  • The decision of design flood in river basins is very important in the aspect of flood control. The design flood of rivers was estimated according to the size and importance of basins. As the damage of floods increases more and more and the importance of defense against floods increases further, the presumption of design flood can be very important. Especially, what influences most greatly flood is rainfall. However, in spite of equal rainfall, the estimated flood differ according to the features of basins. The fact that the features of basins influence greatly the estimation of flood was confirmed by the preceding research results and experiences. However, although many rivers have their own basin features, the research on how these basin features are related to the estimation of design flood, is not yet sufficient. The purpose of this study is to identify how the design flood estimated previously by river arrangement basic plan is correlated with topography factors, and so investigate the correlation between basin topography factors and design flood in order to provide the additional information for the unmeasured basins or the middle/small river basins where their river plan is not established.

  • The main objective of this study is to simulate design flood discharge of the Sungjoo basin. GIS and HEC-HMS were used in this study. GIS technique can extract various hydrological factors from D.E.M(Digital Elevation Model) and the parameters extracted from each watershed were applied to the HEC-HMS. As a result of this study, GIS technique is useful to tile extraction of watershed characteristics factors and HEC-HMS is successful in tile simulation of design flood discharge.

  • The Sumjin Reservoir watershed was simulated by the SSARR model. In order to calibrate the parameters of SSARR model, watershed was divided into three sub-basins with the basin characteristics and the observed runoff datum at estuary of dam were used. As the Results of study, there was not much of difference between the observed runoff and the simulated runoff.

  • It needs to extract the accurate topological characteristics and hydrological parameters of watershed in order to manage water resource efficiently. But, these data are processed yet by manual wok and simple operation in hydrologic fields. In this paper, we presented algorithm that could extract topological characteristics and hydrological parameters over watershed using GSIS and it gives the saving of data processing tin and the confidency of data. We presented coupling method between GSIS and hydrologic model by using extracted parameters into the input parameter of HEC-HMS hydrologic model. The extraction procedure of topological characteristics and hydrological parameters is as below. First, watershed and stream are extracted by DEM and curve unmber is extracted throughout the overlay of landuse map and soil map. Also, we extracted surface parameters like the length of the longest flow path and the slope of the longest flow path by Grid computation into watershed and stream. And we gave the method that could extract hydrologic parameters like Muskingum K and sub-basin lag tin by executing computation into surface parameters and average Sn curve number being extracted.

  • This study investigates the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics and relationships among water quality parameters, which based on 6 years' data(from 1989 to 1994) measured at 16 stations on Jinhae Bay. The results of these analysis, monthly variations range between surface and bottom layer of water quality had a tendency to increase and decrease, and appeared to be at the maximum value in August. The relationships between concentration of COD ana nutrients(DIN and DIP), which obtained by correlation analysis of water quality, were shown $85\%$ and $74\%$, respectively. Using the cluster analysis to develop the division of the sea basin by the dendrogram, before and after dredging of Masan bay and operating a sewage disposal plant, the variation characteristics of water quality of Jinhae Bay were discussed. Through it, we can see the serious pollution of northen sea basin of Jinhae Bay(B2) although dredging Masan bay and operating the sewage disposal plant. As the results, it doesn't appear the improvement effect of water quality in spite of carrying out the effort of water quality improvement.

  • A Synthetic unit hydrograph method was suggested for the representation of a direct runoff hydrograph with empirical geomorphologic laws and geomorphologic parameters by applying geomorphologic instantaneous unit hydrograph theory and Rossois results of application of GIUH theory to the Nash Model which is a linear reservoir model. The shape parameter m and scale parameter k can be derived by the Horton's empirical geomorphologic laws $R_A,R_B,R_L$ when ordered according to Strahler's ordering Scheme, main stream length and using the maximum velocity for the dynamic characteristics of a river basin, The derived response function was tested on some observed flood datas and showed promising. For the determination of the shape parameter m, eq. (16) was showed applying and m showed a good regression with the size of basin area.

  • The interest in hydrological modeling has increased significantly recently due to the necessity of watershed management, specifically in regards to lumped models, which are being prosperously utilized because of their relatively uncomplicated algorithms which require less simulation time. However, lumped models require empirical coefficients for hydrological analyses, which do not take into consideration the heterogeneity of site-specific characteristics. To overcome such obstacles, a distributed model was offered as an alternative and the number of researches related to watershed management and distributed models has been steadily increasing in the recent years. Thus, in this study, the feasibility of a grid-based rainfall-runoff model was reviewed using the flood runoff process in the Han River basin, including the ChungjuDam, HoengseongDam and SoyangDam watersheds. Hydrological parameters based on GIS/RS were extracted from basic GIS data such as DEM, land cover, soil map and rainfall depth. The accuracy of the runoff analysis for the model application was evaluated using EFF, NRMSE and QER. The calculation results showed that there was a good agreement with the observed data. Besides the ungauged spatial characteristics in the SoyangDam watershed, EFF showed a good result of 0.859.

  • The methods of development and application of an expert system are suggested to solve more efficiently the problems of water resources and quality induced by the rapid urbanization. Major parameters of the water quantity and quality of urban areas are selected their characteristics are presented by the sensitivity analysis. The rules to decide the parameters effectively are proposed based on these characteristics. the ESPE(Expert System for Parameter Estimation), an expert system based on the 'facts' and 'rules', is developed using the CLIPS 6.0 and applied to the basin of the An-Yang stream. The results of estimating t도 parameters of water quantity show a high applicability, but those of water quality imply the necessity of improving the present methods due to both the complexity of estimation processes and the lack of decision rules.

  • The correlation between hydrologic performance design parameters of small hydro power(SHP) sites and rainfall condition have been analyzed for major river systems. The model, which can predict flow duration characteristic of stream, was developed to estimate the inflow caused from rainfall. And another model to predict hydrologic performance for SHP plants is established. Based on the models developed in this study, the hydrologic performance characteristics for SHP sites have been analyzed. The results show that the hydrologic performance characteristics of SHP sites have some difference between the river systems. Especially, the specific design flowrate and specific output of SHP sites located on North Han river and Nakdong river systems have large difference compared with other river systems. It was found that the hydrologic performance design parameters such as specific design flowrate and specific output were affected by rainfall condition in basin area of SHP sites.

  • This study evaluated the effect of combined rainfall observation of using rain gauge and rain radar. The effect of combined observations is to be evaluated by considering the decrease of measurement error due to combined use of design orthogonal observation methods. As an example, this study evaluated the rain gauge network of the Keum river basin, and showed how the density of rain gauges could be decreased by combining the radar observation. This study applied the researches on sampling error by North and Nakamoto(1989), Yoo et al. (1996) and Yoo (1997), also the simple NFD model for representing the rainfall field. The model parameters were decided using the rainfall characteristics (correlation time and length) estimated using the data collected in the Keum River Basin by 28 rain gauges and the operation rule of radar was assumed arbitrarily. This study considered the rain gauge density criteria provided by WMO(1994) and the rain gauge density installed in the Keum river basin to decrease the rain gauge density under the condition of introducing the radar.
