  • Harmful algal blooms (HABs), commonly known as red tides, are aquatic phenomena caused by the rapid growth and accumulation of certain microalgae, which can lead to marked discoloration of surface waters, and severe impacts on public health, commerce, and the environment. In South Korea, the red tides have been a serious and recurrent problem, especially along the south coast. Plenty of yellow loess was used to control an outbreak of the red tides for 15 years from 1996 until now. Yellow loess was almost sprayed in the vicinity of a large fish farming industry. In this research, the distribution characteristics and density distribution of zooplankton were investigated in autumn (Oct. 2008) and spring (Apr. 2009) using volume backscattering strength (SV) calculated by the zooplankton collected with north pacific standard (NORPAC) net and the echo intensity measured with ADCP at stations on the study area in the spraying ocean of yellow loess (SOYL), and the non-spraying ocean of yellow ocean (NOYL) by the red tide generating every year. The species number and the individuals per unit volume of the zooplankton collected in NOYL was high and it which was collected in SOYL was low. As a result of comparing the volume backscattering strength ($SV_c$) calculated by species and length of the zooplankton collected with NORPAC net with the volume backscattering strength ($SV_m$) calculated by the echo intensity measured with ADCP at stations on the study area, although $SV_c$ and $SV_m$ of NOYL were generally in agreement, $SV_m$ of SOYL was higher than $SV_c$ 4.3dB, i.e. ADCP is greatly influenced by suspended solid in SOYL. The horizontal distribution map of $SV_m$ at the study area in autumn (Oct. 2008) and spring (Apr. 2009) was drawn. $SV_m$ of SOYL is higher than NOYL and autumn is higher than spring. $SV_m$ can suppress the overestimate or underestimate of $SV_c$.

  • The objective of this study was to monitor and evaluate the schooling characteristics, including the distribution density (volume backscattering strength) and acoustic size (target strength), of commercially valuable species swimming in response to artificial reefs installed at Suyeong Man, Busan, Korea. Fish aggregations at two artificial reef areas and at a nearby natural rocky reef habitat were recorded and analyzed using a 70 kHz split-beam echo sounder and 330 kHz side-scan sonar from August to September, 2006. An underwater CCTV camera system was also used to observe marine organisms in physical contact with and swimming very close to artificial reefs. During the acoustic observations at three reef sites, useful information about schooling characteristics of fish aggregations responding to artificial reefs were obtained, but more trials are needed to confirm significant differences in schooling behavior and geographical distributions in areas containing natural reef structures and artificial reefs.

  • Vibration-based monitoring is one approach used to perform structural condition assessment. By measuring structural response, such as displacement, dynamic characteristics of a structure may be estimated. Often, the primary dynamic responses in civil structures are below 5 Hz, making accurate low frequency measurement critical for successful dynamic characterization. In addition, static deflection measurements are useful for structural capacity and load rating assessments. This paper presents a DC coupled continuous wave radar to accurately detect both dynamic and static displacement. This low-cost radar sensor provides displacement measurements within a compact, wireless unit appropriate for a range of structural monitoring applications. The hardware components and operating mechanism of the radar are introduced and a series of laboratory experiments are presented to assess the performance characteristics of the radar. The laboratory and field experiments investigate the effect of factors such as target distance, motion amplitude, and motion frequency on the radar's measurement accuracy. The results demonstrate that the radar is capable of both static and dynamic displacement measurements with sub-millimeter accuracy, making it a promising technology for structural health monitoring.

  • Diffusion of Cu into the low-k para-xylene based plasma polymer (pXPP) thin films deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition using the para-xylene precursor was comparatively measured using various methods. Cu layer was deposited on the surfaces of pXPPs treated by $N_2$ plasma generated in a magnetically enhanced inductively coupled plasma reactor. Diffusion characteristics of Cu into pXPPs were measured using Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM), and current-voltage (I-V) measurements for the vacuum-annealed Cu/pXPPs for 1 hour at $450^{\circ}C$ and were compared. The results showed a correlation between the I-V measurement and SIMS data are correlated and have a sensitivity enough to evaluate the dielectric properties but the RBS or XTEM measurements are not sufficient to conclude the electrical properties of low-k dielectrics with Cu in the film bulk. The additional results indicate that the pXPP layers are quite resistant to Cu diffusion at the annealing temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ compared to the other previously reported organic low-k materials.

  • The Compton backscatter technique has been applied to lap-joint in aircraft structure in order to determine mass loss due to exfoliative corrosion of the aluminum alloy sheet skin. The mass loss of each layer has been estimated from Compton backscatter A-scan including the aluminum sheet, the corrosion layer, and the sealant. A Compton backscattering imaging system has been also developed to obtain a cross-sectional profile of corroded lap-splices of aging aircraft using a specially designed slit-type camera. The camera is to focus on a small scattering volume inside the material from which the backscattered photons are collected by a collimated scintillator detector for interpretation of material characteristics. The cross section of the layered structure is scanned by moving the scattering volume through the thickness direction of the specimen. The theoretical model of the Compton scattering based on Boltzmann transport theory is presented for quantitative characterization of exfoliative corrosion through deconvolution procedure using a nonlinear least-square error minimization method. It produces practical information such as location and width of planar corrosion in layered structures of aircraft, which generally cannot be detected by conventional NDE techniques such as the ultrasonic method.

  • Superluminescent diodes(SLDs) are the optimum light sources for application in optical measurement systems such as fiber gyroscopes, optical time domain reflectometers, and to short and medium distance optical communication systems. The broadband characteristics of SLDs reduce Rayleigh backscattering noise, polarization noise, and the bias offset due to the nonlinear Kerr effect in fiber gyro systems. In this paper, in order to suppress lasing oscillation, we introduced a laterally tilted SCH(Separate Confinement Heterostructure)-SLD with a window region. An output power of 11mW has been achieved at 200mA injection current at 25$^{\circ}C$. At 120mA, parallel and perpendicular to the junction were 31$^{\circ}$${\times}$38$^{\circ}$.

  • Tantalum pentoxide (Ta$_2$O$\sub$5/) is a candidate for use in metal-insulator-metal diode in switching devices for active-matrix liquid-crystal displays. The MIM diode with very low threshold voltage and perfect symmetry was fabricated. High quality Ta$_2$O$\sub$5/ thin films were obtained by using an anodizing method. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope observations, auger electron spectroscopy, ellipsometry measurements, and electrical measurements, such as current - voltage(I-V) measurements were performed to investigate Ta$_2$O$\sub$5/ films and their reliability and indicated that the obtained TaOx thin films were reliable Ta$_2$O$\sub$5/ films for the applications. Furthermore, in this paper, we discuss the effects of top-electrode metals and annealing conditions. The conduction mechanism of the leakage current and the symmetry characteristics related to the Schottky emission and Poole-Frankel effect are also discussed using the results of electrical measurements and conduction barrier theory.

  • Acoustical backscattering characteristics of Japanese anchovy can be estimated by Kirchhoffray mode model (KRM model) due to estimate exact body and swim-bladder shape of the fish, the samples were rapidly frozen by dry-ice and alcohol. X-ray photos for ventral and lateral direction for 6 samples were taken and the 3D coordinates of the body swim-bladder were estimated by digitizing from the photos. The angles between the axis of body and swim-bladder were about $9^{\circ}$ at 38kHz and $7^{\circ}$ at 120kHz, 200kHz. General formula of TS and BL estimated were < $TS_{38kHz}$ >=20logBL-67.3, < $TS_{120kHz}$ >=20logBL-66.6, < $TS_{200kHz}$ >=20logBL-67.0. As a result, we confirmed KRM model is very useful to estimate TS (Target Strength) for design of experiment and it also can be applied to estimate the abundance of Japanese anchovy distributed by 2 frequency difference method in the survey area.

  • Damage induced by Si ion implantation and its annealing behavior during rapid thermal annealing were investigated by cross-sectional TEM (transmission electron microscopy) and RB ( Rutherford backscattering) spectrum. 150keV and 50keV Si ions were implanted in Si (100) at room temperature with doses of 2${\times}10^{15}cm^{-2}$. And 100keV Si ions were implanted in Si with doses from 1${\times}10^{14}cm^{-2}$. A variety of damage structures were generated by Si ion implantation such as continuous amorphous layer extending to the surface buried amorphous layer and damage clusters. Damage clusters are annealed out at the lower annealing temperature of 550 $^{\circ}C$. However, event at the temperature of 110$0^{\circ}C$ end of range loops remain in the original lower amorphous/crystal interface in the case of continuous and buried amorphous layer formation. Extended defects in the shape of zipper dislocations are also observed at the middle of the recrystallized region in the buried amorphous layer.
