battering and child abuse to overcome separated understanding and problem-solving alternatives of the two phenomena in the past. This phenomenological study is designed to understand struggles and dilemmas of battered women and their children related to their surviving and coping with domestic violence in a mother-child relationship. In-depth interviews were conducted with ten battered women who have children and reside in shelters in Seoul and Anyang, and were analyzed by Atlas.ti(a qualitative software program) to maximize the efficiency of data analysis. Domestic violence can be transformed into and integrated with child abuse anytime, so battered women and their children share their crises and challenges related to motherliness and filial love. However, the mutual, existential meaning embedded in the mother-child relationship can be the most important sources to mobilize their life energy and resilience in their copping efforts. The social work interventions for battered women and their children should be integrated with a premise of deep understanding of the complex realities of domestic violence victims.

Method: The data were collected from 555 women who were stratified samples according to 15,000:1 from a target population in Korea from November 18, 2004 to February 18, 2005. The data was analysed using the SPSS program. Results: Predictors of anxiety were self esteem, stress, state anger, social support, trait anger, negotiation, and psychological violence. These variables explained 55.8% of anxiety. Predictors of PTSD were self esteem, state anger, trait anger, psychological violence, stress, and anger-in. These variables explained 43.2% of PTSD. Conclusion: It is considered that the importance of separating the effects of the different types of violence when taking into account its effects on women's mental health. To promote women's mental health, it is needed to develop self esteem improvement programs, and anger and stress management programs.
This qualitative study explores social workers' phenomenological experiences with battered women, including their struggles and needs for building and maintaining an empathic identification with their battered women clients. Twelve interviews were conducted with social workers who have provided services in the domestic violence field over the last two years. They identified their clients prejudices and unfamiliarity with counseling and social work profession in Korea as related to battered women clients' initial resistance to social workers' empathic engagement. The nature of victimization between intimate partners (i.e., emotional bounds, continuing risks of victimization) requires workers' enormous energy to maintain their need for an empathic identification with their clients. Social workers emphasized the importance of clinical supervision and supportive networks that enable them to maintain their professional energy and commitment as an empathic helper.

This study analyzed the state of battered women who drink at a dangerously high level and the factors that influence their hazardous drinking in order to promote their safety and their healthy adjustments. The researchers utilized the data from "Analysis of the Effectiveness of Intimate Partner Violence Offenders Correction and Treatment Program" funded by Ministry of Gender Equality, and thereby, sampled 124 battered women for interview over phone. The results of applying the WHO's standard for hazardous drinking based on frequency and quantity calculations showed that 15.7% of survey participants were classified as hazardous drinkers, either currently experiencing or having the risk of experiencing problems related to drinking. The result of carrying out a logistic regression analysis to identify the factors that influence hazardous drinking showed that household income and self-blame were factors that exerted statistically significant influence. Based on these results, clinical and practical intervention plans for helping battered women who drink hazardously were discussed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate current circumstances of violence against wives, and to identify the wife's opinion of the spouse's punishment in domestic violence cases. Method: The subjects were 216 married women in G province. Data was gathered from November 22 to December 6, 2004. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, and the $x^2$-test using SPSS/Win 10.0 program. Results: About thirty six percent of the subjects had experience with domestic violence. There was a high prevalence of psychological aggression(68%), sexual coercion (36%), physical assault(31%), and injury(19%). The subjects experiencing domestic violence had a higher positive attitude towards the spouse's punishment than subjects not experiencing domestic violence. The more severe the domestic violence was, the more the battered women's positive attitude for criminal action increased. Conclusion: An educational program and public relations will increase women's empowerment to solve domestic violence. A more cooperative and integrative program for prevention and an intervention system against domestic violence should be developed for women in battered situations.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of attachment injury and stsit-trait anxiety on marital adjustment of battered women. The participants were total 220 battered women who have experiences with violence from their spouse. Data were collected from March 20 to May 6 in 2014 from five shelters for battered women, seven counseling centers, and three shelters run by various religion. SPSS 18.0 was used for data analysis and descriptive statistics, ANOVA test, Scheffe's test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression were done. As study results, attachment injury, state and trait anxiety showed significant negative correlation. Marriage status, number of children, duration of violence, attachment injury, state anxiety, and trait anxiety were the significant variables to explain marital adjustment. The explanation power was 60.0%. This study results will be use to develop intervention program for enhancement of marital adjustment whereas to decrease attachment injury and state-trait anxiety.
In this study, the effectiveness of integrated group program for battered women in the shelters carried out and the program's effectiveness concentrating on the depression is evaluated. The integrated group program was developed based on the National Family Violence Survey and other studies about battered women's characteristics. The major outcomes of the study are following. First, depression score of the test group(N=10) in comparison with the comparison group(N=18) decrease with statistical significance. Second, among the sub-symptoms of depression, the symptoms of affective, cognitive, and behavioral depression significantly decrease. These findings show that an integrated program is needed to improve battered women's mental health; it includes not only a mental health intervention but many other services such as family violence education, communication training, social support networking, economic independence improvement and child rearing.
This research utilized the Grounded Theory and Giorgi's phenomenological research method to analyze the experience of battered women who are maintaining a non-violent marriage relationship. Due to the low accessibility of subjects and the distinctiveness of the topic, I have selected 4 participants and conducted in-depth interviews. As for data analysis results, there were 5 superior component elements and 19 inferior component elements for the experience of maintaining a non-violent marriage relationship and these appeared according to time. Thus, it can be analyzed as follows: 'the vicious cycle stage of violence: caught in a trap,' 'stage of breakaway from vicious violence cycle: making the self-rescue measures,' 'entry to a new track: retrieval of autonomy,' 'stage of forming a non-violence track: preventing the recurrence of the violence,' 'stage of maintaining non-violent track: conversion to non-violent relationship.' This research result will be useful in seeking an effective social welfare intervention plan for successful non-violent relationship in order to help 50% of the battered women from family violence who wish to maintain marriage.
By reviewing relatively recent theory of coercive control, which considers gender as a key concept to conceptualize domestic violence, this article explores battered women's experiences with police responses and institutional law enforcement. Using data and interviews from Korea Women's Hotline, this article analyzes the effects of state intervention which fails to support battered women and sends a message to the community that domestic violence is not such a serious crime. Specifically, this study found some problematic responses and attitudes of police and legal system: first, police is equating domestic violence with physical attacks or serious harms. Second, police and law enforcement personnel blame victims based on her gender performance or gender roles. Third, by individualizing the problem of domestic violence, state intervention ignores important structural factors that cause and perpetuate it. Finally, police and the justice system disempower and discourage battered women by exacerbating victim's fears and risks. Viewing domestic violence as a liberty crime, this study concludes that enhanced understanding of the nature of domestic violence only can contribute to solving the problem and protecting women's human rights.
