During an investigation of fungi from an elm tree infested with bark beetles in Korea, one isolate, DUCC401, was isolated from elm wood. Based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer and 28S rDNA (large subunit) sequences, the isolate, DUCC401, was identified as Mariannaea samuelsii. Mycelia of the fungus grew faster on malt extract agar than on potato dextrose agar and oatmeal agar media. Temperature and pH for optimal growth of fungal mycelia were 25oC and pH 7.0, respectively. The fungus demonstrated the capacity to degrade cellobiose, starch, and xylan. This is the first report on isolation of Mariannaea samuelsii in Korea.
Hepatoprotective and antioxidant activities of Acer mono and A. okamotoanum were compared after being extracted by low temperature and high pressure (LTHP) at 20 MPa and $60^{\circ}C$ for 15 minutes. Extraction yield of both A. mono and A. okamotoanum was increased about 40~43% by this extraction process. On scavenging activities, the bark of A. okamotoanum from this extraction process showed the highest activity as about 97%. This value was higher than that from conventional water extraction and A. mono extracts. Both of A. mono and A. okamotoanum showed high ability on nitrite scavenging, but decreasing tendency according to increasing of pH. On SOD-like test, A. okamotoanum had the highest activity as 46.28% at $1.0\;mg/m{\ell}$ concentration. A. okamotoanum extracted by LTHP also showed the highest activity as 197.38% in adding $1.0\;mg/m{\ell}$ concentration. Generally, the extracts from low temperature and high pressure extraction process are higher hepatoprotective and antioxidant activities than that from conventional water extraction. It can conclude that the bark of A. okamotoanum has better biological activities than other parts of A. mono.
Cooling and heating equipments of railroad passenger cabin is one of the most important part in keeping the good thermal comfort of the passengers. The bad performance of these equipments usually results in the comfort of the passengers. However, there is no testing method for cooling and heating equipments during manufacturing the passenger car, and calculation method is frequently used. Many railroad operators spend a lot of money for the maintenance. In this study, a new environmental performance test for railroad passenger cabin was suggested. The temperature of the chamber will be changed from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$. The performance test of cooling and heating equipment in controlling the passenger cabin temperature was carried out under various temperature condition. The testing method to investigate the effect of artificial sunlight irradiation on the passenger cabin temperature was also suggested.

This research investigated the dyeing behavior of palmatine (a major coloring compound of Phellodendron bark in addition to berberine) using mercerization (M), tannic acid (T), mercerization-tannic acid (MT), and tannic acid -mercerization (TM) pretreatments. Mercerization was conducted using $20^{\circ}C$ of 20% NaOH for 5 minutes. Tannic acid treatment was conducted using 15% o.w.f. solution of tannic acid at $60^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes and fixed with potassium antimonyl tartrate trihydrate. Dyeing was conducted using 1% o.w.f. palmatine chloride hydrate with 1:100 liquor ratio at $10-95^{\circ}C$ for 10-60 minutes in a dyebath of pH 3-9. MT method resulted in the highest dye uptake and was two times higher than the average dye uptake of T method. MT method provided the best result when the dyeing temperature was $80^{\circ}C$ or $95^{\circ}C$ and the dyeing time was 60 minutes. The pH of the dyebath had less effect on the dye uptake but a pH higher than 5 provided better results. The study confirmed that palmatine is a major coloring compound of Phellodendron bark and that the MT method can be used as a successful cotton dyeing method.

A fungal strain, designated PTT-2, was isolated from the bark of the trunk of a persimmon (Diospyros kaki) tree in Cheongdo, Korea. The isolate showed morphological similarities with Leptosphaerulina saccharicola. Strain PTT-2 had more rapid growth on potato dextrose agar medium than on oatmeal agar, malt extract agar, and synthetic nutrient poor agar media, with colony sizes of 53.8 mm, 49.8 mm, 48.4 mm, and 28.1 mm after 7 days at $25^{\circ}C$ temperature, respectively. Strain PTT-2 produced ascospores, which had irregular wavy edges, oblong to ellipsoidal shape, hyaline appearance and $23.6{\times}10{\mu}m$ size. The black ascomata were developed on PDA medium, and asci were recorded. A BLAST search of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, TEF1-${\alpha}$ and RPB2 gene sequences revealed that strain PTT-2 showed more than 99% nucleotide similarity with a strain of Leptosphaerulina saccharicola previously reported from Thailand. A neighbor-joining phylogenetic tree was constructed by concatenating the above-mentioned sequences, and showed that strain PTT-2 clustered in the same clade with L. saccharicola. Based on these findings, this is the first record of Leptosphaerulina saccharicola occurring in Korea.
Ubiquitous sensor network (USN) based on ZigBee communication protocol has been used in various application fields, such as home-network, intelligent building and machine, logistics, environmental monitoring, military field, security field and etc. The ZigBee is targeted at radio-frequency application that require a low data rate, long battery life and secure network. Especially, the USN system can be applied efficiently to building-indoor where the complex geometry is adopted. In this study, all 90 points of railway cabin indoor were monitored for temperature and humidity using USN technology. All sensors were pre/post-calibrated and the temperature/humidity change were analyzed in a railway cabin in real-time. The results would be useful to develop the cabin heating, ventilating and air conditing (HVAC) system to meet all passengers' thermal comfort regardless of their seat position.
Tuak is a traditional alcoholic beverage, one of the most widely known in the North Sumateran region of Indonesia. It is produced by a spontaneous fermentation process through the application of one or more several kinds of wood bark or root, called raru (Xylocorpus wood bark or a variety of forest mangosteen), into the sap water of sugar palm (Arenga pinnata) for 2−3 days. In this research, yeast that are potentially useful for ethanol production was isolated from Tuak and identified. Based on analysis of D1/D2 domain sequence of LSU (large subunit) rRNA genes, those isolated yeast strains, HT4, HT5, and HT10 were identified as Candida tropicalis. Fermentation test of these C. tropicalis isolates displayed an ability to produce 6.55% (v/v) and 4.58% ethanol at 30℃ and 42℃, respectively. These results indicated C. tropicalis isolates more rapidly utilize glucose and obtain higher levels of the production of ethanol at the higher temperature of 42℃ than S. cerevisiae, a common yeast used for bioethanol fermentation.

To investigate the dying properties of the extracts from different parts of Neolitsea sericea Koidz on Hanji, the dye materials were prepared from the extraction methods using $1{\ell}$ of hot water and alkaline solution with 40 g of leaves, bark, and wood each. K/S values and H (V/C) values of the Hanji dyed at different pH, temperature, time, and concentration of extract were determined using a spectrophotometer, and the maximum absorption wavelength of the dyed Hanji was 400 nm. From the analyzed data, the optimum dying conditions were pH 5 of dying solution, $70^{\circ}C$ of dying temperature, 40 minutes of dying time, and 100% of dye concentration. The color of dyed Hanji was Y to YR and color R- and RP-type could also be formed from the different treatment conditions. From the dyeing using mordants, amount of the bound dye materials was high in the pre-mordanted Hanji and in Hanji treated with extracts from the leaves. Also, the amount of the bound dye materials in the pre-mordanted Hanji was higher when aluminum and iron mordant was used rather than other mordants. Not likely with this, amount of the bound dye materials in the post-mordanted Hanji was higher when copper mordant was used. In color, Hanji treated extracts from the leaves appeared as Y-type and ones treated with extracts from bark and wood showed YR-type.
Mycelium of Ophiostoma quercus albino strain cultured in liquid culture media was harvested, lyophilized, and stored for examining biocontrol efficacy against wood discoloration by staining fungi in the laboratory and field conditions. Dry weight of mycelium grown in brown sugar yeast extract broth(BYB) showed 3.8 times higher than that grown in potato dextrose broth(PDB). The optimum culture period in BYB was 4 weeks. In vitality test of the albino strain, the lyophilized mycelium stored in liquid nitrogen($-196^{\circ}C$) or in a refrigerator($4^{\circ}C$) kept the vitality until 13 months after storage; however, the mycelium stored at room temperature lost the vitality completely after 13 months. The mycelium stored in liquid nitrogen or in a refrigerator protected wood chips from the discoloration by pretreating mycelial suspension on pine wood chips. The mycelium stored at room temperature for 7 months also showed complete protection. These results suggest that the lyophilized mycelium have a biocontrol efficacy only if it keeps the least vitality. In the field conditions, both albino strain and $Woodguard^{(R)}$(commercial chemical protectant) showed significant differences(p=0.05) in discoloration rate as compared to the non-treated control when these were treated on the wood logs of Pinus rigida. The albino strain showed better protection than $Woodguard^{(R)}$. Isolation frequency of blue stain fungi from the chips of wood logs treated with the albino strain was 0% at three months after treatment, while that treated with $Woodguard^{(R)}$ was 76.7%. In another experiment, pre-treatment of mycelial suspension on the cut surface of wood logs also showed significant protection from wood discoloration. Spraying of both albino strain on the cut surface and insecticides on the bark also showed relatively good control effects as compared to insecticide alone on the bark or nontreated control.
