  • In this paper, four different data mining techniques, two neural networks and two statistical modeling techniques, are compared in terms of prediction accuracy in the context of bankruptcy prediction. In business setting, how to accurately detect the condition of a firm has been an important event in the literature. In neural networks, Backpropagation (BP) network and the Kohonen self-organizing feature map, are selected and compared each other while in statistical modeling techniques, discriminant analysis and logistic regression are also performed to provide performance benchmarks for the neural network experiment. The findings suggest that the BP network is a better choice among the data mining tools compared. This paper also identified some distinctive characteristics of Kohonen self-organizing feature map.

  • Effective identification of wireless channel in different scenarios or regions can solve the problems of multipath interference in process of wireless communication. In this paper, different characteristics of wireless channel are extracted based on the arrival time and received signal strength, such as the number of multipath, time delay and delay spread, to establish the feature vector set of wireless channel which is used to train backpropagation (BP) neural network to identify different wireless channels. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can accurately identify different wireless channels, and the accuracy can reach 97.59%.

  • In this paper, ECG based cardiac disease diagnosis models are developed. Conventionally, ECG monitoring equipments can only measure and store ECG signals and they always require medical doctor's diagnosis actions which are not desirable for continuous ambulatory monitoring and diagnosis healthcare systems. In this paper, two kinds of neural based self cardiac disease diagnosis engines are developed and tested for four kinds of diseases, sinus bradycardia, sinus tachycardia, left bundle branch block and right bundle branch block. For diagnosis engines, error backpropagation neural network (BP) and probabilistic neural network (PNN) were applied. Five signal features including heart rate, QRS interval, PR interval, QT interval, and T wave types were selected for diagnosis characteristics. To show the validity of proposed diagnosis engine, MIT-BIH database were used to test. Test results showed that BP based diagnosis engine has 71% of diagnosis accuracy which is superior to accuracy of PNN based diagnosis engine. However, PNN based diagnosis engine showed superior diagnosis accuracy for complex-disease diagnoses than BP based diagnosis engine.

  • An inverse kinematic solution of a robot manipulator using multilayer perceptrons is proposed. Neural networks allow the solution of some complex nonlinear equations such as the inverse kinematics of a robot manipulator without the need for its model. However, the back-propagation (BP) learning rule for multilayer perceptrons has the major limitation of being too slow in learning to be practical. In this paper, a new algorithm named Dynamically Reconfiguring BP is proposed to improve its learning speed. It uses a modified version of Kohonen's Self-Organizing Feature Map (SOFM) to partition the input space and for each input point, select a subset of the hidden processing elements or neurons. A subset of the original network results from these selected neuron which learns the desired mapping for this small input region. It is this selective property that accelerates convergence as well as enhances resolution. This network was used to learn the parity function and further, to solve the inverse kinematic problem of a robot manipulator. The results demonstrate faster learning than the BP network.

  • In the paper, we proposed a face recognition method that uses GA-BP(Genetic Algorithm-Back propagation Network) that optimizes initial parameters such as bias values or weights. Each pixel in the picture is used for input of the neuralnetwork. The initial weights of neural network is consist of fixed-point real values and converted to bit string on purpose of using the individuals that arte expressed in the Genetic Algorithm. For the fitness value, we defined the value that shows the lowest error of neural network, which is evaluated using newly defined adaptive re-learning operator and built the optimized and most advanced neural network. Then we made experiments on the face recognition. In comparison with learning convergence speed, the proposed algorithm shows faster convergence speed than solo executed back propagation algorithm and provides better performance, about 2.9% in proposed method than solo executed back propagation algorithm.

  • The relationships among multi-dimensional data (such as medical examination data) with ambiguity and variation are difficult to explore. The traditional approach to building a data classification system requires the formulation of rules by which the input data can be analyzed. The formulation of such rules is very difficult with large sets of input data. This paper first describes two classification approaches using back-propagation (BP) neural network and Mahalanobis distance (MD) classifier, and then proposes two classification approaches for multi-dimensional feature selection. The first one proposed is a feature selection procedure from the trained back-propagation (BP) neural network. The basic idea of this procedure is to compare the multiplication weights between input and hidden layer and hidden and output layer. In order to simplify the structure, only the multiplication weights of large absolute values are used. The second approach is Mahalanobis-Taguchi system (MTS) originally suggested by Dr. Taguchi. The MTS performs Taguchi's fractional factorial design based on the Mahalanobis distance as a performance metric. We combine the automatic thresholding with MD: it can deal with a reduced model, which is the focus of this paper In this work, two case studies will be used as examples to compare and discuss the complete and reduced models employing BP neural network and MD classifier. The implementation results show that proposed approaches are effective and powerful for the classification.
