Measuring the end-to-end available bandwidth in the Internet is a useful tool for distributedapplication services or QoS (Quality-of-Service) guarantee. To measure the end-to-end available bandwidth, Single-hop Gap model-based packet train measurement techniques are well-known. However, the error of packet train output gap can happen by network topologies. This error of the output gap causes the inaccuracy of the available bandwidth measurement. In this paper, we propose a new end-to-end available bandwidth measurement technique with accurate capacity measurement and fast convergence methods. To solve the erroneous capacity measurement problem of the back-to-back packet train transmission, we propose a new available bandwidth measurement method by decoupling the capacity measurement with the initial gap of the packet train. Also, we propose a new technique to predict the proper initial gap of the packet train for faster convergence. We evaluate our proposed method by the simulation in various topologies comparing with previous methods.
Streaming protocol with the Available Bandwidth measurement scheme has problems that are to measure a Available Bandwidth uncorrectly and slowly. In this basis, in order to overcome limitations of the previous streaming protocols, we propose the NABO that is a New Available Bandwidth measurement scheme used by OWD(One-Way Delay). Proposed NABO(New Available Bandwidth measurement based on OWD) measures the constant transmission delay occurred by bottleneck link capacity and the variable delay. Competing traffic contribute to the variable delay. Through the measurement of the constant transmission delay and the competing traffic, a NABO can measure the Available Bandwidth correctly and fast in network. The simulation result proves that the proposed NABO has a performance that satisfies both accuracy viewpoint and measurement speed viewpoint.
We present a novel bandwidth measurement scheme for multimode optical fibers. Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) radiation was utilized for a source of intrinsically modulated light with a wide modulation bandwidth. In our measurement scheme, the continuous-wave (CW) ASE light that passed through a multimode fiber (MMF) under test was analyzed by the fourth-order power with a high-speed photodetector and an electric spectrum analyzer. The modulation transfer function of the multimode fiber could be directly measured with the photoelectric spectra in the modulation frequency domain. The measurement result of our method was experimentally compared to that of the conventional measurement scheme based on the impulse response measurement. It has been found that our scheme provides a stable measurement means of MMF characterization that is suitable for the field testing due to the simplicity of the system.

In this paper, a new approach is proposed for effectively estimating the occupied bandwidth of frequency modulation (FM) signals. The proposed method makes use of the smoothing niter for removing the perturbation of spectrum envelope, which frequently occurs in FM signals having the instantaneous frequency. An effective procedure is derived for finding the relatively accurate bandwidth of FM signals combined with x-dB bandwidth measurement method, which International Telecommunication Union-Radiocommunication (ITU-R) recommended. It was shown that the proposed approach provides superior performance relative to the one obtained with the x-dB bandwidth measurement method in terms of sample bias and mean squared error of bandwidth estimates.
This paper proposes a bottleneck link bandwidth measurement algorithm for reducing packet transmission delay within the grid network. There are two methods for measuring bottleneck link bandwidth:Packet Pair algorithm and Paced Probes algorithm. They measure bottleneck link bandwidth using the difference in arrival times of two paced probe packets of the same size traveling from the same source to destination. In addition, they reduce the influences of cross traffic by pacer packet. But there are some problems on these algorithms:it's not possible to know where bottleneck link occurred because they only focus on measuring the smallest link bandwidth along the path without considering bandwidth of every link on the path. So hop-by-hop based bottleneck link bandwidth measurement algorithm can be used for reducing packet transmission delay on grid network. Timestamp option was used on the paced probe packet for the link level measurement of bottleneck bandwidth. And the reducing of packet transmission delay was simulated by the solving a bottleneck link. The algorithm suggested in this paper can contribute to data transmission ensuring FTP and realtime QoS by detecting bandwidth and the location where bottleneck link occurred.

This paper proposes a new measurement method for the effective measurement of the 99% occupied bandwidth (OBW) at monitoring stations. Although the OBW measurement of radio signal is recommended by the International Telecommunication Union Radio (ITU-R) with several methods, there still does not exist a clear measurement recommendation or standard for terrestrial DTV signal on-air environment. Modified adjacent channel power ratio (MACPR), which can be applied to 8-VSB (Vestigial Side Band) DTV (Digital Television) signal, is herein defined to verify the results of measurements obtained using the proposed measurement method. MACPR is a proper measuring parameter for determining the measuring area of a monitoring station. From measurement results obtained in real field environment, it has been found that the OBW of 8-VSB DTV signal can be effectively measured in areas where the MACPR value is over 35 dB and when the measurements are repeated more than 600 times in the same reception site. It also has been verified that measured results are within an error range of +/-0.1% compared to results directly obtained at a transmission station. It is expected that the proposed method is able to be employed in order to determine the proper location of monitoring station and provide a reliable OBW measurement procedure for 8-VSB DTV signal on-air environment.

The methods of bandwidth measurement in the field environments are notified in ITU-R spectrum monitoring(SM) documents. But, these methods for terrestrial DTV and T-DMB are not informed yet. The x-dB bandwidth is the most suitable method fer the bandwidth measurement of terrestrial digital broadcasting signals. So, we proposed the suitable x-dB value for x-dB bandwidth measurement of the digital broadcasting signal that is not notified in ITU-R SM documents. As a result, we derived the x dB value of -12 dB and -8 dB that can be used fer estimation of occupied bandwidth of DTV and T-DMB signals respectively by x dB bandwidth measurement in field environments.

CDMA(code division multiple access) has very large peak to average power ratio(PAR) and behave as noise-like wide band digital signals with 1.2288 Mbps transmission rate. For signals with high PAR like CDMA, it is reasonable to prescribe occupied bandwidth(OBW) as average occupied bandwidth. Bandwidth measurements of CDMA signals at remote site are affected by co-channel and adjacent channel interference from adjacent CDMA base station, distortion of signal by fading effect, spurious emission and environment noises. In this study, we have compared OBW measurements in an on-air environment with those measured in a base station using adjacent channel leakage ratio(ACLR) as a reference measurement factor. As results of analysis, the OBW at ACLR$\geq$35 ㏈ shows nearly same statistical characteristics regardless of the measurement locations and environments.
Grid computing is an emerging technology that enables global resource sharing. In Korea, the $K^*$Grid provides an extremely powerful research environment to both industries and academia. As part of the $K^*$Grid project, we have constructed, together with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information and a number of domestic universities, a supercomputer Grid test bed which connects several types of supercomputers based on the globus toolkit. To achieve efficient networking in this Grid testbed, we propose a novel method of available bandwidth measurement, called Decoupled Capacity measurement with Initial Gap (DCIG), using packet trains. DCIG can improve the network efficiency by selecting the best path among several candidates. Simulation results show that DCIG outperforms previous work in terms of accuracy and the required measurement time. We also define a new XML schema for DCIG request/response based on the schema defined by the Global Grid Forum (GGF) Network Measurement Working Group (NM-WG).
