  • Base isolation, having quite simple contents, aims to protect the buildings from earthquake-induced damages by installing structural components having low horizontal stiffness between substructure and superstructure. In this study, an appropriate base isolation system for 2-D reinforced concrete frame is investigated. For different structural heights, the structural systems of 2, 3 and 4 bays are modeled by applying base isolation systems and results are compared with conventional structural systems. 1999 Marmara earthquake data is used for applying the model by time history method in SAP2000 package. Results of various parameters such as base shear force, structure drift ratio, structure period and superstructure acceleration are discussed for all models.

  • The work focuses on the development of a Cu lead-frame with a single-sided adhesive tape for cost reduction and reliability improvement of LOC (lead on chip) package products, which are widely used for the plastic-encapsulation of memory chips. Most of memory chips are assembled by the LOC packaging process where the top surface of the chip is directly attached to the area of the lead-frame with a double-sided adhesive tape. However, since the lower adhesive layer of the double-sided adhesive tape reveals the disparity in the coefficient of thermal expansion from the silicon chip by more than 20 times, it often causes thermal displacement-induced damage of the IC pattern on the active chip surface during the reliability test. So, in order to solve these problems, in the resent work, the double-sided adhesive tape is replaced by a single-sided adhesive tape. The single-sided adhesive tape does net include the lower adhesive layer but instead, uses adhesive materials, which are filled in clear holes of the base film, just for the attachment of the lead-frame to the top surface of the memory chip. Since thermal expansion of the adhesive materials can be accommodated by the base film, memory product packaged using the lead-flame with the single-sided adhesive tape is shown to have much improved reliability. Author allied this invention to the Korea Patent Office for a patent (4-2000-00097-9).

  • The authors investigate the feasibility of applying a vision-based displacement-measurement technique in the characterization of a SMA damper recently introduced in the literature. The experimental campaign tests a steel frame on a uni-axial shaking table driven by sinusoidal signals in the frequency range from 1Hz to 5Hz. Three different cameras are used to collect the images, namely an industrial camera and two commercial smartphones. The achieved results are compared. The camera showing the better performance is then used to test the same frame after its base isolation. U-shaped, shape-memory-alloy (SMA) elements are installed as dampers at the isolation level. The accelerations of the shaking table and those of the frame basement are measured by accelerometers. A system of markers is glued on these system components, as well as along the U-shaped elements serving as dampers. The different phases of the test are discussed, in the attempt to obtain as much possible information on the behavior of the SMA elements. Several tests were carried out until the thinner U-shaped element went to failure.

  • This paper describes three modules for development of the Space Frame Integrated Design System(SFIDS). The Control Module is implemented to control the developed system. The Model Generation Module based on PATRAN user interface enables users to generate a complicated finite element model for space frame structures. The Optimum Design Module base on a branch of combinatorial optimization techniques which can realize the optimization of a structure having a large number of members designs optimum members of a space frame after evaluating analysis results. The Control Module and the Model Generation Module Is implemented by PATRAN Command Language(PCL) while C++ language is used in the Optimum Design Module. The core of the system is PATRAN database, in which the Model Generation Module creates information of a finite element model. Then, PATRAN creates Input files needed for the analysis program from the information of the finite element model in the database, and in turn, imports output results of analysis program to the database. Finally, the Optimum Design Module processes member grouping of a space frame based on the output results, and performs optimal member selection of a space frame. This process is repeated until the desired optimum structural members are obtained.

  • As the requirements on precision and speed of motion in chip mounter increase, vibration forces are always exerted on operating conditions. To insure safety of the chip mounter, the vibration must be kept within an acceptable limit. The focus of this paper is on the identification of dynamic load characteristics and the estimation of static and dynamic stiffness characteristics for Frame Base by judicious selection of the number and the location of the support points. This study carried an analytical and experimental method to estimate the dynamic characteristics in structure.

  • This study analyses the inter-relationships between Safety Cultural Elements by System Dynamics approach. Base Frame for Safety Culture, which is originated from IAEA, NRC and INPO's Safety Culture Documents, helps to elaborate the Causal Loop Diagram of Safety Culture in Nuclear Power Plant(NPP). Also, the simulation results show that ownership of employees is degraded continually and adherence of technical standards is violated because workloads of the employees cannot be minimized and stress and time pressure maintains a high level in NPP.

  • A mechanical device was developed for assisting the grasping function of a person whose fingers suffered cervical injury and thus are unable to grasp. This device is composed of a mechanical glove put on the user's hand and a muscle sensor to measure the activity of his or her muscle. The mechanical glove consists of a finger frame, a base and an air cylinder mounted on the base. With the kinematics carefully designed, the finger frame can achieve the grasping motion under the actuation of the air cylinder. For controlling this motion, an innovative sensor was developed to detect the user's motion intention. The sensor measures the change of the muscle stiffness...

  • In this study, nonlinear dynamic analyses were performed in order to evaluate and compare the structural response of different type of moment resisting frame buildings equipped with conventional braces (CBs) and buckling restrained braces (BRBs) subjected to near-field ground motions. For this, the case study frames, namely, ordinary moment-resisting frame (OMRF) and special moment-resisting frame (SMRF) having two equal bays of 6 m and a total height of 20 m were utilized. Then, CBs and BRBs were inserted in the bays of the existing frames. As a brace pattern, diagonal type with different configurations were used for the braced frame structures. For the earthquake excitation, artificial pulses equivalent to Northridge and Kobe earthquake records were taken into account. The results in terms of the inter-story drift index, global damage index, base shear, top shear, damage index, and plastification were discussed. The analysis of the results indicated a considerable improvement in the structural performance of the existing frames with the inclusion of conventional and especially buckling-restrained braces.

  • A moving object detection algorithm for surveillance video is here proposed which employs background initialization based on two-stage median filtering and a background updating method based on state transition diagram. In the background initialization, the spatiotemporal similarity is measured in the subinterval. From the accumulated difference between the base frame and the other frames in a subinterval, the regions affected by moving objects are located. The median is applied over the subsequence in the subinterval in which regions share similarity. The outputs from each subinterval are filtered by a two-stage median filter. The background of every frame is updated by the suggested state transition diagram The object is detected by the difference between the current frame and the updated background. The proposed method showed good results even for busy, crowded sequences which included moving objects from the first frame.

  • Due to the influence of nonlinearity and time-variation, it is difficult to establish an accurate model of concrete frame structures that adopt active controllers. Fuzzy theory is a relatively appropriate method but susceptible to human subjective experience to decrease the performance. To guarantee the stability of multi-time delays complex system with multi-interconnections, a delay-dependent criterion of evolved design is proposed in this paper. Based on this criterion, the sector nonlinearity which converts the nonlinear model to multiple rule base of the linear model and a new sufficient condition to guarantee the asymptotic stability via Lyapunov function is implemented in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMI). A numerical simulation for a three-layer reinforced concrete frame structure subjected to earthquakes is demonstrated that the proposed criterion is feasible for practical applications.
