  • For the purpose of monitoring by ultrasonic test of the ball bearing conditions in rotating machinery, a system for their diagnosis was developed. ultrasonic technique is used to detect abnormal conditions in the bearing system. And various data such as frequency spectrum, energy and amplitude of ultrasonic signals, and ultrasonic parameters were acquired during experiments with the simulated ball bearing system. Based on the above results and practical application for power plant, algorithms and judgement criteria for diagnosis system was established. Bearing diagnosis system is composed of four parts as follows : sensing part for ultrasonic sensor and preamplifier, signal processing part for measuring frequency spectrum, energy and amplitude, interface part for connecting ultrasonic signal to PC using A/D converter, graphic display and software part for display of bearing condition and for managing of diagnosis program.

  • Hearing loss caused by exposure to industrial machine noise results in devastating disability that is mostly preventable. And recent researches indicate that the noise may also induce hypertension and cardiovascular disease. In addition the sleep polygraph provides many indicators of sleep disturbance by the noise. In this paper we make an analysis on ball bearing machine noise, a kind of the industrial noise. The analysis of Its power spectrum is based on FFT(Fast Fourier Transform). And then the spectral results of the noise are compared with that of the spectrum for an auditory signal. The signal is measured from the pronunciation of two Koreans. Finally we suggest the most important stratagem to prevent the noise for worker's health and efficiency.

  • $\mu$BGA(Ball Grid Array) is growing in response to a great demand for smaller and lighter packages for the use in laptop, mobile phones and other evolving products. However it is not easy to find its defect by human visual due to in very small dimension. From this point of view, we are interested its development of a vision based automated inspection algorithm. For this, first a 2D view of $\mu$BGA is described under a special blue illumination. Second, a notation-invariant 2D inspection algorithm is developed. Finally a 3D inspection algorithm is proposed for the case of stereo vision system. As a simulation result, it is shown that 3D defect not easy to find by 2D algorithm can be detected by the proposed inspection algorithm.

  • Chip-on-glass(COG) mounting of area array electronic packages was attempted by heating the rear surface of a contact pad film deposited on a glass substrate. The pads consisted of an adhesion(i.e. Cr or Ti) and a top coating layer(i.e. Ni or Cu) was heated by an UV laser beam transmitted through the glass substrate. The laser energy absorbed on the pad raised the temperature of a solder ball which is in physical contact with the pad, forming a reflowed solder bump. The effects of the adhesion and top coating layer on the laser reflow soldering were studied by measuring temperature profile of the ball during the laser heating process. The results were discussed based on the measurement of reflectivity of the adhesion layer. In addition, the microstructures of solder bumps and their mechanical properties were examined.

  • This study investigates the flow efficiency based on valve shape. Three models are designed for the throttle, ball, and butterfly valves. Results show that Flow Model B, representing the ball valve, demonstrates the fastest flow rate among the three models. Although pressure contours are present on the side surfaces of the valve wings for all models, Flow Model C, representing the butterfly valve, demonstrates to be under the least amount of applied pressure among the three models. The results of this study can be utilized to efficiently control the air flow through various types of valves.

  • A study about two-dimensional pursuit-evasion dynamic games is presented and discussed. A pursuer tries to intercept an evader by a strategy based on proportional navigation guidance, while the evader tries to maximize a miss distance by the optimal control. The study is applied to a ball game and an air-combat game. The results show the same features exist in both games, therefore the study will be able to apply for general two dimensional dynamic games. In the ball game, the study is extended to cases where a goal exists, while in the air-combat game, some three-dimensional problems are solved and the results are also shown.

  • The effects of ZnO coating on the sensing properties of CNT:ZnO based gas sensors were studied for $H_2S$ gas. The nano ZnO sensing materials were grown by hydrothermal reaction method. CNT:ZnO was prepared by ball-mill method. The mole range of nano ZnO coating on CNT surface was from 0 to 10%. The CNT:ZnO gas sensors were fabricated by a screen printing method on alumina substrates. The structural and morphological properties of the CNT:ZnO sensing materials were investigated by XRD, EDS, SEM and TEM. The XRD patterns showed that CNT:ZnO powders with hexagonal structure were grown with (002) dominant peak. The diameter of CNT from TEM was about 28 nm.

  • This paper presents the thermal characteristics analysis of a high-speed HMC spindle system with angular contact ball bearings, built-in motor, oil-jet lubrication method, oil jacket cooling method, and so on. The spindle system is composed of the main spindle and sub-spindle which are mechanically connected by a flexible coupling. The spindles are supported by two front and rear bearings, and the built-in motor is located between the front and rear bearings of the sub-spindle. The thermal analysis model of spindle system is constructed by the finite element method, and the thermal characteristics in the design stage are estimated based on temperature distribution, heat flow and thermal deformation under the various testing conditions related to material of bearing ball, spindle speed and coolant temperature.

  • In this studies, subjective evaluation of heavy-weight floor impact sound through classification was conducted. Heavyweight impact sounds generated by an impact ball were recorded through dummy heads in apartment buildings. The recordings were classified according to the frequency characteristics of the floor impact sounds which are influenced by the floor structure with different boundary conditions and composite materials. The characteristics of the floor impact noise were investigated by paired comparison tests and semantic differential tests. Sound sources for auditory experiment were selected based on the actual noise levels with perceptual level differences. The results showed that roughness and fluctuation strength as well as loudness of the heavy-weight impact noise had a major effect on annoyance.

  • This paper describes a local modification capability on shell meshes, which can change a 'constant or variable radius of rounding for the s h q edges of the stamping die shoulder in the mesh. The algorithm consists of the followin_e three main steps; (1) the rounding area for sharp edges of a die shoulder are detected from the given shell mesh, (2) a rolling-ball surface with a given constant or variable radius is generated, which is contacti% with two incident face groups of the sharp edges, (3) the rounding area of the mesh is cut off, and a new mesh for the rolling-ball surface is generated and implanted into the gap. Owing to this rounding modification capability, CAE engineers can examine various cases based on the existing dies by scanning them to form polyhedral models and then changing radii of die shoulders for stamping process simulation.
