The sand sediments contained a total of 19 species of genus Hantzschia, Hantzschia amphioxys (Ehrenberg) Grunow, H. amphioxys f. capitata O. Muller, H. baltica Simonsen, H. distinctepunctata (Hustedt) Hustedt, H. elegantula (Østrup) Witkowski et al., H. longiareolata Garcia-Baptista, H. marina (Donkin) Grunow, H. pseudomarina Hustedt, H. virgata (Roper) Grunow, H. virgata var. gracilis Hustedt, H. virgata var. kariana Grunow, H. virgata var. leptocephala Østrup and H. weyprechtii Grunow, including six unconfirmed species. Eleven Hantzschia species are reported as new to Korea. Hantzschia virgata, its infraspecies, and neighboring speceis showed large morphological variations within a single species or among the closely related species. Hantzschia amphioxys, H. distinctepunctata, and H. virgata var. leptocephala prefer freshwater habitats in the upper reaches of the river, while others occurred mainly in the sand flats composed of coarse sand in the intertidal area. In the estuarine sediments, the Hantzschia taxa are classified to be typical sand-attached forms.

  • Remarkable diversity of diatom taxa occurs in intertidal sand-flats of the Nakdong River estuary, one of the most dynamic and productive ecosystem in Korea. Benthic diatoms were collected from the sandy sediments to clarify the taxonomic accounts and distribution of the old genus Navicula, i.e., the naviculoid flora. Total 92 taxa belonging to Navicula sensu stricto and 22 genera separated from Navicula sensu lato are reported with brief descriptions and micrographs, and many species remain unidentified. The genera are ranked by the number of diatom species: Navicula of 33 species and varieties, Fallacia of 17 species, Placoneis of five species, Fogedia and Parlibellus of four species, Austariella, Hippodonta and Petroneis of three species, Cosmioneis, Diadesmis, Luticola, Moreneis and Sellaphora of two species and variety, Berkeleya, Chamaepinnularia, Cocconeiopsis, Diademoides, Dickieia, Eolimna, Geissleria, Haslea, Lyrella and Mayamaea of one species. Through 32 samplings of the 12 areas, the important species were identified Navicula perminuta, N. gregaria, N. torneensis, Fallacia cunoniae, F. litoricola, F. subforcipata, F. tenera. The naviculoid diatoms constitute an average of 27% (range: minimum to maximum, 5-75%), of the benthic diatom assemblages. The diatom assemblages are characterized by the colonizing of a few dominant or frequent species and many occasional or rare species. The dominant species were observed to fluctuate with sampling site and time. Among the reported naviculoid diatoms, 46 taxa are newly reported in Korea.

  • Biodiversity and the community composition of micro-eukaryotic organisms were investigated in the Upo wetland in Korea using molecular analysis. Molecular identification was performed using cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA). The genomic DNA was isolated directly from soil samples. The COI and SSU rDNA regions were amplified using universal primers and then sequenced after cloning. In a similarity search of the obtained sequences with BLAST in the Genbank database, the closely related sequences from NCBI were used to identify the amplified sequences. A total of six eukaryotic groups (Annelida, Arthropoda, Rotifera, Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, and Stramenopiles) with COI and six groups (Annelida, Arthropoda, Rotifera, Alveolata, Fungi, and Apicomplexa) with SSU rDNA genes were determined in the Upo wetland. Among 38 taxa in 20 genera, which are closely related to the amplified sequences, 10 genera (50%) were newly reported in Korea and five genera (25%) were shown to be distributed in the Upo wetland. This approach is applicable to the development of an efficient method for monitoring biodiversity without traditional taxonomic processes and is expected to produce more accurate results in depositing molecular barcode data in the near future.

  • Paralia species have been frequently reported as P. sulcata in Korea, despite the species diversity within the genus. To understand the species diversity of Paralia in Korea, we collected phytoplankton samples at 79 sites from April 2006 to April 2015. Five Paralia species, P. fenestrata, P. guyana, P. marina, P. cf. obscura, and P. sulcata, were observed during this study, and we described their fine structure in terms of quantitative and qualitative morphological characteristics. To provide additional criteria to identify Paralia species more clearly, we morphometrically analysed four quantitative characteristics on valve diameter: pervalvar axis / diameter, internal linking spines / diameter, marginal linking spines / diameter, and fenestrae/diameter using non-metric multidimensional scaling (MDS). MDS analysis distinguished four Paralia species: P. guyana, P. marina, P. cf. obscura, and P. sulcata, with the exception of P. fenestrata. This new approach in using morphometric analysis is useful for the accurate identification of Paralia species.

  • Surirella atomus Hustedt 1955, surirelloid diatom, were obtained from Hampyeong Bay, Mu-an, in the west coast of Korea. We describe the first record of S. atomus in Korea and report its ultrastructure and molecular characteristics for the first time. For molecular analysis, rbcL gene and cob gene were sequenced. This species is very small in size, making it difficult to observe its morphological features under a light microscope. Even with a scanning electron microscope, it has no unique structure in the valve. It is morphologically very simple. This rare species was known as a marine benthic species. However, it appears to be widely distributed in marine, freshwater, and brackish environments according to the literature documenting this species. In terms of phylogeny, S. atomus has been tentatively linked to Petrodictyon gemma, but the phylogenetic placement of S. atomus seems to be still uncertain, in a manner that is similar to S. febigeri. However, morphological observations derived from this study suggest that this species belongs to the genus Surirella.

  • Two new species of Pseudostaurosiropsis are described based on material collected from rivers in southern United States of America, P. californicus sp. nov. and P. elaboratus sp. nov. Both species have specific characters that set them apart from taxa currently ascribed to the genus. Pseudostaurosiropsis californicus sp. nov. has lanceolate valves with subrostrate, broadly rounded apices, an axial area at the same level as the virgae in internal and external views and both are at the same level as striae in external view, the spine tips are dentate and their growth is produced by filamentous extensions, and it has equal-sized apical pore fields on both valve extremes. On the other hand, P. elaboratus sp. nov. has heavily silicified valves, the virgae are slender than the striae in outer view and wider in inner view, it only has a single, externally occluded apical pore field on one valve extreme, and the spines have a solid core. All species within Pseudostaurosiropsis are contrasted with one another and unique features are described for each based on literature and newly collected image data from type material. The genus is reconsidered and two distinguishing features are recognized: rotae externally occluding the areolae and areolae that are funnel-shaped. These features are contrasted with those in other genera and additional published species that should be included in Pseudostaurosiropsis are discussed.

  • While scientific information on the spatial variation of soda lake Microalgae is important to limnological studies, little information was reported from the Ethiopian Rift Valley Lake, Lake Chitu. This study aimed to understand the spatial distribution of the dominant Microalgae taxa in Lake Chitu, Ethiopia. The collection of samples and in situ measurements of some physico-chemical parameters were recorded at three sites for one cycle in November 2021. Fourteen species or genera of Microalgae were identified. Among those, Bacillariophyta were the most important with regard to species abundance and the rarest in species richness. Cyanophyta were the second-most important group in terms of species richness and rarity. Comparatively, all microalgae taxa were rare at both the anthropogenic areas (AA) and the flooding area (FA), which could be mainly due to intensive human and animal intervention and associated with extreme turbidity. Among Cyanophyta, Chroococcus minutus, Microcystis aeruginosa, and Spirulina platensis/fusiformis were predominant at both AA and FA, revealing their adaptation to less clear water and pollution. But S. platensis/fusiformis attained the highest abundance at the FA, indicating their preference for water in a highly nutrient-enriched area. We concluded that the spatial variation of microalgae diversity in relation to water quality parameters has implications for the importance of microalgae as a baseline indicator of water quality assessment tools in lakes.
