  • A new diatom species, Mayamaea vietnamica sp. nov., is described from Cát Tiên National Park in Vietnam. This species was discovered and described from soil samples. Algae from soil ecosystems in Vietnam are almost unknown. The new species is described on the basis of an integrated approach with molecular and morphological data, and comparison with similar species. In terms of molecular data, 18S rDNA (including V4 domain), and partial rbcL plastid genes show M. vietnamica sp. nov. is most closely related to M. terrestris N. Abarca and R. Jahn, and together they form a monophyletic group relative to other members of the genus. M. vietnamica sp. nov. differs from other species in the genus by the number of striae and areolae in 10 ㎛, number of areolae per stria, as well as shape and presence or absence of axial and central areas.

  • The Shihwa constructed wetland was established to treat the severely polluted water from Banwoul, Donghwa and Samhwa streams. This study was focused on investigating the dynamics of epiphytic algal communities on reed (Phragmites communis) planting area at 5 stations from October 2001 to June 2002. The concentration of total nitrogen and phosphorus of inlet stations from the streams were decreased after flowing through the wetland. However, the TN : TP ratios at all stations were slightly over 16 indicating that the total phosphorus may play some role as a limitation factor. Epiphytic algae on the reed were total 329 taxa which were composed of 295 species, 13 varieties, 3 forma and 18 unidentified species. The species numbers were recorded in the order of Chlorophyceae-Bacillariophyceae-Cyanophyceae-Euglenophyceae-Chrysophyceae. The relative percentage showed a seasonal variation from Cyanophyceae to Bacillariophyceae and to Chlorophyceae. The biomass of epiphytic algae measured by chlorophyll-a concentration ranged from 0.6 to $36.4\;{\mu}g\;cm^{-2}$. Dominant species were 16 taxa which were Lyngbya angusta of Cyanophyceae in the early investigation, and were changed to Stigeoclonium lubricum of Chlorophyceae, and Nitzschia palea of Bacillariophyceae etc. in the late. Species number, standing crops and chlorophyll-a concentrations of epiphytic algae showed higher values at the inlet stations than the stations after flowing through the wetland.

  • This study was to investigate phytoplankton communities and to evaluate the effects of hydrological and physical-chemical environmental factors in major five dam reservoirs in the Han River water system. Annual average of chlorophyll a concentration in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong and Lake Doam was higher than that of Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong. The opposite seasonal variation patterns of phytoplankton growth were observed in dam reservoirs; the highest biomass in spring of dry season in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong which are the river-type reservoirs and Lake Doam where turbidity was high throughout the year, and in summer and autumn of rainy season in Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong which are the lake-type reservoirs, indicating that the seasonal pattern for growth of phytoplankton in on-river reservoirs is mainly determined by hydrologic characteristics. The dominant species of phytoplankton in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong and Lake Doam, where the concentration of nutrients was relatively high, were Bacillariophyceae such as Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Aulacoseira granulata var. angustissima in Lake Paldang and Lake Cyeongpyeong and Nitzschia spp. in Lake Doam throughout all season. The dominant species of phytoplankton in Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong which showed the oligo-mesotrophic state, were Bacillariophyceae such as Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Cyclotella pseudostelligera in spring and winter, but Cyanophyceae such as Microcystis spp. in summer.

  • Regardless of continuous researches, recent researches on the genus Eucampia (Bacillariophyceae) have focused mainly on E. zodiacus f. zodiacus In the present study, species of the genus Eucampia have been studied based on their morphological characteristics. Eucampia species were collected at 24 sites from July 2008 to June 2011 in Korean coastal waters. Species were mainly identified based on the shape of valve, ocellus, and aperture, along with the length and shape of the bipolar elevations. As a result, five Eucampia species were identified: Eucampia cornuta, E. groenlandica, E. zodiacus f. zodiacus, E. zodiacus f. cylindrocornis, and E. zodiacus var. cornigera. E. cornuta and E. groenlandica have long pervalvar axis length, but the others display short or moderate length. Ocellus shape of E. cornuta, E. groenlandica and E. zodiacus f. cylindrocornis are linear ribs, whereas E. zodiacus f. zodiacus and E. zodiacus var. cornigera have radial ribs with central area. E. cornuta and E. zodiacus f. cylindrocornis have long and narrow cylindrical elevations. E. groenlandica and E. zodiacus f. zodiacus have short and broad elevations with blunt tips. E. zodiacus var. cornigera has long and broad conical elevations. In terms of aperture shape, E. cornuta has large elliptical form, E. groenlandica has almost circular to rounded rectangular form, E. zodiacus f. zodiacus has narrow and elliptical rounded rectangular to a narrow lanceolate form, E. zodiacus f. cylindrocornis has almost rectangular form, and E. zodiacus var. cornigera has rounded rhombic form. On the basis of elevations in broad girdle view, 5 Eucampia taxa could be divided into 3 types: 'narrow H type', E. cornuta and E. groenlandica; 'regular H type', E. zodiacus f. cylindrocornis and E. zodiacus var. cornigera (partial); 'wide H type', E. zodiacus f. zodiacus (almost).

  • This study was performed to evaluate characteristics of algal occurrence in Lake Paldang. Chlorophyll a concentration was highest during spring, based on weekly measurements from 2006 to 2008, which revealed a different trend compared to the data before 2000 that showed the highest level during summer. Total algae cell quantity was also highest during spring, based on monthly data. Overall, Bacillariophyceae was dominant and represented 87% of total algae cells and occupation was more significant during spring and winter. Cyanophyceae was dominant during summer. 2-MIB and geosmin originating in algae which caused odor problems was high in July 2008, and more research on the relationship between algae and production of odor causing material is needed.

  • The physico-chemical characteristics and seasonal variations of phytoplankton community were investigated in the Paksil and Jungyang marshes. Water and phytoplankton samples for analyses were collected monthly from April 2002 to March 2003. A total of 421 taxa of phytoplankton belonging to eight classes identified. The number of taxa was highest in Bacillariophyceae, followed by Chlorophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Dinophyceae, Xanthophyceae and Cryptophyceae. The standing crops ranged from 1.25 ${\times}$ $10^6$ to 5.85 ${\times}$ $10^6$ cells ${\cdot}l^{-1}$ in Paksil marsh and 0.25 to 9.63 ${\times}$ $10^6$ cells ${\cdot}l^{-1}$ in Jungyang marsh. The highest algal density at Paksil marsh was recorded in October during the high development of Chlorococcales while the lowest value occured in July. In the Jungyang marsh, the maximum algal density was recorded in October when Cryptomonas sp. and Mallomonas sp. accounted for 64% to total cell numbers and the lowest cell density was observed in January due to the decrease of Chlorophyceae. The dominant species were represented by Euglena proxima, Trachelomonas oblonga, Trachelomonas volvocina of Euglenophyceae, Dictyosphaerium pulchellum, Monoraphidium griffithii, Oocystis parva of Chlorophyceae, Dinobryon sertularia, Kephyrion rubri-claustri of Chrysophyceae, Achnanthes minutissima of Bacillariophyceae and Cryptomonas sp. of Cryptophyceae in the Paksil and Jungyang marshes. Phytoplankton diversity(H’) and dominance index varied rather irregularly throughout the sampling period but they were significantly correlated. The highest diversity(H’Paksil = 3.68, H’Jungyang = 3.63) coincided with the lowest values of dominance(DPaksil = 0.05, DJungyang = 0.05)

  • This study was to clarify the variations in a marine ecosystem through examining the species composition of phytoplankton in the coastal water of Baegyado Island during winter. Water temperature, salinity, SS, NH$_4$-N, NO$_2$-N, NO$_3$-N and SiO$_2$-Si were significantly different and in inverse proportion to the chlorophyll a and species number according to stations and water depth. The total number of species was 88, composed of 94% Bacillariophyceae, 3.4% Chrysophyceae, 2.2% Dinophyceae and 1.1% Euglenophyceae. The dominant species were Rhizosolenia setigera, Skeletonema costatum and Stephanopyxis palmeriana. The maximum of standing crops was $5,450cells{\cdot}ml^(-1)$, while the minimum was $1,700cells{\cdot}ml^(-1)$. The coastal water was influenced with two water bodies which had characteristics of low water temperature - low salinity and high water temperature - high salinity.
