Comparison of the Electromyographic Changes in the Vastus Medialis Oblique and Vastus Lateralis Muscles According to the Knee Joint Angle During Squat Exercise Using a Gym Ball

  • Background: Squatting is one of the best functional exercises to strengthen the quadriceps muscle in independent gait and activities of daily living. Although the use of a gym ball during squat exercise is the most common way of strengthening the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) muscle, published data on this subject are limited. Objects: The purpose of this study was to compare the sequential muscle activation of the VMO and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles during squat exercise using a gym ball at different knee flexion angles. Methods: Forty healthy adults were randomly divided into experimental (squat exercise using a gym ball) and control (squat exercise alone) groups, in which squats were performed at $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ knee flexion. Electromyographic (EMG) activity data were collected over 10 seconds under the 2 angles of knee flexion ($45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$). Results: There was significant group and time interaction effect for VMO and VL muscle activation at $45^{\circ}$ knee flexion. This was similarly demonstrated at $90^{\circ}$ knee flexion. No significant group main effect and time main effect for VMO and VL muscle activation were noted at $45^{\circ}$ knee flexion, respectively. In contrast, there was significant group main effect and time main effect for VMO and VL muscle activation at $90^{\circ}$ knee flexion. These significant differences were demonstrated through two-way analysis of variance over repeated measurements, suggesting that the EMG activity of the VMO muscle during squatting with a gym ball showed remarkable improvement compared to that of the VL muscle. Conclusion: This research suggests that squat exercise using a gym ball may be more beneficial in improving the activity of VMO than of the VL muscle at both $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ of knee flexion, respectively. We highly recommend squat exercises with a gym ball for selective strengthening of the VMO muscle in knee rehabilitation.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of squat exercise using a ball on the gap between knees and Q angle of a subject with a genu-varum, and to prove the effect, to provide a clinical basis for developing into a knee correction exercise program. Methods : As a result of posture measurement through GPS, 26 female with genu-varum with a knee length of 5 cm or more were studied. The group was randomly assigned to 13 squat exercise group using ball (experimental group) and 13 general squat exercise groups (control group). The experimental group placed the ball between both knees in a position where the distance between both feet was slightly wider than the shoulder width on a flat support surface, and fixed the ball, and then squat with the start signal. The control group squats without a ball. Each group performed three sets of exercise three times a week for six weeks. Before their exercise, after three and six weeks, EMG, GPS, digital goniometer measurement, the vastus medialis (VM), the vastus lateralis (VL), and the Q-angle were measured in the squat exercise posture. EMG was measured in squat exercise posture. Results : The distance between the knees was reduced. EMG is activated in group A, the group B experimental results showed the high activity of the VL. Q-angle had increased. But the experimental group increased more than the control group. Conclusion : We have confirmed through our experiments that the distance interval between the knees during squat exercises using a ball can be reduced. Furthermore, it would also be helpful to ensure the treatment of genu-varum.

쪼그려 앉기(Leg Squat) 운동 시 등척성 고관절 내·외전이 내·외측광근의 근 활성도에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Isometric Hip Adduction and Abduction on the Muscle Activities of Vastus Medialis Oblique and Vastus Lateralis during Leg Squat Exercises)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of isometric hip adduction and abduction on the muscle activities of vastus medialis oblique(VMO) and vastus lateralis(VL) during leg squat exercises. This study consisted of 21 healthy subjects who had no medical history of anterior knee pain or lower extremity disorders. The ball and belt were used to isometrically adduct and abduct the hip joint during the leg squat exercise, respectively. The surface electromyograms of VMO and VL were analyzed, and the findings were used to calculate the VMO:VL ratio during 3 different quadriceps-strengthening exercises(leg squat, LS leg squat with isometric hip adduction, LSHD leg squat with isometric hip abduction, LSHB). The muscle activities of VMO and VL and the VMO:VL ratios were compared using the paired t-test with Bonferroni adjustment. The results showed that the muscle activities of VMO and VL during LSHD were greater than those during LSHB. The VMO:VL ratio was the highest during LSHD. This finding suggests that LSHD using a ball is more effective than LS and LSHB in selectively increasing the muscle activities of VMO. Therefore, we suggest that leg squat exercise with isometric hip adduction using a ball would be useful for maintaining correct patella tracking and for selectively strengthening VMO.

다양한 불안정면에서의 스쿼트 운동이 체간 및 하지 근육 활성도에 미치는 영향 (The Effect on Muscle Activation in Trunk and Low-limbs during Squat Exercise on Various Instability Surface)

  • 이 연구는 다양한 불안정면에서의 스쿼트 운동이 체간과 하지근육의 활성도에 미치는 영향을 비교하는데 목적이 있다. 10명의 피험자가 안정면, 불안정면인 스타빌리티 블루와 블랙, 보수에서 75% 1RM의 강도에서 스쿼트 동작을 실시하였다. 체간근육으로는 복직근, 외복사근, 내복사근 및 다열근에 근전도를 부착하였고, 하지근육으로는 대둔근, 중둔근, 대퇴이두근, 대퇴직 근, 외측광근, 내측광근, 내측비복근, 외측비복근, 가지미근, 전경근에 근전도를 부착하여 스쿼트 동작의 상승과 하간구상의 근활성도를 측정하였다. 안정면과 불안정면에서의 근활성도를 비교하기 위하여 일원변량분석을 실시하였으며, 사후검증으로 sheffe를 이용하였다. 하강구간에서 근활성도는 보수에서의 스쿼트 동작 시 내측광근, 다열근, 대둔근과 중둔근의 활성도가 안정면과 다른 불안정면에서의 스쿼트 동작 시보다 높게 나타났다. 상승구간에서 근활성도는 보수에서의 스쿼트 동작 시 대둔근의 활성도가 안정면과 다른 불안정면에서의 스쿼트 동작 시보다 높게 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 보수에서의 스쿼트 동작이 체간근육과 둔근의 활성도를 증가시키는데 효과적이라고 제시할 수 있다. 그러나 하지근육의 활성도는 불안정성에 따른 차이가 없는 것으로 사료된다.

Comparison of Lower Extremity Muscle Activity during the Deep Squat Exercise Using Various Tools

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of assistance tools such as gym balls, wedges, and straps on lower extremity muscle activity and the increase in the range of motion made possible by the use of these tools. The subjects were divided into two groups: a group capable of deep-squatting (PS) and the second finding it impossible or having difficulty in performing such squats (IS). Methods: Twenty-three subjects participated in this study. Surface electromyography was used to measure the muscle activation of the rectus femoris (RF), vastus medialis (VM), and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles during deep squats, normal squats (NS), gym ball squats (GS), wedge squats (WS), and strap squats (SS). A motion analysis system was used to measure the range of motion of the knee joint during each of these exercises. Results: There was a significant difference in the RF muscle activity between the possible squat (PS) and the impossible squat (IS) groups in the GS, and there were significant differences in the RF and TA muscle activity between the groups in the WS. Both the PS group and the IS group showed a significant difference in the TA muscle activity depending on the tool used. There were also significant differences in the range of motion of the knee joints between the intervention methods using NS and those using the tools. Conclusion: In both groups, the muscle activity of the TA muscles was lower when GS, WS, and SS were performed compared to NS. In addition, compared to NS, the range of motion of the knee joint increased when the three tools were used. This study shows that the activity of the RF, VM, and TA muscles decreased and the range of motion of the knee joint increased during deep squats for both the PS and IS groups when tools were used.

동작관찰 훈련과 운동 상상훈련이 뇌 활성상태에 미치는 효과 (Effects of Action Observation Training and Motor Image Training on Brain Activity)

  • Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference of brain activity during action observation training and image training throughout EEG. Methods This study was participated 1 healthy college student without mental illness or cognitive impairment. The subject was randomly selected from university students and was interested in participating in the experiment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the visual and auditory stimuli (action observation) and brain image training. Results The results of our study, EEG value measured o.1 during resting. But brain activity changed to 0.3 during action observation. Finally, it changed to .05 after brain image training. Conclusion EEG measurement results were showed that after watching the Ball squat video, Brain activity increased.

벽 미끄러짐 쪼그려 앉기 방법에 따른 넙다리네갈래근의 근활성도 비교 (Comparison of Quadriceps Femoris Muscle Activations during Wall Slide Squats)

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was compare quadriceps femoris muscle activity while performing wall slide squats of four methods. METHODS: Forty subjects, with no history of patellofemoral pain, quadriceps injury, or other knee injury volunteered for this study. Muscle activation of the vastus medialis obliquus, rectus femoris, vastus lateralis muscles were recorded while subjects performed 10 consecutive wall slide squats. Subjects performed the wall slide squats during four different methods: (1) basic wall slide squat, (2) keep back upright against fitness ball, (3) standing of unstable surface, (4) squeezing ball between both knees. Statistical analysis were accomplished by utilizing the one-way ANOVA(Bonferroni's post-hoc test) by SPSS 20.0 program. Significance level was set at p<.05. RESULTS: Muscle activations induced wall slide squats of four methods compared and results showed that there was significant difference only in vastus medialis obliquus and rectus femoris but there was no significant difference in vastus lateralis. The vastus medialis obliquus was significantly different only keep back upright against fitness ball at post-hoc test. The rectus femoris was significantly different keep back upright against fitness ball and standing of unstable surface at post-hoc test. CONCLUSION: Based on these results, we conclude that quadriceps femoris muscle activations are differenced by performing wall slide squats of four different methods in healthy subjects. These data suggest that for quadriceps muscle strengthening, exercise professionals can perform the wall slide squats by altering several task variables. Further research is needed to determine the exact mechanism by which quadriceps function is altered.

볼을 이용한 스쿼트와 내로우 스쿼트가 안굽이 무릎을 가진 성인의 근 두께, Q각 및 무릎 사이 간격에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Ball-Based Squats and Narrow Squats on Muscle Thickness, Q Angle and Gap between the Knees in Adults with Genu Varum)

  • Purpose : Genu varum is a condition characterized by a wider than normal gap between. This may be due to muscle weakness caused by poor posture, lifestyle, or lack of exercise. This study aimed to compare the effects of ball-based squats and narrow squats on muscle thickness, Q-angle, and the gap between the knees, in order to assess the potential for improving this condition. Methods : Twenty six adult participants with genu varum were randomly assigned to either a ball-based squat group (n=13) or a narrow squats group (n=13). Both groups performed their respective exercises three times weekly for 4 weeks. The data was analyzed using paired t-tests to compare pre- and post- intervention measurements within each group, and independent t-test was used to compare the two groups. Results : Both groups showed significant improvement in the thickness of the vastus lateralis and medialis, and rectus femoris muscles, as well as a significant decrease in the gap between the knees (p<.05). However, there was no significant difference in Q-angle variation between the two group. Furthermore, there was no significant differences in the Q-angle, gap between the knees, and muscle thickness variation between both groups. Conclusion : The results suggest that both ball-based squats and narrow squats are effective in improving muscle thickness and reducing the gap between the knees in adults with genu varum. However, there was no significant difference between the two types of squats in terms of their effects on the Q-angle. These findings highlight the potential for exercise interventions to address this common postural issue.

치료적 운동이 축구 특이적 골반 앞 기울임을 가진 유소년 축구선수 엉덩관절의 관절가동범위, 도수근력, 기능적 움직임 및 방사선학적 평가에 미치는 영향: 증례보고 (Effects of Therapeutic Exercise on Hip Joint Range of Motion, Manual Muscle Test, Functional Movement Screen and Radiological Evaluation in a Youth Football Player with Football-specific Anterior Pelvic Tilt: A Case Report)

  • PURPOSE: This study was conducted to determine the effects of therapeutic exercise on range of motion (ROM), the manual muscle test (MMT), functional movement screen (FMS) and radiological evaluation in a youth football player with football-specific anterior pelvic tilt (APT). METHODS: The subject of this case report was a 12-year-old youth football player, who presented with football-specific APT. Therapeutic exercise consisted of hamstring stretch, prone hip extension, abdominal crunch, bridging with isometric hip abduction, plank exercise with posterior tilt and posterior pelvic tilting exercise using a swiss-ball for 40 min/day, twice a week for 8-weeks. ROM, MMT, FMS (deep squat, hurdle step, inline lunge, shoulder mobility, active straight-leg raise, rotary stability and trunk stability push-up) and radiographs (lumbar lordotic and sacral horizontal angle) were analyzed before and after week 8 of therapeutic exercise. RESULTS: The ROM, MMT, and FMS increased and the lumbar lordotic angle and sacral horizontal angle improved after 8-weeks of therapeutic exercise. CONCLUSION: The results of this case report suggest that therapeutic exercise improves ROM, MMT and radiography associated parameters in youth football players with football-specific APT. These findings have clinical implications for therapeutic exercise in youth football players with football-specific APT.

남자체육영재 선발자의 영양섭취, 신체조성 및 체력에 관한 연구 -부산, 울산, 경남지역 체육영재 선발자를 중심으로- (A Study on Nutrient Intakes, Body Composition and Physical Fitness in Gifted Athletic Boys -Focused on Gifted Athletic Boys in Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongsangnam-do-)

  • 본 연구는 2009년도 6월 부산, 울산, 경남지역 초등학교 1~3학년에 재학 중인 남녀 학생 중 학급담임교사 또는 학교장의 추천을 받은 체육영재 추천자들을 대상으로 체육과학연구원에서 개발한 KOSTASS 프로그램에 의해 경기 종목별 적합도 분석과 종목별 전문가 심사과정을 거쳐 총 60명을 선발하여 그중 남자 50명의 신체조성, 영양섭취량 및 체력의 상관성을 분석하였다. 영양섭취에 대한 분석 결과 총 열량섭취량은 수영군이 2041 kcal로 가장 많이 섭취하였으나 그룹간 유의한 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 비타민 C는 체조군에 비해 수영군이 유의하게 많이 섭취하였다. 대부분의 영양소는 수영군이 많이 섭취하는 것으로 나타났으나 그룹 간 유의한 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 신체조성에 대한 분석 결과 신장은 육상군과 수영군이 체조군에 비해 유의하게 크게 나타났으며, 체중, 체지방, 체지방률 및 제지방량은 체조군에 비해 수영군이 유의하게 높게 나타났다. 체력에 대한 분석 결과 팔굽혀펴기는 수영군에서 가장 높게 나타났으나 그룹 간 유의한 차이는 없었다. 농구공던지기는 육상군과 수영군이 체조군에 비해 유의하게 멀리 던졌으며, 윗몸일으키기는 육상군에 비해 수영군이 유의하게 많이 실시하는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 50 m달리기는 육상군이 유의하게 빠른 것으로 나타났으며, 하프스쿼트, 제자리멀리뛰기, 1,000 m달리기, 사이드스텝, 앉아 앞으로 굽히기는 그룹 간 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 영양섭취와 신체조성의 상관관계에서 체중은 단백질, 인, 나트륨, 비타민 $B_1$, 비타민 C, 나이신과 정적 상관관계를 보였다. 그리고 BMI는 나트륨, 나이신과 정적상관관계를 보였으며, 체지방은 나이신과 정적상관관계를 보였다. 체지방률은 비타민 C, E, 나이신, 엽산과 정적상관관계를 나타냈으며, 제지방은 지질, 칼슘, 비타민 A, C, E, 엽산을 제외하고 모두 정적상관관계를 보였다. 영양섭취와 체력과의 상관관계에서 팔굽혀펴기는 철과 비타민 C에서 정적상관관계를 보였다. 앉아서 농구공던지기는 지질, 섬유소, 비타민 A, E, 엽산을 제외한 나머지 모든 변인들과 정적상관관계를 보였으며, 윗몸일으키기는 비타민 $B_1$에서 정적상관관계를 보였다. 하프스쿼트는 철과 정적상관관계를 보였으며, 제자리멀리뛰기는 총 열량섭취량, 지질, 비타민 A, $B_1$, $B_2$에서 정적상관관계를 보였다. 1,000 m달리기는 단백질, 탄수화물, 섬유소, 인, 철, 나트륨, 아연과 부적상관관계를 보였으며, 사이트스텝은 나이신과 정적상관관계를 보였다. 윗몸 앞으로 굽히기는 총 열량섭취량, 탄수화물, 인, 나트륨, 아연, 비타민 $B_2$와 부적상관관계를 보였다. 신체조성과 체력과의 상관관계에서 앉아서 농구공던지기는 체중, BMI, 체지방, 체지방률, 제지방량과 정적상관관계가 나타났으며, 제자리 멀리뛰기는 제지방량과 정적상관관계를 보였다. 하지만 1,000 m달리기와 50 m달리기는 체중과 제지방량과 부적상관관계를 보였다.
