Research to replace metal mechanical elements with polymer materials has recently accelerated. However, polymers exhibit less favorable mechanical properties than metal materials, and are often easily worn-out owing to frictional heat when their mechanical elements contact while in relative motion. Therefore, research on the polymer tribological properties is required to employ polymer materials in mechanical elements operating under harsh conditions. In this study, we examine the effect of mechanical part operating temperatures on the material friction and wear characteristics of polymer materials. We conduct ball-on-disk friction tests under dry conditions at various temperatures, using a metal ball with high hardness and a polymer as the counter surface. Each test is repeated at least three times to ensure the reliability of the test results. Before the friction test, we analyze the surface hardness and roughness of each polymer specimen; after the friction test, we use a three-dimensional confocal microscope to compare and analyze the polymer specimen wear characteristics. Based on this study, we systematically elucidate the polymer material tribological characteristics. This information should be useful for selecting and utilizing polymer materials at various temperatures.
The current study was conducted to elucidate the effect of cementite morphology and matrix-ferrite microstructure on sliding wear behavior in spheroidized high carbon (1wt. % C) steel. The high carbon steel was initially heat treated to obtain a full pearlite or a martensite microstructure before the spheroidization. The spheroidizing heat treatment was performed on the full pearlitic steel for 100 hours at 700℃ and tempering was performed on the martensitic steel for 3 hours at 650℃. A spheroidized cementite phase in a ferrite matrix was obtained for both the full pearlite and the martensite microstructures. Sliding wear tests were conducted using a pin-on-disk wear tester with the heat treated steel as the disk specimen. An alumina(Al2O3) ball was used as the pin counterpart during the test. After the spheroidizing heat treatment and the tempering, both pearlite and martensite exhibited similar microstructures of spheroidized cementite in a ferrite matrix. The spheroidized pearlite specimens had lower hardness than the tempered martensite; however, the wear resistance of the spheroidized pearlite was superior to that of the tempered martensite.
Dry sliding wear behavior of AISI 52100 steel that has a pearlite or bainite microstructure was characterized to explore the effect of microstructure on the wear of the steel. Isothermal heat treatments were employed to obtain the different microstructures. Pin-on-disk type wear tests of the steel disk were performed at loads of 25~125N in air against an alumina ball. Sliding speed and wear distance used were 0.1m/sec and 300m, respectively. Worn surfaces, wear debris and cross-sections of the worn surfaces were examined with SEM to investigate the wear mechanism of the steel. Hardness of the steel was also evaluated. Wear rate of the steel was correlated with the hardness and the microstructure. On the whole, wear resistance increased with an increase in hardness. However, the pearlite microstructure showed superior wear resistance as compared to the bainite microstructure with a similar hardness. The effect of the microstructure on the wear rate was attributed to the morphological differences of the carbide in the microstructure, which was found to have a significant effect on strain hardening during the wear.
Dry sliding wear behavior of electro-pressure sintered Fe-Ni and Co-Fe-Ni compacts was investigated. Pin-on-disk wear tests were performed on the sintered Fe-Ni, Co-Fe-Ni disk specimens against alumina $(Al_2O_3)$ and silica $(SiO_2)$ ball counterparts at various loads ranging from 3N to 12N. A constant sliding speed of 0.1m/sec was employed. Wear rate was calculated by dividing the weight loss measured after the test by specific gravity and sliding distance. Worn surfaces and cross sections of them were examined by a scanning electron microscopy, and wear mechanism of the compacts was investigated. Wear characteristics of the compacts were discussed as a function of composition of the compacts. Relationship between the wear rate and mechancial properties of the compact was explored, and effects of the oxide layer that was formed on wearing surface of the compacts on the wear were also studied.
($Ti_{1-x}$$Cr_{x}$ )N coatings were deposited by an ion-plating method in a reactor with two separate metal sources, Ti and Cr. Ti was evaporated using an electron beam, while Cr evaporation was carried out by resistant heating. The Ti and Cr concentrations in the coatings were controlled by the Ti and Cr evaporation ratio. The coating hardness increased with increasing the Cr content(x) and showed a maximum value of 6,000 HK at around x=0.8. The critical load of the coatings, measured by the scratch test, was around 30 N. The wear resistance properties of the ($Ti_{1-x}$$Cr_{ x}$)N coatings were evaluated using a CSEM pin-on-disk type tribometer. A Cr-steel ball as well as a SiC ball, which had hardness values of 590 HK and 2,600 HK respectively, were used as the pin. After the wear test, the surface morphology, roughness and the concentration of the coatings were investigated, with the main focus being on the effect of wear debris and the transferred layer on the wear behavior.
High temperature alloy steel such as Ni-Cr-Mo-V material has excellent properties of high strength and high heating resistance. It has been used for several military weapon components such as gun barrel of a warship, turbine rotor and turbine disk for nuclear power plant. Being curious about this material required excellent wear resistance and durability in extreme environmental conditions. A dry wear test at the ambient air and Ar gas conditions in the room temperature were performed in this study. What's more a lubricant wear test at different temperature was conducted. In addition that DLC was coated on Ni-Cr-Mo-V alloy steel substrate with a thickness of $3{\mu}m$, a property of it was compare with lubricant conditions. All the coefficient of friction and wear volume, comparing with DLC coated specimens. The test parameters were selected as follows: 10 N for normal load; 80 rpm for sliding wear speed; and 300 m for the sliding wear distance.
The effect of nitrogen doping on the mechanical and tribological performance of single-layer tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:N) coatings of up to $1{\mu}m$ in thickness was investigated using a custom-made filtered cathode vacuum arc (FCVA). The results obtained revealed that the hardness of the coatings decreased from $65{\pm}4.8GPa$ to $25{\pm}2.4GPa$ with increasing nitrogen gas ratio, which indicates that nitrogen doping occurs through substitution in the $sp^2$ phase. Subsequent AES analysis showed that the N/C ratio in the ta-C:N thick-film coatings ranged from 0.03 to 0.29 and increased with the nitrogen flow rate. Variation in the G-peak positions and I(D)/I(G) ratio exhibit a similar trend. It is concluded from these results that micron-thick ta-C:N films have the potential to be used in a wide range of functional coating applications in electronics. To achieve highly conductive and wear-resistant coatings in system components, the friction and wear performances of the coating were investigated. The tribological behavior of the coating was investigated by sliding an SUJ2 ball over the coating in a ball-on-disk tribo-meter. The experimental results revealed that doping using a high nitrogen gas flow rate improved the wear resistance of the coating, while a low flow rate of 0-10 sccm increased the coefficient of friction (CoF) and wear rate through the generation of hematite (${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$) phases by tribo-chemical reaction. However, the CoF and wear rate dramatically decreased when the nitrogen flow rate was increased to 30-40 sccm, due to the nitrogen inducing phase transformation that produced a graphite-like structure in the coating. The widths of the wear track and wear scar were also observed to decrease with increasing nitrogen flow rate. Moreover, the G-peaks of the wear scar around the SUJ2 ball on the worn surface increased with increasing nitrogen doping.
This study investigated the effects of spray parameters on wear behavior of the Ni-based hard coatings fabricated by thermal spray process. The experiment was designed by an orthogonal array, the Ni-based hard coatings were fabricated according to this experimental design. The wear test was performed on these coatings using ball-on-disk wear tester. The ANOVA was used to analyze the effects of spray parameters on the wear rate of these coatings, as a result, oxygen gas flow and acetylene gas flow were determined as main factors effected on the wear rate. The effects of these two factors on wear behavior were observed by using SEM and EDX.
An experimental study on the effect of silver particles on the sliding behavior of bearing steels was performed by using a ball-on-disk tribometer. Tests were carried out in ambient air, dry and vacuum. Disks of AISI 52100 were silver-coaled by a thermal evaporation method, and the effects of silver particle transfer on friction were firstly analyzed. In order to understand further the mechanism of silver particles transfer and its effect on friction and wear, pre-compressed silver particles were artificially introduced into the friction interface and the results were compared to those of silver-coated specimens. Results showed that the introduced silver particles produced transfer layers and resulted in low friction. It also showed that this low friction is closely related to the characteristic behavior of transfer layers. Shakedown and rachetting occurred at the friction interface and affected the friction and wear.
