  • This paper describes the design and integration of the wind- fuel cell hybrid system. The hybrid system components included a wind turbine, an electrolyzer (for generation of H2), a PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell), storage system and BOP (Balance of Plant) system. The energy input is entirely provided by a wind turbine. A DC-DC converter controls the power input to the electrolyzer, which produces hydrogen and oxygen form water. The hydrogen used the fuel for the PEMFC. The hydrogen is compressed and stored in high pressure tank by hydrogen gas booster system.

  • To operate coal fired power plant efficiently is considered unburned carbon as important factor. But, unburned carbon contents change does not have an impact on Boiler performance simultaneously. we evaluated that unburned carbon contents change had an little influence on unburned carbon loss change for performance side at a real power plant.

  • The main reason to select the maxium plant efficiency through the performance test in fossil power plant is to increase the efficiency of power plant as well as saving energy collated with the policy of government. This study is aimed at unerstanding the variantion trend of efficiency and analyzing the efficiency of boiler and turbine through each of the performance test. Ultimately, the maxium efficiency of power plant will be presented in super-critical pressure type power plant.

Fate and mass balance of pharmaceuticals of unit processes in a sewage treatment plant (하수처리시설 단위공정별 잔류의약물질 거동 및 물질수지 분석)

  • In this study, the fate and removal of 15 pharmaceuticals (including stimulants, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, etc.) in unit processes of a sewage treatment plant (STP) were investigated. Mass loads of pharmaceuticals were 2,598 g/d in the influent, 2,745 g/d in the primary effluent, 143 g/d in the secondary effluent, and 134 g/d in the effluent. The mass loads were reduced by 95% in the biological treatment process, but total phosphorous treatment did not show a significant effect on the removal of most pharmaceuticals. Also, mass balance analysis was performed to evaluate removal characteristics of pharmaceuticals in the biological treatment process. Acetaminophen, caffeine, acetylsalicylic acid, cefradine, and naproxen were efficiently removed in the biological treatment process mainly due to biodegradation. Removal efficiencies of gemfibrozil, ofloxacin, and ciprofloxacin were not high, but their removal was related to sorption onto sludge. This study provides useful information on understanding removal characteristics of pharmaceuticals in unit processes in the STP.

  • The 125kW external reforming (ER) type molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) system for developing a commercial prototype has been operated at Boryeong thermal power plant site since the end of 2009. The system consists of 125kW stack with $10,000 cm^2$ effective area, mechanical balance of plant (MBOP) with anode recycle system, and electrical balance of plant (EBOP). The 125kW MCFC stack installed in December, 2009 has been operated from January, 2010 after 20 days pre-treatment. The stack open circuit voltage (OCV) was 214V at initial load operation, which approaches the thermodynamically theoretical voltage. The stack voltage remained stable range from 160V to 180V at the maximum generating power of 120 kW DC. The stack has been operated for 3,270 hours and operated at rated power for 1,200 hours.

Comparison of nutrient balance and nutrient loading index for cultivated land nutrient management (농경지 양분관리를 위한 양분수지 지표와 양분부하 지표간의 비교)

  • Recently, concerns regarding the environmental impact due to nutrient input in croplands have increased. Therefore, the government is promoting the introduction of a nutrient management system in croplands to solve the problem of excessive nutrient input. This study was carried out to establish nutrient indicators in regional croplands to facilitate the introduction of the national nutrient management system in Korea. The nutrient load and balance indicators for nitrogen and phosphorus were analyzed for nine provinces (Gang-won, Gyeong-gi, Chung-buk, Chung-nam, Jeon-buk, Jeon-nam, Gyeong-buk, Gyeong-nam, and Jeju). In the correlation analysis between the nutrient load and nutrient balance, the correlation coefficient (r) for nitrogen was 0.2504, which was not statistically significant at the 5% significance level. However, the correlation coefficient for phosphorus was 0.7375, which was statistically significant at the 5% significance level. In the nutrient management index, phosphorus showed mutual compatibility between the nutrient load and the nutrient balance indicators, but nitrogen showed no mutual compatibility between the nutrient load and the nutrient balance indicators. Therefore, utilization of the nutrient balance indicator, reflecting the characteristics of the agricultural environment, was more reasonable as a nutrient management index for regional nutrient management.

Empirical Study on Applicability of Phosphorus Recovery Process in Wastewater Treatment Plant (하수처리시설에서 인 회수공정의 도입 가능성에 대한 실증적 검토)

  • In this study, we have made the annual total phosphorus (TP) mass balance diagrams for I wastewater treatment plant by utilizing the data of flow rate and TP of each process and tried to choose the optimum unit process empirically for phosphorus recovery. For the applicability evaluation, we have suggested several quantitative indices of flow rate, TP concentration, TP load and SS. Based on the analyses of TP mass balance, it became clear for reducing TP load of the wastewater treatment plant that it is efficient to recover phosphorus from the side stream in which the amount of flow rate is just 1/16, but TP concentration and load are 78 and 4.8 times larger than those of the influent of the plant. After the detailed applicability evaluation for the side stream, it could be concluded that the unit process of waste activated sludge thickener supernatant or dehydration filtrate are appropriate. Meanwhile, we did fundamental experiments utilizing the dewatering filtrate with TP concentration of 141.5 mg/L. After adjusting pH 10 and $Ca^{2+}$ concentration 250, 500, 1000 mg/L, it was stirred slowly. As a result, the $PO_4-P$ and TP removal efficiencies were above 95 percent; the results of the experiment imply the applicability of phosphorus recovery process in a wastewater treatment plant strongly.

A Study on the Water Quality Management in Fallow Paddy Fields (휴경논에서의 수질관리 연구)

  • Fallow paddy areas have been increased due to the import of cheap agricultural product, and the unbalance between farming cost and rice price since 1990. The increasing fallow paddy area needs to be protected from the devastation by weed breeding for the re-cultivation. In this study, two fallow paddy fields managed with different water depth were selected for monitoring and analysing of water quality, water balance and plant body change. The managed fallow paddy fields were more effective in water quality purification and plants growth control than non-managed fallow paddy fields. And the fallow paddy field managed with some degree of water depth was the most effective field in terms of weed control.

THE PHYSICALLY-BASED SOIL MOISTURE BALANCE MODEL DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATIONS ON PADDY FIELDS

  • This physically-based hydrologic model is developed to calculate the soil-moisture balance on paddy fields. This model consists of three modules; the first is the unsaturated module, the second is the rice evapotranspiration module with SPAC(soil-plant-atmospheric-continuum), and the third is the groundwater and open channel flows based upon the interrehtionship module. The model simulates the hydrlogical processes of infiltration, soil water storage, deep perocolation or echarge to the shallow water table, transpiration and evaporation from the soil surface and also the interrelationship of the groundwater and river flow exchange. To verify the applicability of the developed model, it was applied to the Kimjae Plains, located in the center of the Dongjin river basin in Korea, during the most serious drought season of 1994. The result shows that the estimated water net requirement was 757mm and the water deficit was about 5.9% in this area in 1994. This model can easily evaluate the irrigated water quantity and visualize the common crop demands and soil moisture conditions.

  • For the purpose of increasing compressed air pressure higher than 30bar lightening weight and decreasing installation area of air compressor used for shipboard and industrial power plant it is necessary to arrange its cylinders as a w-type or v-type construction multi-stage compression pro-cess more than two stages and to increase its operation speed higher than 1200rpm In this recip-rocating type air compressor operated in high speed having a crank mechanism and complicate cylinder arrangement there is a vibration problems which can be solved by balancing its recipro-cating parts with balance weight and approriate arranging of cylinder's arrangement angles.
