$Al_2O_3-TiO_2$ composite oxide adsorbents which could be applied in high-temperature water were prepared by hydrolysis of aluminum and titanium alkoxide. The prepared adsorbents were calcined at $600{\sim}1400^{\circ}C$ and in order to investigate the various properties - the transition of crystals, thermal properties, and specific surface area, X-ray diffractometry, thermal analysis, FT-IR, SEM and BET method were employed. And the $Co^{2+}$ adsorption characteristics of these adsorbents in high-temperature water were investigated by batch adsorption experiment in a stirred autoclave. Since the adsorption of $Co^{2+}$ on the $Al_2O_3-TiO_2$ adsorbents was irreversible endothermic in the temperature range of $150{\sim}250^{\circ}C$, the standard enthalpy changes of 26, 43, and 80 mol% of $TiO_2$ on $Al_2O_3$ were in the range of $16.5{\sim}26.0kJ{\cdot}mol^{-1}$. The adsorbent of 26 mol% of $TiO_2$ on $Al_2O_3$ which was calcined at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours showed the adsorption amount of $0.1674meq{\cdot}g^{-1}$ in the high temperature water at $250^{\circ}C$.
Allura Red (AR) is a water-soluble harmful tar-based food colorant (FD & C Red 40). Batch adsorption studies were performed for the removal of AR using bituminous coal based granular activated carbon as adsorbent by varying the operation parameters such as adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Experimental equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms. The equilibrium process was described well by Freundlich isotherm. From determined separation factor ($R_L$), adsorption of AR by granular activated carbon could be employed as effective treatment method. Temkin parameter, B was determined to 1.62~3.288 J/mol indicating a physical adsorption process. By estimation of adsorption rate experimental data, the value of intraparticle diffusion rate constant ($k_m$) increased with the increasing adsorption temperature. The adsorption process were found to confirm to the pseudo second order model with good correlation. Thermodynamic parameters like change of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature adsorption in the temperature range of 298~318 K. The negative Gibbs free energy change (${\Delta}G$ = -2.16~-6.55 kJ/mol) and the positive enthalpy change (${\Delta}H$ = + 23.29 kJ/mol) indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption process, respectively.
A number of epidemiological studies have identified human papillomavirus (HPV) types 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 10, 27, 57, and 65 in cutaneous common warts. However, identification of the HPV subtype by conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is time consuming with its multi-step laboratory process. In this study, we aim to develop a specific one-step multiplex polymerase chain reaction method which capably identifies six different HPV genotypes related to common warts. By HPV DNA sequence analysis, 6 pairs of specific primers were designed from the intergenic regions of genes L1 to E6, and from genes E2 to L2. DNA sequence analysis with the L1 gene sequence of the sample was performed to measure the specificity of multiplex PCR. HPV-1, -2, -3, -4, -27, and -57 were identified without cross amplification in 109 out of 129 samples. The sensitivity and specificity of our set of primers in detecting HPV were 85% and 99.5%, respectively. For the 20 samples where HPV type was not identifiable by our batch of primer sets, multiplex PCR with an additional set of HPV primers was done, where 7 were found positive for HPV-7 or -65. Our results demonstrate that the newly designed multiplex PCR can rapidly detect the specific HPV subtype involved in common warts with high accuracy.
An attempt was made on the development of a commercial scale storage method of garlic by irradiation. Irradiated garlics with 50, 100 and 150 Gy were stored at natural low temperature storage room $(12{\pm}6^{\circ}C,{\;}75-85%{\;}RH)$ and the physicochemical properties during the 10 months storage were investigated. The unirradiated garlic was mostly sprouted after 8 months storage, whereas the sprouting of all irradiated groups was completely inhibited until 10 months storage, The rotting rate and weigh loss of garlic after 10 months storage were reduced by 25 to 54% at 100 Gy irradiation compared with those of an unirradiated group. The moisture content remained relatively constant during the whole storage period. The total sugar content was increased with storage period. Ascorbic acid content was also decreased until 8 months storage but its content was rapidly increased along with sprouting. Garlic was marketable after 10 months storage by 100 Gy irradiation combined with natural low temperature.
Zerovalent iron (ZVI) has been widely used in the removal of environmental contaminants from water. The objective of this research was to assess the efficiency of ZVI for immobilization of As (V) in the contaminated water under various chemical conditions. Batch-type experiments showed that the immobilization process followed a first-order kinetic model. Rate constant (k) of the reaction increased consistently and proportionally as increasing ZVI concentrations from 1% (0.158 $hr^{-1}$) to 3% (0.342 $hr^{-1}$), and temperatures from $15^{\circ}C$ (0.117 $hr^{-1}$) to $35^{\circ}C$ (0.246 $hr^{-1}$), respectively. Whereas the rate constant decreased as increasing As (V) concentrations from 1 mg $\Gamma^{-1}$ (0.284 $hr^{-1}$) to 3 mg $\Gamma^{-1}$ (0.153 $hr^{-1}$), and the initial pH from 3 (0.393 $hr^{-1}$) to 9 (0.067 $hr^{-1}$), respectively. Results demonstrated that As (V) in an aqueous solution was rapidly immobilized by ZVI treatments. Zerovalent iron was fast method for remediation of As (V) contaminated water.
In the Kimchi manufacturing industry that has recently been on its greatest growth, the rinsing process for salt-pickled Chinese cabbage in a brining step generates a vast amount of rinsing wastewater containing salts, colloids, and organics released from the raw material. In this study, the experimental method was developed to optimize the rinsing water consumption and thus to minimize the rinsing wastewater generation. The continuous counter-current rinsing basin in the actual plant was simulated through the lab-scale three batch-wise rinsing tanks. Rinsing efficiencies for the brined cabbage from the same brining tank were almost in the same level, whereas those varied substantially from source to source in the raw Chinese cabbage provided. When rinsing water used were decreased from 3.3 L/head to 2.7 L/head, no significant change was observed with respect to COD, turbidity, conductivity, $Na^+$, and $Cl^-$ concentrations in the extracted solution of the rinsed cabbage. However, the quality of the extracted solution was badly deteriorated as the amount of rinsing water used dropped down to below 2.7 L/head. The reduction of rinsing water up to 18% was proved to be possible without any negative effect on the quality of the product, Kimchi.
This study presents the application of satellite laser ranging (SLR) to orbit determination (OD) of high-Earth-orbit (HEO) satellites. Two HEO satellites are considered: the Quasi-Zenith Satellite-1 (QZS-1), a Japanese elliptical-inclinedgeosynchronous-orbit (EIGSO) satellite, and the Compass-G1, a Chinese geostationary-orbit (GEO) satellite. One week of normal point (NP) data were collected for each satellite to perform the OD based on the batch least-square process. Five SLR tracking stations successfully obtained 374 NPs for QZS-1 in eight days, whereas only two ground tracking stations could track Compass-G1, yielding 68 NPs in ten days. Two types of station bias estimation and a station data weighting strategy were utilized for the OD of QZS-1. The post-fit root-mean-square (RMS) residuals of the two week-long arcs were 11.98 cm and 10.77 cm when estimating the biases once in an arc (MBIAS). These residuals were decreased significantly to 2.40 cm and 3.60 cm by estimating the biases every pass (PBIAS). Then, the resultant OD precision was evaluated by the orbit overlap method, yielding three-dimensional errors of 55.013 m with MBIAS and 1.962 m with PBIAS for the overlap period of six days. For the OD of Compass-G1, no station weighting strategy was applied, and only MBIAS was utilized due to the lack of NPs. The post-fit RMS residuals of OD were 8.81 cm and 12.00 cm with 49 NPs and 47 NPs, respectively, and the corresponding threedimensional orbit overlap error for four days was 160.564 m. These results indicate that the amount of SLR tracking data is critical for obtaining precise OD of HEO satellites using SLR because additional parameters, such as station bias, are available for estimation with sufficient tracking data. Furthermore, the stand-alone SLR-based orbit solution is consistently attainable for HEO satellites if a target satellite is continuously trackable for a specific period.

Domestic treatment facilities for acid mine drainage (AMD) mostly used a passive treatment process. But some passive treatment facility discharged high manganese concentrations because it is required high pH (>9) for abiotic oxidation of Mn(II) to Mn(IV). This study was focused on the feasibility of biological manganese treatment using the manganese-oxidizing bacteria (Pseudomonas sp. MN5) from AMD and economical application method of it. To investigate the various conditions of water quality the most part of the experiments were based on batch test. And result of it showed that maximum manganese oxidation rate were $10.4mg/L{\cdot}h$ at the pH7. We also performed small column tests in which MOB were attached to the functional polyurethane (FPU) media containing alkaline chemicals. Manganese concentration decreased 42 mg/L to below 6 mg/L. But anaerobic condition formed by excessive bacterial respiration in column resulted in increasing effluent manganese concentration.

The single-crystal structure of |$Ca_{35.5}$|[$Si_{121}Al_{71}O_{384}$]-FAU, $Ca_{35.5}Si_{121}Al_{71}O_{384}$ per unit cell, a = 24.9020(10) $\AA$, dehydrated at 673 K and 2 ${\times}\;10^{-6}$Torr, has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques in the cubic space group Fd$\overline{3}$m at 294 K. The large single crystals of zeolite Y (Si/Al = 1.70) were synthesized up to diameters of ${\mu}m\;and\;Ca^{2+}$-exchanged zeolite Y were prepared by ion exchange in a batch method of 0.05 M aqueous Ca($NO_3)_2$ for 4 hrs at 294 K. The structure was refined using all intensities to the final error indices (using only the 971 reflections for which $F_o\;>\;4{\sigma}(F_o))\;R_1$ = 0.038 (based on F) and $R_2$ = 0.172 (based on $F^2$). About 35.5 $Ca^{2+}$ ions per unit cell are found at an unusually large number of crystallographically distinct positions, four. Nearly filling site I (at the centers of the double 6-rings), 14.5 octahedrally coordinated $Ca^{2+}$ ions (Ca-O = 2.4194(24) $\AA$ and O-Ca-O = 87.00(8) and 93.00($8^o$) are found per unit cell. One $Ca^{2+}$ ion per unit cell is located at site II’ in the sodalite cavity and extends 0.50 $\AA$ into the sodalite cavity from its 3-oxygen plane (Ca-O = 2.324(13) $\AA$ and O-Ca-O = 115.5(10)o). The remaining twenty $Ca^{2+}$ ions are found at two nonequivalent sites II (in the supercages) with occupancies of 10 and 10 ions, respectively. Each of these $Ca^{2+}$ ions coordinates to three framework oxygens, either at 2.283(3) or 2.333(5) $\AA$, respectively, and extends either 0.24 or 0.54 $\AA$, respectively, into the supercage from the three oxygens to which it is bound. In this crystal, site I is the most populated; sites II’ and II are only sparsely occupied.$Ca^{2+}$+ appears to fit the octahedral site I best. No cations are found at sites III or III’, which are clearly less favorable for $Ca^{2+}$ ions in dehydrated zeolite Y.
Even though concrete is the most important material for building structures, its intrinsic gray color degrades urban esthetics. In order to improve this problem, coloring methods of mixing pigment in concrete batch and painting the surface of concrete surface have been tried. However, applications of the coloring methods in construction field are difficult due to high cost and low durability. Recently, acid stain agent is emerging as a new coloring method for concrete. It is able to apply a remarkably thin colored layer on a concrete surface from chemical reaction between acid and alkaline solutions. This study has examined the changes and variations of the surface layer of mortar specimen from chemical reaction of acid stained agents. The colors were changed into natural irregular stains according to aging. After the staining, no shape change was found from visible inspections. Microstructure of the colored surface applied with acid stained agent was much rougher than that of original mortar. When the colored layer was compared to original surface, crystals of hydrate such as $Ca(OH)_2$ and C-S-H gel were observed. Surface hardness was same or slightly higher in the colored layer. The value of pH was reduced by approximately 10%, weight contents of elements such as Ca, Si, and Al were low. In the chemical composition of the colored layer, the non-cement based elements of Mn, Cr, and Cu increased. Also, Fe and alkali elements of K and Na increased.
