  • Welding residual stress was measured by Barkhausen noise method. The calibration experiment was done for the quantitative analysis. The specimen for the calibration experiment must has the same thermo-mechanical history as the actual material to be tested. The Barkhausen noise were analysed by the pulse-height distribution. The results show that the distribution and magnitude of welding residual stress from Barkhausen noise method are in good agreement with those from blind hole method.

  • The destructive method is reliable and widely used for the estimation of material degradation but it have time-consuming and a great difficulty in preparing specimens from in-service industrial facilities. Therefore, the estimation of degraded structural materials used at high temperature by nondestructive evaluation such as electric resistance method, replica method, Barkhausen noise method, electro-chemical method and ultrasonic method are strongly desired. In this study, various nondestructive evaluation(NDE) parameters of the Barkhausen noise method, such as MPA(Maximum Peak Amplitude), RMS, IABNS(Internal Area of Barkhausen Noise on Signal) and average amplitude of frequency spectrum are investigated and correlated with thermal damage level of 2.25cr-1.0Mo steel using wavelet analysis. Those parameters tend to increase while thermal degradation proceeds. It also turns out that the wavelet technique can help to reduce experimental false call in data analysis.

  • It is advantageous to use an NDE method to assess the mechanical properties of materials since the conventional method is time-consuming and sometimes requires cutting of sample from the material/component. This paper shows that the ultrasonic and the Barkhausen noise(BHN) methods can be used to accurately characterize forged reactor vessels. The attenuation coefficient of the ultrasonic wave was changed with heat treatment temperature and condition[as-quenched, tempered, PWHT]. The RMS[root mean square] voltage of Barkhausen noise depended on heat treatment temperature and conditions. The fracture appearance transition temperature(FATT) can be predicted using nondestructive evaluation methods.

  • The magnetic nondestructive test can be applied to evaluate the magnetic material characteristics and the fracture properties through the internal defects of SA-508 used in the pressure vessels of the nuclear power plants as the direct and accurate in-situ testing methods. The fracture toughness, yield strength and the stress distribution around the defects in the surface and sub-surface of magnetic materials can be directly estimated by Bark-hausen noise(BN) methods as NDT. The testing process of SA-508 by Barkhausen noise method was advanced by controlling the austenizing peak temperature and the time of maintenance at a constant austenizing peak temperature, therefore causing the variation of fracture toughness. Through above process. we can evaluate the variations of effective grain size and the correlation of effective grain size and FATT at each situation. And the stress distribution around the defects can be quantified nondestructively through Barkhausen method.

  • The destructive method is reliable and widely used for evaluating the properties of material but it is time-consuming and difficult to prepare specimens from in-service industrial facilities. In the present research, Barkhausen Noise (BN) has been used to evaluate changes of mechanical properties due to heat treatment condition. The BN voltage (rms voltage) was measured with grain size. The rms voltage of BN increased with the heat treatment temperature ($870{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$) because the grain size increased with the temperature. The rms voltage of BN decreased with various heat treatment processes, such as quenched, tempered and PWHT. The BN can be used for the nondestructive evaluation of the forged reactor vessels. and moreover, it may be effectively used in the field application.

  • The rolled steels for welded structure applied tensile stress have been examined by means of magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) method and of a physical parameter obtained from a hysteresis loop. The behaviors of MBN parameters and coercive force with tensile stress were discussed in relation to microstructure changes. There is no change in MBN parameters and coercive force below yield strength. The coercive force rises rapidly with tensile stress above yield strength. On the other hand, the rms voltage and the peak in averaged rms voltage take a maximum around yield strength and then decreases. The magnetomotive force at peak in the averaged rms voltage shows a minimum around yield strength. These phenomena are attributed to the combined effects of cell texture and dislocation density. In addition, the behaviors of MBN parameters around yield strength may be reflected by the localized changes in strain field due to the formation of dislocation tangles.

  • In this thesis, we measured the Barkhausen effect of CoFeSiB amorphous ribbon and then investigated its possibility to be used as a sensor material. We used a sample of composition $($Fe_{0.06}$$Co_{0.94}$)_${0.79}$$Si_{2.1}$$B_{18.9}$ with a thickness 12[pm1, width 2.5[rnml and length 5[cm], which was fabricated by a single roll method. In order to improve magnetic characteristics of the sample, we had carried on annealing in the magnetic field and in none magnetic field. And, experimented results to the magnetic characteristics show that the ribbon has large Barkhausen jump even in weak magnetic field below 0.5[0el. From the results, we confirmed that the sample can be used as an magnetic sensor material.

  • In relation to the application of magnetic method to the evaluation of irradiation damage (embrittlement) changes in the magnetic parameters(hysteresis loop and Barkhausen noise) and Vickers microhardness due to neutron irradiation and heat treatment were measured and compared. In the case of irradiation $(2.3{\times}10^{19}\;n/cm^2,\; E{\ge}1\;Mev,\; 288{\circ}C)$ hysteresis loop measurements show that susceptibility decreases as coercivity increase. Saturation magnetization do not show any change. Barkhausen noise amplitude and Barkhausen noise energy have decreased while Vickers microhardness has increased. For isothermally heat treated condition of irradiated specimen at 470 $^{\circ}C$ and 540 $^{\circ}C$, Barkhausen noise energy has increased while Vickers microhardness has decreased. Results of BNE and Vickers microhardness are reversed to the results on irradiated condition. All these consistent changes in magnetic parameter and Vickers microhardness measurement, which are thought to be resulted from the interaction between irradiation-induced defects and dislocation, and magnetic domain, respectively, show a possibility that magnetic measurement may be used to the evaluation of material degradation and recovery due to neutron irradiation and heat treatment, respectively, if a relevant large database in prepared.
