Barrier Free Design Methods applied in Passenger Terminals based on Characteristics of Transportation Poor & Barrier Free Elements - Focused on the Gunsan International*Coastal Passenger Boat Terminal - (교통약자의 행동특성과 이동편의시설 설치요소를 통한 여객시설 디자인방법에 관한 연구 - 군산 국제·연안여객선 터미널을 대상으로 -)

  • Due to implementation of legislations for translation poor such as handicapped people, elderlies, children most public buildings are now integrating barrier free design methods. However, barrier free design is still considered as constraints of physical elements that only serve to meet functional aspects for minors and conflict with designs of the space. The authors believe that it is time that barrier free design is considered not as constraints but opportunities that both meet functional and aesthetical needs serving the growing population of transportation poor and others as well. This paper has looked into characteristics of transportation poor and barrier free design elements of passenger terminals and developed 4 categories of design methods. applied by using human sense, form, furniture, and architectural elements. Then the authors analyzed Gunsan International and coastal passenger terminal existing conditions which is considered to be designed to meet barrier free guidelines and legislations through the developed design categories and elements. The result turned out that the subject in regard of barrier free designs for transportation poor lack various applications such as forms that can be used as symbolic and directional elements that assists as wayfinding cues. Also, flexible and multi functional approaches in furniture arrangements, structural approaches are needed.

A Study on the Design of Barriers for the Active Noise Barrier Development (능동형 방음벽 개발을 위한 방음벽 디자인 연구)

  • In this paper survey and analysis of recent trends in noise barriers and noise measurements and assessments were conducted for providing design basis of ANC barriers. Looking at the results, transparent barrier(glass) has received the most attention in domestic and foreign countries, because it has a harmony with the surrounding environment and easy installation in a small space. For optimal barrier design using computer simulation, reliability of simulation has been verified and classified into 5 groups, according to barrier's upper cross section. Evaluation results of barrier's performance and design using computer simulation are as follows : In the case of the "B-type" barrier, it has improved maximum 2.5dB(A) at each point(R1~R6) and have a good workability. Therefore, "B-type" Barriers applied to the next active noise barrier system will be possible.

Research on the Design Guidelines and Implementations of Barrier-free Space for Children - Focused on the Common Spaces of the Outpatient Clinics in Pediatric Rehabilitation Hospitals - (어린이를 고려한 무장애공간 계획기준 및 적용실태 연구 - 어린이 재활병원의 외래부 공용공간을 중심으로 -)

  • This research examines domestic and oversea's barrier-free design guidelines provided exclusively for children and their implementations in the common spaces of the outpatient clinics in two pediatric rehabilitation hospitals in Seoul. Based on literature review, a checklist was developed to compare various barrier-free design guidelines in consideration of children's accessibility in space. In addition, four spatial areas in the outpatient clinics of the two hospitals were investigated based on the checklist. As a result, the domestic and Japanese guidelines were aiming primarily to all user groups regardless of ages. Whereas in other oversea's guidelines, a number of barrier-free design standards exclusive for children were found in the facility items such as handrail, sink, urine, toilet, water fountain, chair, table, shelve, and so on, throughout the indoor waiting and sanitary spaces. Concerning implementations, most of the items in the indoor passage, waiting, and sanitary spaces of the two hospitals were not sufficiently facilitated enough to meet with the barrier-free design standards exclusive for children. As such, it is recommended to review and improve the current domestic barrier-free design guideline to accommodate various physical and spatial needs of children in all age groups and regardless of disability types, in the design of a pediatric rehabilitation hospital in the future.

Design of a Protection Fence by Crashworthiness Analysis (충돌해석을 통한 방호울타리의 설계)

  • In this study, designs of protection fences such as the concrete median barrier and the guardrail were performed. The foreign standard of concrete median barrier was introduced and implemented without modification fitting to domestic vehicles and highway conditions. In a car accident, median barrier doesn't protect vehicles effectively, especially for heavy vehicles such as bus and heavy truck. Guardrail doesn't protect vehicle effectively, either. The purpose of this study is to develop the optimal performance design of concrete median barrier and design of guardrail using the design of experiment as well as crashworthiness analysis which is done by Pam-Crash. As a result of this study, an optimal design of concrete median barrier was obtained considering von Mises stress, volume and COG acceleration of truck. And design of guardrail satisfying the domestic requirements was obtained.

  • Barrier-free design reflects the attention of the disadvantaged groups. As a populous country with the largest population and the largest number of elderly people, China has made great progress in the field of the Barrier-free. The scope of this thesis is from the 1980s to 2012 in China, studying the development process of China's barrier-free design standards by comparing the two barrier-free design standards implemented in the history of such design. In this paper, the two standards are compared and analyzed in the following aspects, which are the numbering, chapters, scope of application, applicable objects and purposes, and so on. Compared with the 2001 barrier-free design standards, the 2012 one can be concluded that the development of barrier-free design in China has been accelerated, the scope of application has been widened than before, the content has been supplemented, and restrictions on terms have been reduced.

Optimal Performance Design for Concrete Median Barrier with Crashworthiness Analysis (차량 충돌 해석을 통한 중앙분리대의 최적 성능 설계)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an optimal performance design ova concrete median barrier using the design of experiment and crash simulation which is done by Pam-Crash, one of the commercial crash simulation software. A formula of characteristic value was suggested to obtain an optimal performance design considering all of von Mises stress, volume and acceleration at center of gravity of a heavy truck. An optimal design of a concrete median barrier was obtained by the analysis of variance based on design of experiment and crash simulation. A crash simulation with the optimal design was accomplished in order to verify the suitability of the suggested formula and the proper application of the design of experiment. The obtained optimal design was satisfied for a domestic design regulation of a concrete median barrier.

  • The median barrier is one of the roadside hardware to prevent severe human and property damage from highway traffic accidents.   • A successful design approach for noise barriers should be multidisciplinary because noise reduction goals influence both acoustical and non-acoustical considerations, such as maintenance, safety, physical construction, cost and visual impact These various barrier design options are closely related with barrier dimensions. In this study, we have proposed an optimal design method of noise barriers using simulated annealing algorithm, providing a barrier having the smallest dimension and achieving the specified noise reduction at a receiver region exposed to the industry and infrastructures, to help a successful barrier design.

  • The existing evaluation of root barrier resistance takes at least two years as an evaluation based on plant growth, and it is difficult to determine early performance in the process of quality control in the field. In this study, thus, the direction of the root barrier resistance evaluation system was presented by considering the construction specifications and design standards for root barrier design. As a result, it was necessary to establish a test method for reproducing simple and consistent test results for evaluating the durability of root barrier materials.
