Edges are a robust feature for object detection. In this paper, we present an edge-based background modeling method for the detection of moving objects. The edges in the image frames were mapped using robust Canny edge detector. Two edge maps were created and combined to calculate the ultimate moving-edge map. By selecting all the edge pixels of the current frame above the defined threshold of the ultimate moving edges, a temporary background-edge map was created. If the frequencies of the temporary background edge pixels for several frames were above the threshold, then those edge pixels were treated as background edge pixels. We conducted a performance comparison with previous works. The existing edge-based moving-object detection algorithms pose some difficulty due to the changes in background motion, object shape, illumination variation, and noises. The result of the performance evaluation shows that the proposed algorithm can detect moving objects efficiently in real-world scenarios.

This paper presents an background edge generation based automatic algorithm for detection of moving objects under moving camera. Background image is generated by rotating the fixed the camera on the tripod horizontally, aligning and reorganizing this images. We develop an efficient approach for robust panoramic background edge generation as well as method of edge matching between input image and background image. We applied the proposed algorithm to real image sequences. The proposed method can be successfully realized in various monitoring systems like intrusion detection as well as video surveillance.
In this paper, we propose a background segmentation method in low resolution color image. A segmentation algorithm is based on color and edge information. In edge image, adaptive and local thresholds are applied to suppress paint boundaries. Through our experiments, the proposed algorithm efficiently segments background from objects.

We propose a simple method for tracking a nonparameterized subject contour in a single video stream with a moving camera and changing background. Then we present a method to eliminate the tracked contour object by replacing with the background scene we get from other frame. First we track the object using LOD (Level-of-Detail) canny edge maps, then we generate background of each image frame and replace the tracked object in a scene by a background image from other frame that is not occluded by the tracked object. Our tracking method is based on level-of-detail (LOD) modified Canny edge maps and graph-based routing operations on the LOD maps. We get more edge pixels along LOD hierarchy. Our accurate tracking is based on reducing effects from irrelevant edges by selecting the stronger edge pixels, thereby relying on the current frame edge pixel as much as possible. The first frame background scene is determined by camera motion, camera movement between two image frames, and other background scenes are computed from the previous background scenes. The computed background scenes are used to eliminate the tracked object from the scene. In order to remove the tracked object, we generate approximated background for the first frame. Background images for subsequent frames are based on the first frame background or previous frame images. This approach is based on computing camera motion. Our experimental results show that our method works nice for moderate camera movement with small object shape changes.

We propose a simple method for tracking a nonparameterized subject contour in a single video stream with a moving camera and changing background. Then we present a method to eliminate the tracked contour object by replacing with the background scene we get from other frame. Our method consists of two parts: first we track the object using LOD (Level-of-Detail) canny edge maps, then we generate background of each image frame and replace the tracked object in a scene by a background image from other frame that is not occluded by the tracked object. Our tracking method is based on level-of-detail (LOD) modified Canny edge maps and graph-based routing operations on the LOD maps. To reduce side-effects because of irrelevant edges, we start our basic tracking by using strong Canny edges generated from large image intensity gradients of an input image. We get more edge pixels along LOD hierarchy. LOD Canny edge pixels become nodes in routing, and LOD values of adjacent edge pixels determine routing costs between the nodes. We find the best route to follow Canny edge pixels favoring stronger Canny edge pixels. Our accurate tracking is based on reducing effects from irrelevant edges by selecting the stronger edge pixels, thereby relying on the current frame edge pixel as much as possible. This approach is based on computing camera motion. Our experimental results show that our method works nice for moderate camera movement with small object shape changes.

The objective of this research is to detect the papaya fruits on tree in an orchard. The detection of papaya on natural background is difficult because colors of fruits and background such as leaves are similarly green. We cannot separate it from leaves by color information. Therefore, this research will use shape information instead. First, we detect an interested object by detecting its boundary using edge detection technique. However, the edge detection will detect every objects boundary in the image. Therefore, shape description technique will be used to describe which one is the interested object boundary. The good shape description should be invariant in scaling, rotating, and translating. The successful concept is to use Fourier series, which is called "Fourier Descriptors". Elliptic Fourier Descriptors can completely represent any shape, which is selected to describe the shape of papaya. From the edge detection image, it takes a long time to match every boundary directly. The pre-processing task will reduce non-papaya edge to speed up matching time. The deformable template is used to optimize the matching. Then, clustering the similar shapes by the distance between each centroid, papaya can be completely detected from the background.

This paper presents automatic moving object detection method using the rotating camera covering larger area with a single camera. The proposed method is based on the edge segment matching which robust to the dynamic environment with illumination change and background movement. The proposed algorithm presents an edge segment based background panorama image generation method minimizing the distortion due to image stitching, the background image generation method using Generalized Hough Transformation which can reliably register the current image to the panorama image overcoming the stitching distortions, the moving edge segment extraction method that overcome viewpoint difference and distortion. The experimental results show that the proposed method can detect correctly moving object under illumination change and camera vibration.

Visible spectral characteristics of cross-sectional emissions from a partially premixed methane/air and propane/air flames have been investigated. An optical train with a two-axis scanning mirror system was used to record line-of-sight emission spectra from 354nm to 618nm, and inversion technique was adapted to obtain cross-sectional emission spectra. By analyzing the reconstructed emission spectra, cross-sectional intensities of CH and $C_2$ radicals were separated from the background emissions. The blue flame edge and yellow flame edge were also obtained by image processing technique for edge detection with color photograph of flame. These edges were compared with radial distributions of CH, $C_2$ radicals and background emissions. The CH radicals were observed at blue flame edge. The background emissions were generated by soot precursor at upstream of flame and by soot at downstream of flame. The $C_2$ radicals in propane/air flame were observed more than those in methane/air flame.

The basic idea of conventional thresholding is that an image consists of objects and their background where the gray levels of the objects are different from those of the background. In this paper, we extend it to one where an image consists of not only objects and the background but also their edges. Based on this extension, we propose an edge detection-based thresholding method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by experimental results tested on six well-known test images and compared with conventional methods.

This paper proposes a change detection method based on the covariance matrices of color and edge gradient in a color video. The YCbCr color format was used instead of RGB. The color covariance matrix was calculated from the CbCr-channels and the edge gradient covariance matrix was calculated from the Y-channels. The covariance matrices were effectively calculated at each pixel by calculating the sum, squared sum, and sum of two values' multiplication of a rectangle area using the integral images from a background image. The background image was updated by a running the average between the background image and a current frame. The change areas in a current frame image against the background were detected using the Mahalanobis distance, which is a measure of the statistical distance using covariance matrices. The experimental results of an expressway color video showed that the proposed approach can effectively detect change regions for color and edge gradients against the background.
