Soybean has widely grown for its edible bean which has numerous uses. Microwave remote sensing has a great potential over the conventional remote sensing with the visible and infrared spectra due to its all-weather day-and-night imaging capabilities. In this investigation, a ground-based polarimetric scatterometer operating at multiple frequencies was used to continuously monitor the crop conditions of a soybean field. Polarimetric backscatter data at L, C, and X-bands were acquired every 10 minutes on the microwave observations at various soybean stages. The polarimetric scatterometer consists of a vector network analyzer, a microwave switch, radio frequency cables, power unit and a personal computer. The polarimetric scatterometer components were installed inside an air-conditioned shelter to maintain constant temperature and humidity during the data acquisition period. The backscattering coefficients were calculated from the measured data at incidence angle $40^{\circ}$ and full polarization (HH, VV, HV, VH) by applying the radar equation. The soybean growth data such as leaf area index (LAI), plant height, fresh and dry weight, vegetation water content and pod weight were measured periodically throughout the growth season. We measured the temporal variations of backscattering coefficients of the soybean crop at L, C, and X-bands during a soybean growth period. In the three bands, VV-polarized backscattering coefficients were higher than HH-polarized backscattering coefficients until mid-June, and thereafter HH-polarized backscattering coefficients were higher than VV-, HV-polarized back scattering coefficients. However, the cross-over stage (HH > VV) was different for each frequency: DOY 200 for L-band and DOY 210 for both C and X-bands. The temporal trend of the backscattering coefficients for all bands agreed with the soybean growth data such as LAI, dry weight and plant height; i.e., increased until about DOY 271 and decreased afterward. We plotted the relationship between the backscattering coefficients with three bands and soybean growth parameters. The growth parameters were highly correlated with HH-polarization at L-band (over r=0.92).

The evaluation methods of the splicing loss in attenuation characteristics of optical fiber were measured and analyzed presently, the splicing loss of single mode optical fiber is measured by the cut-back technique and the backscattering technique. Comparing the splicing loss measured by above two technique, evaluation method of splicing loss measured by backscattering technique (OTDR) shall be calculated by the splicing loss is occurred due to difference of the backscattering coefficient in the spliced fibers. Thus. this analysis of the splicing loss is certainly applied in installation of the optical fiber cables for management of the data.
Acoustic backscattering from a buble column in water was studied theoretically and experimentally. For theoretical analysis a general scattering theory was used by assuming the bubble column to be lumped element scatterer which can be characterized by its shape, void fraction and dimensions. When the void fraction is less than 1% and the incident frequency is higher than individual bubble resonance frequencies, the experimental results show that the acoustic backscattering from a bubble column depends mainly on the void fraction rather than the individual bubble sizes. It was also theoretically and experimentally observed that the acoustic backscattering levels were increased and their peaks moved to the lower frequency regin by raising the void fraction of bubble column.
For estimation of three inherent optical properties (IOPs), the absorption coefficients for phytoplankton ($a_{ph}$) and suspended solid particle ($a_{ss}$) and dissolved organic matter ($a_{dom}$), from ocean reflectance, we used inversion of remote sensing reflectance model (Ahn et al., 2001) at this study. The IOP inversion model assumes that (1) the relationship between remote sensing reflectance ($R_{rs}$) and absorption (a) and backscattering ($b_{b}$) is well known, (2) the optical coefficients for pure water ($a_{w}$, $b_{bw}$) are known, (3) the spectral shapes of the specific absorption coefficients for phytoplankton ($a^*_{ph}$) and suspended solid particle ($a^*_{ss}$) and the specific backscattering coefficients for phytoplankton ($b_b^*_{ph}$) and suspended solid particle ($b_b^*_{ss}$) are known. The input data of IOP inversion model is used in-situ ocean optical data at the seawater around the Korea Peninsula for 5 years (2001-2005). We compared the output data of the IOP inversion model and the in-situ observation for seawater around the Korea Peninsula.
Whereas it is well known that the surface roughness parameters, the RMS height and the correlation length, of a natural soil surface are underestimated with a short surface profile, it is not clear how much the underestimated surface parameters affect the backscattering coefficients of the surface for various incidence angles and polarizations. The backscattering coefficients of simulated and measured surface profiles are computed using the integral equation method (IEM) and analyzed in this paper to answer this question. It is shown that the RMS error of the backscattering coefficients between 5-m- and 1-m-long measured surface profiles is 1.7 dB for vv-polarization and 0.5 dB for hh-polarization at a medium range of incidence angle ($15^{\circ}{\leq}{\theta}{\leq}70^{\circ}$), while the surface roughness parameters are significantly reduced; from 2.4 cm to 1.5 cm for the RMS height s and from 35.1 cm to 10.0 cm for the autocorrelation length l. This result is verified with numerous simulations with various roughness conditions and various wavelengths.

Species identification in hydroacoustic survey is one of the key requirements to estimate biomass of organism and to understand the structure of zooplankton community. Feasibility of species identification using two frequencies (38 and 120 kHz) was investigated on the basis of mean volume backscattering strength difference (MVBS). Virtual echogram technique was applied to two frequencies data sets that obtained from surveys in the Antarctic Ocean and Yellow Sea. Virtual echogram method using MVBS revealed the possibility of species identification, which species identification relying on visual scrutiny of single frequency acoustic data resulted in significant errors in biomass estimation. Through noise cancellation using MVBS, much of the acoustic noise caused by acoustic instruments could be removed in new virtual echogram, and the biomass estimation and data quality was improved.
This study proposes an inversion algorithm to extract the surface parameters, such as surface roughness and soil moisture contents, using multi-frequency SAR data. The study areas include the tidal flats of Jebu Island and the reclaimed lands of Hwaong district on the western coasts of the Korean peninsula. SAR data of three frequencies were accordingly calibrated to provide precise backscattering coefficients through absolute radiometric calibration. The root mean square (RMS) height and the correlation length, which can describe the surface roughness, were extracted from the backscattering coefficients using the inversion of the Integral Equation Method (IEM). The IEM model was appropriately modified to accommodate the environmental conditions of tidal flats. Volumetric soil moisture was also simultaneously extracted from the dielectric constant using the empirical model, which define the relations between volumetric soil moistures and dielectric constants. The results obtained from the proposed algorithm were verified with the in-situ measurements, and we confirmed that multi-frequency SAR observations combined with the surface scattering model for tidal flats can be used to quantitatively retrieve the geophysical surface parameters in tidal flats.

A technique to obtain an exact frequency characteristics of desired targets in radar measurements is presented. The pulsing network composed of two RF switches was installed between the Network Analyzer and the antenna, and the backscattering from a metal sphere was measured at X-band. It is shown that the pulsing effectively eliminated undesired returns from antenna and other circuitry of the systems. The antenna return was suppressed by more than 60 dB, and the signal-to-noise ratio was improved drastically. The pulsed frequency data were processed to extract the responses of the desired target. The result agrees well with the theoretical backscattering characteristics of the sphere. The methods presented here are applicable to RCS measurements in compact ranges, and also to the backscattering measurements of distributed targets outdoors.
Sea surface backscattering signal measurements were conducted in the shallow waters off the east coast of Korea to study the acoustic wave scattering from the sea surface. The grazing angles of wave range from 20° to 40° with a frequency of 60 kHz. The wind speed and surface roughness of the experiment area were 3 m/os and below 1 m, respectively. The measured acoustic backscattering strengths greatly exceed the composite roughness predictions at low grazing angles. To account for this discrepancy, the scattering strengths due to a near-surface bubble layer were considered. The prediction with bubble contribution was found to be in good agreement with the experimental measurement.

Fluctuation statistics of scattering strength are not only important because they impact the performance of active sonar systems, but also because they may provide insight into the major scattering process. In this article, analysis of the statistical characteristics of bottom backscattering, measured in shallow water, are presented. The slowly moving experimental sonar was operated at 30kHz to gather data over the bottom. Spatial and temporal correlation functions of the signal amplitudes were measured. The distribution function and probability of false alarm function of the detected envelope of widebeam and narrowbeam signals were measured. An attempt was made to compare the results with existing theoretical models. The result suggests that the statistical characteristics of bottom backscattering fluctuation of moving source is differ from that of fixed source.
