  • When designing a river, it is important to select the appropriate bank revetment methods, but there are no specific guidelines until now. Accordingly, it is important to prevent over-budgeting by deciding the suitability of the adopted bank revetment methods when designing a river. In this study, an assessment method was developed to assess the suitability of the adopted bank revetment methods when designing a river. By adopting this method to eight rivers, its validity was examined. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used for the assessment, along with suitability index (SI) of the adopted bank revetment methods when designing a river. In order to select the best bank revetment methods, all environmental variables of the selected location have to be considered. Accordingly, to assess the designed bank revetment methods, all variables of the selected location have to be considered. The assessing items include hydraulic stability, environmental-ecological feasibility, economy, and amenity of the bank revetment. Each item includes four to five sub-items, and each sub-items reflect survey results on the locations. The assessment method was adopted and assessed for eight rivers, and bank revetments was designed to determine the SI. The result of this study is considered to be appropriate when assessing an eco-friendly bank revetment methods, and inappropriate designed bank revetments will guide future planners for selecting the most appropriate construction method.

  • Recently, close-to-nature stream improvement works have been carried out in urban streams, where eco-friendly bank revetment methods have been adopted. These bank revetment methods are vulnerable to be damaged or washed away by floods compared to the traditional methods which use concrete materials. Damage analysis methods on the urban streams by the floods of severe rain storm are presented. The analysis methods are the graph-using method and the grid method, which are derived from the survey results at Gwangju stream. Damage analysis grid which is intersected velocity grid and material strength grid is the highest correlation with the damage survey grid. The biggest damage on the bank revetments have been occurred around the crossing structures. Big damages have also been occurred in the connection of low water revetment and the terrace land, and around the structures in the terrace land of the stream.

  • This study is aimed at typifying the crossing structure and inquiring into the characteristics of vegetation distribution by type targeting Dorimcheon(stream), Banghakcheon(stream), Seongnaecheon(stream) and some sections of Yangjaecheon(stream) in Seoul through the establishment of basic data for restoring vegetation in urban stream. This research classified the crossing structure into 56 slope types and 31 vertical types in combination with the three items, such as bank slope(vertical style, slope style) of bank, absence or presence of waterside, and revetment structure. This research derived nine slope types including SB1 (revetment of low water level-revetment with vegetation, and revetment of high water level-nature riverside) including SG5(revetment of low water-concrete, and revetment of high water level-riprap work), and three vertical types, such as VH4(bank revetment-wet masonry), and VH7(bank revetment - concrete )from the target survey areas. Among these, both revetment of low water level and high water level were found to be distributed on the longest section as the type of SG7 and VG7 structured in concrete. As a result of inquiry and analysis of micro topography structure and vegetation structure of eight major types, this research could find out the influence of crossing structure on plant vegetation according to the characteristic by typified item, but there appeared no distinct characteristic of vegetation distribution by crossing structure.

  • The bank revetment work which is conducted on the slope of river bank to protect against flowing water as a geotechnical structure has been applied as an average value of critical tractive force based on domestic and international standard design. Currently, an appropriate evaluation is needed for the hydraulic stability and geotechnical behavior analysis of bank revetments because of the effects of climate change and ambiguous design criterion. This study has compared the critical tractive forces of soil improvement material and conventional materials used for the bank revetment work. Through various experiments, the shear strength of mixtures with soil improvement material was investigated by curing time and mixture ratio. It was found that the critical tractive force of the mixture obtained from a scour test is suitable to the reinforcement of the slope of river bank which has problems such as seepage erosion and scour.

  • The aim of this report is to analyze the Occurring rate of damage at each region of head works and to clear its damaged mechanism, centering around the destroyed situations of head works along both Musim and Bochong Rivers suffered from the storm flood occurred on July 22, 1980. The results obtained from the investigation of 25 head works taken for samples are summarized as follows. 1. The occurring rate of damage at each region of head works showed the largest number of 100 percentage in the revetment and protected riverbed work respectively, in the order of the next largest number, 68 percentage in weir body, 56 percentage in apron and 36 percentage in bank. 2. The destructive damage of revetment influenced largely on sweeping bank away, and destructive sufferings of weir body and protected bed work affected on the destructi on of apron, otherwise the destructive sufferings of apron reversely also acted on the- destruction of weirbody and protected bed work. In other hand, partial damage of weir body at the side of revetment is largely influenced by destructive sweeping away of bank. 3. It was showed that the destructive phenomena of weir body occurred largely at the part of concentrated flow and also had a deep relation with scoring by concentrated flow around upstream foundation of weir. 4. The suffered region of revetment is the down stream part just near weir body and the degree of damage is more severe at the curved part of bank that center of flow is concentrated.

  • The revetment is a installed structure on the slope of river bank to protect against flowing. Through the design standards of domestic and overseas, the maximum tractive force is calculated and applied to the average concept on the slope of river bank. In the case of calculating the method of permissible tractive force on the slope of river bank, there is a need to consider soil sliding. In this study, suggested the tractive force formulae by section of adhesion that have 0 < ${\Phi}$ < $90^{\circ}$ slope of river bank and installed an open channel of length of 20 m and 2 m wide for calculating permissible tractive force and hydraulic model experimented with changing discharge. According to the results, the calculated permissible tractive force of section on the slope is the largest due to the significant effects of surface roughness of different revetment materials. In addition, the permissible tractive force increased in the presence of vegetation but has no the effect by vegetation density.

  • Recent climate changes have increased flood damage on bank and revetment. However design standard for revetment that is the one of the most important facility for flood protection is not enough in Korea. In this study, destruction of rock revetment in Guryecity caused by the flood on Aug 2007 was inquired by analysis using 2D hydraulic simulation model SMS and the propriety of established plan for protection of rock revetment was evaluated. For this purpose, the ranges of protection facility for revetment was calculated by two methods. The one is normal method to calculate range of pier scour protection facility, and the other is a method of the standard for river design in Korea. The results of both methods are compared to evaluate the established plan.

  • In recent years, river maintenance projects using natural methods have been continuously implemented in urban areas and methods emphasizing ecology are being developed and constructed in revetment areas. However, there is insufficient technical review on the hydraulic stability of those revetment methods during the event of flood. Therefore, a hydraulic analysis is necessary for the stream where revetments are applied. This study was conducted to develop an objective test method for the hydraulic stability of green revetment media. For this purpose, hydraulic model tests were performed for the green base materials for revetments. Tests were conducted using experimental devices for the hydraulic model which were installed to simulate the rapid current during the flood. Loss of soil by the hydraulic condition was compared and analyzed with that of dry green revetment media, and the evaluations were made on the corrosion resistance, tractive force, and contractile force. Test results showed that green revetment media had higher corrosion resistance in non-vegetation condition compared to dry green revetment media, and the loss of base materials by the rooting of vegetation showed significant reduction by the vegetation. In addition, results of the allowable tractive force of the base material indicated it is relatively stable in vegetation condition but scouring can occur in non-vegetation condition. Therefore, the development of vegetation in revetment areas is anticipated to be effective for the stability of revetment areas by reducing external forces interacting with the corrosion resistance and stream bank. The green revetment media in expected to contribute to the stability of revetment areas.
