Effects of Oxide Layer Formed on TiN Coated Silicon Wafer on the Friction and Wear Characteristics in Sliding (미끄럼운동 시 TiN 코팅에 형성되는 산화막이 마찰 및 마멸 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, the effects of oxide layer farmed on the wear tracks of TiN coated silicon wafer on friction and wear characteristics were investigated. Silicon wafer was used for the substrate of coated disk specimens, which were prepared by depositing TiN coating with 1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in coating thickness. AISI 52100 steel ball was used fur the counterpart. The tests were performed both in air for forming oxide layer on the wear track and in nitrogen to avoid oxidation. This paper reports characterization of the oxide layer effects on friction and wear characteristics using X-ray diffraction(XRD), Auger electron spectroscopy(AES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and multi-mode atomic force microscope(AFM).

  • The effect of silver particles on the sliding behavior of bearing steels was studied experimentally by using a ball-on-disk tribometer. Tests were performed in ambient air, dry air and vacuum. Disks of AISI 52100 were silver-coated by a thermal evaporation method, and the effects of silver particle transfer on friction were analyzed. In order to understand further the mechanism of silver particle transfer and its effect on friction and wear, pre-compressed silver particles were artificially introduced into the friction interface and the results were compared to those of silver-coated specimens. Results showed that the introduced silver particles produced transfer layers and resulted in low friction. It also showed that this low friction is closely related to the characteristic behavior of transfer layers. Shakedown occurred at the friction interface affected the friction and wear.

  • Whenever moving surfaces of machine driving elements interact in air and lubricating oil, oxidization film on the surfaces are generated. It is effect to prevent friction and wear on contact area. Since the electronic current progress the oxidization of metal, if the electronic flow be regulated, the thickness of oxidization film can be regulated and friction characteristics can be improved. But the electronic current can deteriorate friction characteristics, so various characteristics must be investigated on transforming of electronic current. Therefor, using the Norton equation in this study, short current were transformed between frictional materials using ball on disk type tester. It was studied on effect of electronic current for friction characteristics.

  • Small valves including ball valves, gate valves and butterfly valves have been adopted in the fields of steam power generation, petrochemical industry, carriers, and oil tankers. Butterfly valves have normally been applied to fields where in narrow places installing the existing valves such as gate valves and ball valves have proven difficult due to the surrounding area and the heavier of these valves. Butterfly valves are used to control the mass flow of the piping system under low pressure by rotating the circular disk installed inside. The butterfly valve is benefitted by having simpler structure in which the flow is controlled by rotating the disc circular plate along the center axis, whereas the weight of the valve is light compared to the gate valve and ball valve above-mentioned, as there is no additional bracket supporting the valve body. The manufacturing company needs to acquire the performance and life test equipment, in the case of adopting the improving factors to detect leakage and damage on the seat of the valve disc. However, small companies, which are manufacturing the industrial valves, normally sell their products without the life test, which is the reliability test and environment test, because of financial and manpower problems. Furthermore, the failure mode analysis of the products failed in the field is likewise problematic as there is no system collecting the failure data on sites for analyzing the failures of valves. The analyzing and researching process is not arranged systematically because of the financial problem. Therefore this study firstly tried to obtain information about the failure data from the sites, analyzed the failure mode based on the field data collected from the customers, and then obtained field data using measuring equipment. Secondly, we designed and manufactured the performance and life test equipment which also have the real time monitoring system with the naked eye for the butterfly valves. The concept of this equipment can also be adopted by other valves, such as the ball valve, gate valve, and various others. It can be applied to variously sized valves, ranging from 25 mm to large sized valves exceeding 3000 mm. Finally, this study carries out the life test with square wave pressure, using performance and life test equipment. The performance found out that the failures from the real time monitoring system were good. The results of this study can be expanded to the other valves like ball valves, gate valves, and control valves to find out the failure mode using the real time monitoring system for durability and performance tests.

  • Our study is to search for tribological properties of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films as known as anti- wear hard thin film on various polymers. This report deals with the deposition of DLC films on various polymer substrates in vacuum by magnetron radio frequency (RF) sputtering method with using argon plasma and graphite, titanium target. The properties of friction and wear are measured using a ball-on-disk wear -testing machine. The properties of friction and wear have been remarkably improved by DLC coating. Moreover the composition of DLC films has been analyzed by using auger electron spectroscopy(AES). The wear rate of titanium-containing DLC film is lower than that of no-metal-containing DLC film.

The Effect of Hydrogen on the Tribological Properties of Hydrogenated Amorphous Carbon Films

  • Hydrogenated amorphous carbon films were deposited on silicon substrates by using an RF PECVD. The hydrogen/methane ratio was varied from 50% to 88% to study the effect of hytdrogen in the film on the tribological properties. The friction and wear behaviors of the deposited films were investigated by ball-on-disk type wear tester. FT-IR spectra were used to characterize the structure of the films. Tribological properties of carbon films were correlated with their structure such as ratio of "polymer-like" stretching type and that of sp2 bonding. The result showed that the annealing caused a decrease in the amount of wear of contacted $Si_3N_4$ balls and a increase in the coefficient of friction. Possible explanation for annealing effect was discussed by the hydrogen desorption.esorption.

  • In these days, wear resistance is an essential condition because the relative movement between machine parts is being accelerated and those connected with the drive parts transmit power and force. Also wear resistance is closely related to reliability and life of products, therefore the study on friction and wear is very important in many fields. In this paper, wear test was conducted to know properties about friction and wear of manganese phosphate being used widely. Test type is 1 ball on disk and we compared manganese phosphate thin film with non-coated material. Through this study, we could know the effect of this surface treatment method, and then it is assumed that the reliability of parts will be secure.

A Study on the Formation and the Tribological Role of Mass Transfers Layers at Rubbing Silver-coated Surface (은 박막이 코팅된 표면에서 물질전이층의 형성 및 그 트라이볼로지적 역할에 관한 연구)

  • The tribological role of mass transfer layer was studied with silver coatings under various ranges of load and sliding speed. Silver coating was performed with a functionally gradient coating method. Tests were per-formed in dry sliding conditions, using a ball-on-disk contact configuration, at the load of 0.0196-17.64 N and the sliding speed of 20-1,000 mm/s in ambient air. Optical microscope and EPMA analyses showed that contact surfaces were covered with the mass transfer layers of agglomerated wear particles depending upon the contact conditions, and they greatly influenced the tribological characteristics of the surfaces. However, the formation of mass transfer layer was suppressed as the sliding speed increased, and above a critical sliding speed, no mass transfer layer was able to form. For building up a general framework of triboiogical behavior of the coated silver films, all test data were summarized on a map whose axes are contact pressure and sliding speed.

  • A new functionally gradient metal coating method using an atomic mixing technique was developed. In this work the effect of silver atomic mixing on the tribological characteristics of silver$.$ films. has been investigated experimentally. Atomic mixing was implemented by using the, bombardment .of accelerated Ar ions during the thermal evaporation coating process of silver films. Experiments were performed in dry conditions using a ball-on-disk test rig at a load range of 19.6 mN - 17.64 N and a sliding velocity of 20 mm/sec. Results showed that the life of functionally gradient silver coating was enhanced about 100 times more than that of thermally evaporated silver coating and 2 times more than that of IBAD silver coating. The functionally gradient. film also showed low friction and wear compared to those of the evaporated silver and
