Wide Color Gamut Backlight from Three-band White LED

  • A Wide Color Gamut Backlight system was studied using a three-band white Light-Emitting Diode. A three-band white light-emitting diode (LED) was fabricated using an InGaN-based blue LED chip that emits 445-nm blue peak, and a green phosphor and red phosphor that emit 535-nm green and 621-nm red peak emissions, respectively, when excited by 450-nm blue light. Using for this three-band white LED, wide color gamut backlight unit (BLU) was attained. The luminance of BLU and CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinates was $1,700Cd/m^2$ and (0.337, 0.346). Color filter matching simulations for this configuration show that the three-band white LED backlight can be enhanced by up to 16% over conventional white LED backlight color gamut.

LED TV 백라이트 소비전력 저감을 위한 스마트 디밍 알고리즘 개발 (Smart Dimming Control Algorithm for Reducing Power Consumption of LED TV Backlight)

  • In this paper, the new smart dimming algorithm which is mixed with PWM and PAM control method is proposed for reducing the power consumption of LED TV Backlight. The proposed technique is using the curve characteristics of LED forward voltage and current which is proportionally changing LED forward voltage as changing LED forward current. Therefore, each PWM and PAM control method has different LED forward voltage and current in the same brightness condition. The PWM control method adjusts the brightness of LED TV Backlight by only varying the duty ratio of PWM and constantly sustaining the amplitude of LED forward current and voltage. So, the level of LED forward current and voltage in the PWM control method is relatively high and constant regardless of duty ratio of PWM. On the other hand, the PAM control method adjusts the brightness of LED TV Backlight by directly varying the level of LED forward current. So, the level of LED forward current and voltage in the PAM control method is lowered according to the brightness level. For the above-mentioned reason, the PAM control method has the advantage of reducing the total power consumption of LED TV Backlight at the brightness condition of below 100%, compared with PWM control method. By implementing this characteristic to LED driver circuit with control algorithm in MCU, the power consumption of LED TV Backlight can expect to be reduced. The effectiveness of the proposed method, new smart dimming algorithm, CPWAM(=Conditional Pulse Width Amplitude Modulation), has been verified by experimental results.

  • LCD TV의 슬림화를 위한 전원장치는 고효율 및 고전력 밀도를 요구하고 있다. 최근 LCD TV의 LED 백라이트는 소비전력이 매우 적고 수명이 반영구적이며 밝기가 뛰어나는 동시에 기존의 CCFL 보다 적은 공간을 차지해서 두께를 혁신적으로 줄일 수 있는 장점을 지니고 있다. 그리고 본 논문에서는 LED 백라이트 구동용 고주파 평판형 트랜스포머를 이용하여 LLC 공진컨버터를 제안 적용하였고 실험 결과에 대하여 서술한다.

  • LCD (liquid crystal display) industry is needed to goods of high reliability and is interested in products without harmful material. In this experiment, we made the LED backlight unit for Automotive-navigation. And for making this backlight unit we used to eight side emitting type white LEDs with 1 W high power of the lumileds company. We could know that this backlight unit releases to 6500 nit in 14 W power consumption and start up voltage time is under the 15ms in the ambient temperature $-20\;^{\circ}C$.

  • The LCD backlight technique using light-emitting diode(LED) has been studied in the recent backlight market. The white light is need for LCD backlight and it is generally implemented by combining the RGB-LEDs to obtain the high brightness. However, RGB-LEDs have different color characteristics for the current and temperature variations, which results in the color shift problem. The color shift characteristics of RGB-LEDs for the current and temperature variations are investigated in this paper. This result can be used to control the color of backlight system using RGB-LEDs.

  • A direct-lit liquid crystal display that does not use color filters is proposed. A backlight unit that employs compartmentalized RGB LED and lenticular-lens arrays is used instead of color filters to direct the RGB LED lights into the RGB subpixels. The color-filterless LED backlight design, simulation, and experiment results are presented.

  • In this paper, we present an algorithm for efficient control of backlight LED in order to reduce the power consumption of LCD TV. In addition, a pragmatic implementation method is presented. In conventional local dimming control, backlight LEDs of LCD TV are divided into $M{\times}N$ blocks. And, the proper luminance for each block is computed according to input image and used for dimming control. But, LED light of each block is diffused and affects the neighboring blocks, so that luminance of each block becomes larger than that of intent. In the proposed algorithm, dimming control values are reduced by the amount of quantity affected by the neighboring blocks using light spread function, resulting in additional reduction of power consumption.

  • 적, 녹, 청색 3파장 LED를 적용한 LCD 백라이트 조명은 백색 LED를 적용한 것에 비해 넓은 색재현성과 LCD 투과율을 실현할 수 있으나, 온도 변화에 따른 휘도 저하와 색좌표 변동 문제 등의 신뢰성을 확보하지 않으면 안된다. 본 논문에서는 정전류 전원을 사용하는 소형 3파장 LED 백라이트 조명에 온도 보상 소자로서 써미스터를 사용한 저가형 온도 보상 장치에 대해 소개하고, 설계 및 실험 결과를 나타내었다. 이 방법에 의해 휘도 저하율을 54% 개선하였고, 색좌표 변동율을 51% 줄일 수 있었다.
