  • Biological control of aphids using "banker-plants with the parasitoiid, Aphidius colemani Viereck (BPAC)" was carried out on cucumber in greenhouse. The BPAC consisting of barley seedlings infested with Schiraphis graminum (Rondani) enhanced the early establishment of Aphidius colemani in the greenhouse and prolonged the control of Aphis gossypii on May 8, 2001 The BPAC was placed in the greenhouse at transplanting at the rate of 1 per 30 m2 of cucumber. Although good control effect was gained until early August after placing banker plants on May 9, the effect after then because of high temperature. The aphid population on cucumber in control plots reached to a peak on June 26, and decreased because of entomopathogenic fungus for rainy season of July, and increased again to a very high population on August.

  • Banker plants are non-crop plants that can be used to maintain natural enemies of crop pests. Orius laevigatus (Fieber) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) is an important natural predator used to control pest insects, such as thrips, in horticultural crops. The development of suitable banker plants is necessary to maintain O. laevigatus populations within agricultural areas and to effectively improve thrips control. The oviposition rate of O. laevigatus was compared when reared on various flowering plants, such as sedum, rose moss, and chrysanthemum; oviposition rate was highest on the yellow-flowered chrysanthemum variety than on any other plant. This study provides important information for the practical application of banker plants to improve the efficiency of O. laevigatus in agricultural areas.

  • Frankliniella occidentalis and Thrips palmi are economically important pests of cucumber. The chemicals used to control them can be effective; however, they should not be used frequently on cucumbers that are consumed raw. Banker plants were selected to increase the control efficiency of Orius laevigatus, a natural enemy that can replace the chemicals. The hatching rate, emergence rate, nymph developmental period, survival rate, and reproductive capacity (fecundity and oviposition period) of O. laevigatus for four plants (moss rose, basil, broad bean, and cucumber) were investigated. The density of O. laevigatus on two selected banker plants was investigated in a cucumber greenhouse. The hatching rate of O. laevigatus eggs was highest at 92% in moss rose; however, there was no significant difference in survival rates between moss rose and basil. The fecundity and oviposition period of O. laevigatus were better in moss rose than in basil, with no significant difference between them. The flowering period of basil was longer than that of moss rose, from April to September. Therefore, basil has potential value as a banker plant for O. laevigatus and is expected to increase the biological control effect of O. laevigatus.

  • This studies by treatment of 25 individual adults of O. laevigatus and Banker plant with different number of eggs of O. laevigatus were conducted to develop new biological control of the western flower thrips (WFT) in chrysanthemum house. In this work, a treatment of 25 individual adults of O. laevigatus, Banker plant with different number of eggs of O. laevigatus and mixed treatment were applied. Initial WFT density per plant were 5 individuals. WFT density was measured every 7days after treatment for 7 weeks. Biological control of WFT by 25 individual adults of O. laevigatus and Banker plant with 25 eggs of O. laevigatus were applied 1 time and resulted in the high control value of thrips 91.8%. The population of WFT was kept under the economic threshold level (1 individual per plant). For the last three years we developed new banker plant system. This system is being developed to improve biological control of WFT on chrysanthemums.

  • To protect plants from damage caused by Panonychus citri (McGregor), practical methods for the use banker plants have been developed to provide a habitat and augment natural enemies of several agricultural pests. The average population density of predatory mites on an Oxalis corniculata (creeping sorrel) sod culture was significantly higher (three times) than that on normal sod culture. Furthemore, the average population density of spider mites on creeping sorrel sod culture was significantly lower (3.7 times) than when weed control was practiced. Average consumption of the eggs and females of Tetranychina harti (Ewing) by Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) females was approximately 1.96 eggs and 1.93 females per day, respectively. Phytoseiulus persimilis AthiasHenriot females never consumed T. harti. However, total development time of T. harti from egg to adult on O. corniculata was 17.4 days, and hatchability and survival rate were 77.5% and 84.8%, respectively.

  • This study was performed in the Tropical Plant Resources Research Center of Korea National Arboretum to assess the effects of natural enemy attack on aphid population feeding on tropical plants. We measured the density of leaf-feeding aphids, Myzus persicae and Aphis gossypii, cohabiting with 5 types of tropical plants at intervals of approximately 2 weeks after introducing their natural enemy, Aphidius colemani. The density of aphids cohabiting with 4 types of tropical plants-Sanchezia parvibracteata, Hibiscus rosa-chinensis, Ficus kurzii, and Aloysia triphylla-started decreasing after 2 weeks of observation and was completely in control after 4 weeks of observation; however, the density of aphids cohabiting with the tropical plant, Hamelia patens, increased during 22 weeks of observation but decreased after the $23^{rd}$ week of observation. We suggest that a banker plant is necessary for the maintenance of A. colemani in tropical greenhouses, and monitoring studies on H. patens, which was weakest against the aphids, should be performed. Our results indicate that biological pest management strategies using their natural enemies were formulated for the construction of new tropical greenhouses.

  • The effect of natural enemies on four major pests of hot pepper was tested in greenhouses. The aphids were successfully controlled by introducing three Aphidius colemani-banker plants, and releasing 23.3 wasps per $m^2$ on April 16 and 23 wasps per $m^2$ in a greenhouse of 660 $m^2$. To control thrips, Orius laevigatus was released twice, 3.0 bugs per $m^2$ at a time(May $11^{th}$ and June $12^{th}$). The thrips population was controlled within 0.3 thrips per flower during the growing season. To control two species of mites, Tetranychus kanzawai and Polyphagotarsonemus latus, and the silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, a total of 113.7 individuals of Amblyseius swirskii were released twice(May $11^{th}$ and $30^{th}$). The densities of B. tabaci and T. kanzawai were kept within 171.0 individuals/trap and 0.8 individual/leaf, respectively. P. latus was suppressed completely twelve days after release. The cost of the released natural enemies to control the four arthropod pests in this study was 420,000 Won per 660 $m^2$.

  • This study reports the results of natural enemy application against four insect pests on greenhouse sweet pepper in winter cropping system. Orius laevigatus ($3.3/m^2$) was released at two different times (Nov. 2005 & Feb. 2006) to control Frankliniella occidentalis, western flower thrips (WFT). Throughout the cropping season, the lowest level recorded of WFT was less than 2.0 individuals per yellow sticky trap. Amblyseius swirskii ($232.3/m^2$) was released four times (Nov. 2007 ~ Aug. 2008) to control Bemisia tabaci, tobacco whitefly (TWF). Until July 2008, TWF population had been suppressed lower than 6.6/trap. Phytoseiulus persimilis ($44.5/m^2$) was released seven times (Apr. 2008 ~ Aug. 2008) to control Tetranychus kanzawai, tea red spider mite (TRSM). As a result, TRSM population was suppressed lower than 1.7/1eaf. To control aphids, Aphidius colemani ($9.5/m^2$) was released seven times (Oct. 2004 ~ Jan. 2005), with the transplantation of banker plants ($5.5pot/660m^2$). As a whole, aphid's population has been successfully reduced to less than 2.0/leaf.
