Metacognition is defined to be 'thinking about thinking' and 'knowing what we know and what we don't know'. It was verified that the metacognitive abilities of high school students can be improved via instruction. The purpose of this article is to investigate a new method for activating the metacognitive abilities that play a key role in the Mathematical Problem Solving Process(MPSP). Hyunsung participated in the MPSP using Visual Basic Programming. He actively participated in the MPSP. There are sufficient evidences about activating the metacognitive abilities via the activity processes and interviews. In solving mathematical problems, he had basic metacognitive abilities in the stage of understanding mathematical problems; through the experiments, he further developed his metacognitive abilities and successfully transferred them to general mathematical problem solving.
When the game is used in mathematics loaming, students take pleasure of game in themselves and communicate through interaction with other students naturally. It is important because the game is activity for intellectual growth and social development. Also students have had affirmative attitude about mathematics by Emu. The communication in mathematics loaming helps that linking informal and intuitive thinking of students with abstract and basic mathematical language and that it also helps changing from the dependent situation to teacher to the self-directive teaming of students. The purpose of this thesis is to effect on extension of mathematical communication ability to the second grade of elementary school students by applying of computational-strategy games. It has conclusion as follows. Application of computational-strategy games had effected on extension of mathematical communication ability importantly. When students have mathematical communication through computational-strategy games, at the beginning, the words which students used was long, incorrect, and unnecessary words. But at the later, students became to use clear, correct concise words as they connect their routine language with mathematical symbol. Therefore we can make sure that mathematical communication ability of the second grade students' is extended by applying of computational-strategy games.
After entering an elementary school, in fact, a number of children regard mathematics as one of very difficult subjects because of its abstractiveness. This is caused by the fact that their basic thinking power is not yet formed or they can not understand the special quality of mathematics. So this article emphasizes the need to build up the higher logical thought and a basic mathematical concept at the lower grade elementary school stage in which the loaming activity on mathematics begins in earnest, that is, at the stage before having an experience on the calculating activity using numbers. But at present the lower grade elementary school students in our country do not understand the special quality of mathematics composed of a various symbolic system and lay stress upon mathematics learning attached to the calculative activity. In order to make the right mathematical concept of the lower grade elementary school, the basic knowledge and ability as follows is sure to be formed. 1) the foundational logical manipulation activity and knowledge 2) the using ability of the sign and symbolic system At the stage on which mathematics learning activity begins, it is a very important task to make the right concept of the abstractive math and nurse the capability for finding mathematical relations covered under the sign system through the continuos loaming activity on . Through the basic logical manipulation activity and the game activity of sign for lower grade elementary school students mentioned in this article, they can not only foster the higher level logical thinking power and the foundational calculative ability but also bring up the interest on the activity of establishing a new problem solving strategy.
Design class through team activities is increasing in engineering education. Team-based education has been known to improve students' creativity, problem solving ability, cooperative ability, self-directed learning ability, and communication ability. How to organize a team is an important issue that affects the performance of team activities as well as student satisfaction. However, previous studies have focused on the causal relationship between team formation and the team's performance. This paper deals with how to organize a balanced team in a real class. When the basic characteristic values of students are givens, the aim is to make the sum of the characteristic values as fair as possible for each team. We propose a mathematical team formation model and show how to apply it through case studies.
The aim of this study is to improve the basic learning ability of those who make poor progress in mathematics and to keep positive and active learning attitudes in class afterward by using problems whith both make them advance their basic learning ability and supplement lack of previous learning in class or after school. supplementary problems were developed by focusing the ability of basic calculation, the comprehension of concepts, principles, and rules by analyzing necessary contents precisely each domain after itemizing learning contents each unit. the results of the study are this: 1) The students who solved the problems, that were developed to improve the basic learning ability and to supplement the earlier learning during their classes or giving homework, made significant progress in their scholastic achievement; more than those who were not involved. 2) Meaningful changes were demonstrated in the motivation for achievement among the domains of learning attitudes before and after the experiment but, not in their interest, the consciousness of purpose, attention, voluntary and efficient learning as shown in their learning habits. In this study, therefore, the problems which were developed to improve the basic learning ability and to supplement the earlier learning by focusing on the competence for basic calculation, and the comprehension of concepts, principles and rules were effective positively only in the area of motivation for achievement. there were no meaningful differences in the other domains.
The purpose of the study is to find out how to improve the ability of problem-solving for matriculants who have deficiency in understanding general mathematics. To figure out effective teaching method for the matriculants, we manage special lecture for basic mathematics and, analyze student assessment, course evaluation and also effects on calculus subject.
Deep comprehension of basic mathematical notions and concepts is a basic condition of a successful teaching. Some elements of algebraic thinking belong to the elementary school mathematics. The question "What stays the same and what changes?" link arithmetic problems with algebraic conception of variable. We have studied beliefs and comprehensions of future elementary school mathematics teachers on early algebra. Pre-service teachers from three academic pedagogical colleges deal with mathematical problems from the pre-algebra point of view, with the emphasis on changes and invariants. The idea is that the intensive use of non-formal algebra may help learners to construct a better understanding of fundamental ideas of arithmetic on the strong basis of algebraic thinking. In this article the study concerning arithmetic series is described. Considerable number of pre-service teachers moved from formulas to deep comprehension of the subject. Additionally, there are indications of ability to apply the conception of change and invariance in other mathematical and didactical contexts.
The objective of the present study was designed to examine that metacognition education had any promoting effects on the development of students' reasoning ability. Two classes in the 5th grade were asked to participated for the present study. Prior to the metacognition teaching, both the experimental and control group classes were given to the preliminary test in which students' basic ability for mathematical reasoning was graded. Then, the students in the experimental group were given 8hour teaching for the topics on the symmetric properties of geometric figures. The present findings indicate that educational application which motivates metacognition can improve mathematical reasoning ability in elementary students. It is widely accepted that metacognition is an active and conscious mental activity, helps the students perceive voluntarily the study items, and further plays an important role in constructing independent and active thinking processes. Accordingly, the present results implicate that the practical performance of metacognition education into the class indeed contributes to build up or strengthen students' voluntary ways of reasoning.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of abstraction offer of basic concept principle and feedback of self-efficacy attributional and mathematical study ability of math underachievers in high school based on the attribution theory and self-efficacy theory. The hypothesis were posed as below : Hypothesis 1: The experimental group that takes the abstraction offer of concept principle and attributional feedback training would be better at most self-efficacy than the control group that doesn't. Hypothesis 2: The experimental group that takes the abstraction offer of concept principle and attributional feedback training would have better math achievement than the control group that doesn't. They were divided into an experimental group and a control group, and the attribution disposition, self-efficacy and academic achievement of the children were measured by pretest and posttest. For data analysis, SPSS/PC+ program was employed and t-test was conducted. The main findings of this study were as below : First, the abstraction offer of concept principle and attributional feedback training was effective for enhancing the math self-efficacy in high school underachievers. Second, the abstraction offer of concept principle and attributional feedback training was effective for increasing the math achievement in high school underachievers.
