The luring effect of the sardine bait for octopus pot in laboratory (실험실에서 문어 통발용 정어리 미끼의 유인 효과)

  • This study investigated the luring effect of the sardine bait, which is used to catch octopus with pot, as the preliminary study for the development of alternative bait for octopus pot. The soaking time for bait was divided into "5 days or less" and "11 days or longer" The number of times octopus entered the pot with bait and the empty pot was investigated under dark adaptation and light adaptation processes and the distribution of tank section was investigated under light adaptation process. The case of "11 days or longer" sardine soaking time showed higher rate of distribution in the section of pot with bait compared to the case of "5 days or less" In the case of "5 days or less" soaking time, the number of times the octopus entered the pot with bait was similar to that it entered the pot without it even during dark adaptation and light adaptation. However, in the case of "11 days or longer", the octopus entered the pot with bait more quickly than the pot without bait and more frequently during dark adaptation hours. There were cases where the octopus did not enter any pot. In the case of "5 days or less", with less decomposition of baits, the octopus entered the empty pot more during light adaptation process, and it appeared that the pot was used as a hideout.

  • This study aimed to know the response of deep-sea squid Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis to the light colors of the artificial bait. This experiment used the commercial artificial flashlight baits commonly sold in the fishing shop. The bait has several different light color combinations. The light colors were modified into several light colors by inactivating certain colors and used as treatments. The study is expected to be able to find flashlight bait's most effective color for squid fishing. We applied red-green, green, blue, and commercial bait lights in this study. Each treatment has 3 replications. The effect was expressed as the amount of squid caught. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance. Results showed a significant effect on the number of squid catches. There was significantly different squid catches among the treatments. It indicates that this artificial flashlight bait could be developed to maximize squid catches. This finding can be used for the local fishermen's income and the squid fisheries development.

Identification of Novel Target Proteins of Cyclic GMP Signaling Pathways Using Chemical Proteomics

  • For deciphering the cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) signaling pathway, we employed chemical proteomics to identify the novel target molecules of cGMP. We used cGMP that was immobilized onto agarose beads with linkers directed at three different positions of cGMP. We performed a pull-down assay using the beads as baits on tissue lysates and identified 9 proteins by MALDI-TOF (Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight) mass spectrometry. Some of the identified proteins were previously known cGMP targets, including cGMP-dependent protein kinase and cGMP-stimulated phosphodiesterase. Surprisingly, some of the co-precipitated proteins were never formerly reported to associate with the cGMP signaling pathway. The competition binding assays showed that the interactions are not by nonspecific binding to either the linker or bead itself, but by specific binding to cGMP. Furthermore, we observed that the interactions are highly specific to cGMP against other nucleotides, such as cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and 5'-GMP, which are structurally similar to cGMP. As one of the identified targets, MAPK1 was confirmed by immunoblotting with an anti-MAPK1 antibody. For further proof, we observed that the membrane-permeable cGMP (8-bromo cyclic GMP) stimulated mitogen-activated protein kinase 1 signaling in the treated cells. Our present study suggests that chemical proteomics can be a very useful and powerful technique for identifying the target proteins of small bioactive molecules.

The Biting Behavior of Tuna on Baits (다랑어의 미끼 섭취 습성)

  • The biting behaviors of tuna were studied based on the remains of saury (Cololabis saira), which was used as bait, in the stomach contents of tuna. The saury remains were classified into four segmental groups (A-segment: Whole fish; B-segment: anterior partion with head: C-segment: middlepart without both head and tail: D-segment : posterior part without head). The tuna stomachs were independently named and grouped into three subsamples according to bait segments remaining in the stomach. The subsamples have the extra number of the stomach-naming segments and the distributions of the bait tegments are biased from tile random distribution. The distribution of the bait segments except the extra segments are hypothetically assumed to be random, and was subjected to the chi-square test of significance. The inferred conclusions are as follows:1. Most of the tuna having the B-segment had previously taken the C and/or D-segment. 2. The catchability of the yellowfin tuna having the B-segment seems higher than that of the fish having the A-segment in the stomach. 3. Tuna which had two or more bait heads should have taken the extra bait heads without being hooked detaching the head from the hook by biting the Posterior porting of tile bait.

A Survey on Knowledge, Perception and the Control Management on Cockroaches in Foodservice Institutions (단체급식소에서의 바퀴에 대한 인식도 및 관리실태조사)

  • A study has been performed on the cockroach knowledge and perception of managers, employees and consumers, and the cockroach control management in food service institutions. A total of 759 subjects including 101 managers, 293 employees and 365 consumers was surveyed in Seoul and Pusan areas from July 1994 to September 1994. The results obtained are as follows: The mean rates of the cockroach knowledge (i.e. 62.26/100.0) and perception (i.e. 23.67/30.0) of the consumers were significantly (p<0.001) lower than those of the managers (i.e. 68.87/100.0 and 25.30/30.0, respectively) and the employees (i.e. 69.09/100.0 and 26.99/30.0, respectively). In the cockroach detection rates, however, much higher rate was seen in the consumer group (i.e. 79.5%) than the manager (i.e. 43.3%) and the employee (i.e. 48.5%) groups. Forty and seventy percents of the subjects have suffered from allergies and nuisance by cockroaches, respectively. The cockroach control was performed by 75.5% of the food service institutions and 70.8% of them contracted with pest control operators to reduce the cockroach populations. The cockroach control methods of the operators were aerosol (40.7%) and insecticidal baits (30.5%). Only 33.7% of the institutions had the budgets for the cockroach control. For public health, the managers and the employees of the institutions need to be educated about cockroaches and hygiene. Also, it is suggested that cockroaches be regularly controlled by professional pest control operators.

Composition of Marine Organisms Caught from Lost Plastic Pot and Possibility of Sustainable Ghost Fishing (유실된 플라스틱 붕장어 통발에 어획된 해양 생물의 종류와 지속적인 Ghost Fishing의 가능성)

  • The reason of the loss for the plastic sea-eel pots were estimated as crew's mistake, strong current, bad weather, rough seabed, artificial reef and other boats' fishing. Especially, pot loss happened on the fishing could make some additional catch, loss of the catches and ghost fishing because there are baits and alive fish in the lost pot. Quantity of the lost pots was estimated as 2~4 times of the ordinary usage. On the result of investigation to analyze the possibility of sustainable ghost fishing for the lost pot to feed the fishes at anytime because there were blenny, silver whiting, bar-tailed flathead and shrimp including sea-eel in the lost pot. In the bioeconomic point, ghost fishing is competitive with the general fishing. Accordingly, usage of biodegradable plastic material for the plastic sea-eel pot will be better to reduce ghost fishing

  • The behavior of crab, Charybdis japonica h. Milne EDWARDS, to the net pots with baits was investigated alternately in the experimental tanks. One of the pots being dropped on the tank bottom, the crabs touched it to obtain the bait probably reacted by their senses of smell and sight, and increased gradually in the number of touch to show a maximum within 30 min. The crabs, if touched circular pots, were guided more easily to the pot entrances than the case of touching square ones, but the guidance from the vicinity of the entrances into the pots was easier in the square. When the crabs entered the pots, they always showed a sharp precaution. However, most of enterings were made mainly within 30 minutes and easier in pots with lower entrances. If 30 min. elapsed, the entering was little made by the decrease in the number of touch and the getting-out was remarkable, especially in pots with low entrances. But, in all the pots the getting-out was hampered by the drawing of the entrance tips into the pots. In case in which flappers were attached to the entrance tips, the entering was very hampered, hut the getting-out was not shown.

The effect of the entrance size on the catch of trap for conger eel (스프링식 붕장어그물통발의 어획성능에 미치는 입구크기의 영향)

  • Recently, Fishermen have required to expand the circumference of trap entrance for conger eel because it was difficult to take the catch out as well as to put the baits into. A series of fishing experiments was carried out in coastal areas of Tongyoung, Korea in 2008 and 2009 using the traps to describe the effect of the entrance size on the catch. The experimental traps (five types) were used in filed experiments with four types circumference size traps (140, 180, 220 and 260mm) with mesh size 22mm and another type was used the same one usually using in filed with mesh size 35mm (750mm circumference). The experiment results were, the conger eels of total length 35mm more or so were caught 85, 93, 142 and 176 individual by the experiment traps with mesh size 22mm as increase circumference size from 140mm to 260mm, respectively. And the small conger eels of the total length below 35mm to be prohibited to catch by law were caught 145, 160, 288 and 304 individual according to increase the circumference size of trap, respectively. In addition, in case of the trap with mesh size 22mm, bycatches were 230 - 260 individuals and much more than bycatches of the trap with mesh size 35mm. In conclusion, when we expand the circumference size of trap according to fishermen's requirement, we should review not only economic of fishery but also increasement the bycatch of non-target fishes and small size fishes.

A study of the sinking speed of longlines influenced by bait properties and anchor weights (연승의 침강속도에 영향을 미치는 미끼의 특성과 앵커 무게에 관한 연구)

  • The paper presents investigations on to which degree the sinking speed of longlines is influenced by type of bait, bait sinking orientations and anchor weights. The main aim of this study is to obtain further insight in the ocean current displacement phenomena in demersal longlining. The sinking speed is one of the main factors deciding the current displacement. In an ongoing project, sinking speed experiments with longlines with 6 kg and 10 kg anchor weights have been carried out in the Trondheim fjord. The longlines used in the first experiments were rigged without bait and hook. The results of these experiments with two different anchor weights have revealed only a slight difference in the sinking speed, except for the part near to the anchors, even though the sinking speed of longlines in general is supposed to be much influenced by the anchor weights. The reason for the obtained result is supposed to be that the experiments have been carried out at relative shallow waters. Further studies have included bait sinking experiments in the flume tank. The experiments showed that the drag coefficient of "fillet type (flat)" bait varied from 0.763 to 1.735, while it for "elliptic type" bait varied from 0.62 to 1.483. Other activities have included calculation of the sinking speed of longlines as a function of the established resistance coefficients of bait of various shape and size for commercial longlining. The calculated sinking speed of a longline with the fillet type bait was found to be 12.4 to 16.5% lower than for a longline without bait.

The Association between Food Group Consumption Patterns and Early Metabolic Syndrome Risk in Non-Diabetic Healthy People

  • We investigated the association between dietary habits/food group consumption patterns and early risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS), a main cause for metabolic disease. Study participants were recruited from the health promotion center in Dong-A University Hospital and public advertisement. Study subjects (n = 243, 21-80 years) were categorized into three groups: Super-healthy (MetS risk factor [MetS RF] = 0, n = 111), MetS-risk carriers (MetS RF = 1-2, n = 96), and MetS (MetS $RF{\geq}3$, n = 27). Higher regularity in dietary habits (breakfast-everyday, regular eating time, non-frequent overeating, and non-frequent eating-out) was observed in the Super-healthy group than in the MetS-risk carriers, and particularly in the MetS subjects. The relationship between food group consumption patterns and MetS-risk related parameters were investigated with adjustment for confounding factors. Fruit consumption was positively associated with HDL-cholesterol, and tended to be negatively associated with waist circumference, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, and insulin resistance (IR). The consumption of low-fat meats and fish, and vegetables was negatively associated with hs-CRP. Specifically, the consumption of seafoods belonging to the low-fat fish was negatively associated with fasting glucose, hs-CRP, and interleukin (IL)-6. Anchovy/dried white baits consumption was negatively associated with fasting insulin and IR. Green-yellow vegetables consumption was negatively associated with fasting insulin, IR, and hs-CRP. On the other hand, sugars and fast-foods were positively associated with LDL-cholesterol. Additionally, fast-foods consumption was positively associated with hs-CRP and IL-6 levels. In conclusion, dietary habits/food group consumption patterns are closely associated with MetS-risk related parameters in Koreans. It may suggest useful information to educate people to properly select healthy foods for early prevention of MetS.
