Fly Ash Application for Reduction of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) as Runoff and Leachate Released from Mine Waste Disposal Sites

  • Mine wastes such as acid mine drainage (AMD) can cause the detrimental effects on surrounding environment, thereby eventually threatening human health. Main objective of this study was to evaluate the neutralizing effect of fly ash (FA) as a stabilizing material AMD. Field plot was constructed in a coal waste depot which has caused aluminium-whitening adjacent to the stream. Different mixing ratios of FA were applied on a top of the soil, and then the physicochemical properties of runoff and soil were monitored. Constructed plots were as following: control (mine waste only (W)), mine waste + 20% ($w\;w^{-1}$)of FA (WC20M), mine waste + 40% ($w\;w^{-1}$)of FA (WC40M), and WC40M dressed with a fresh soil at the top (WC40MD). Result showed that initial pH of runoff in control was 5.09 while that in WC40M (7.81) was significantly increased. For a plot treated with WC40M, the concentration of Al in runoff was decreased to $0.22mg\;L^{-1}$ compared to the W as the control ($4.85mg\;L^{-1}$). Moreover, the concentration of Fe was also decreased to less than half at the WC40M compared to the control. Application of FA can be useful for neutralizing AMD and possibly minimizing adverse effect of AMD in mining area.

A Study on the Cooking in 'The kosa-sibi Jip' (교사십이지의 조리가공에 관한 분석적 연구 (1))

  • This paper has examined and analyzed the ways of making Jang(Korean soybean sauce), vinegar and liquor in terms of food processes, which are mentioned in sooljip 5 and 6 Food collections of 'Kosa-sibi Jip', an encyclopaedia written in Chinese and published in 1789-the eleventh year of King Jung-jo of Chosun Dynasty. There respestively six items of nine items of and thirty three items of the recipe for making jang, vinegar and liquor, Soybean was a major material for making jang. And wheat flour and ground barley were added. Myun-jang was made from only flour. Dong-kook Jojang Bup(oriental soybean sauce preparation) which is the traditional Korean process for making jang from only soybean is recorded in this book. The cereals used in the nine items of the vinegar making recipe were rice(six times), wheat(twice), barley(three times) and wheat flour(once). And fruits are also used. Rice was most used of all these materials. The cereals used in the thirty three items of the liquor-making recipe were regular rice(50%), sticky rice(42.6%) and wheat flour(7.4%) In particular sticky rice was much used for Yakyee Rhue and Bok-sik Rhue for medications. The ways of processing cereals for liquor-making were Jee-ae-bop : steamed rice(52.9%), Jook:thick gruel with cereal (32.3%), Goo-mung Tuck: doughnut-shaped rice cake(8.8%) and Hin-moo-ree Tuck: shawith peless rice cake(2.9%). The three unique processes are as follows. First, in winter when the process of liquor-making did not go on because the jar was cold, the bottle with hot water in was put in the jar and so the aduquate temperature for liquor-making was maintained. Next, in warming up a small double boiler, they prevented effervescence by hanging down thread. Finally. in warming up in a double boiler, they sealed the mouth-piece of the jar and put a handful of wet rice when the rice was completely cooked, it was thought of as the sign that the process of liquor-making was done.

  • Numerical solutions were obtained to the model equations for various of the parameters characterizing the pore structure, effective internal diffusion, and the chemical reaction constant. The conversion was decreased with the cause of pore closure at the surface of reacting particles, reduction of porosity, surface area of reaction and effective diffusion coefficient in the solid with the progress of reaction. Total conversion was strongly dependent on the local conversion at surface. According to the decreasing of impregnated concentration of the copper oxide and the increase of the flue gases concentration, total conversion was increased. The conversion was affected by gas flow rate and pore size distribution in the reacting solid.

  • In der vorliegenden Arbeit geht es um die vergleichende Betrachtung von deutschen Urteilen OLG Munchen, Urt. v. 21. 4. 2011 - Az. 1 U 2363/10; BGH, Urt. v. 22. 5. 2012 - VI ZR 157/11) und einer Reihe von koreanischen Urteilen im Bereich des Arzthaftungsrechts. Sie behandelt die Kausalitat von Tatbestand und Rechtswidrigkeitszusammenhang in der normativen Haftungszurechung. In Korea gilt die sog. Adaquanztheorie noch entscheidend als bewertendes Zurechnungskriterium - sogar manchmal als umgangssprachliches Homonym im Sinne der Verh$\ddot{a}$ltnism$\ddot{a}{\ss}$igkeit angewendet -, die dogmengeschichtlich von Deutschland $\ddot{o}$bernommen wurde. Doch wie aus den deutschen Urteilen ersichtlich, ist sie dort schon $\ddot{u}$berwunden. Die Ergebnisse der betrffenden koreanischen Urteile sind zwar nicht unbillig, deren Urteilsbegrundungen aber theoretisch bzw. praktisch nicht $\ddot{u}$berzeugend. Nach allgemeiner Ansicht kommt es vielmehr auf den Schutzzweck an, der auch bei der Anwendung des ${\S}$ 393 KBGB gelten kann. Schlie${\ss}$lich wurde die $\ddot{U}$bertragung des praxisgerechten L$\ddot{o}$sungsansatzes in deutschen Urteilen auf rechtsvergleichende Weise dazu beitragen, die Zivilrechtspraxis in der koreanischen Justiz nachvollziehbarer machen.

Phenotypic Diversity of Shea(Vitellaria Paradoxa C. F. Gaertn.) Populations across Four Agro-Ecological Zones of Cameroon

  • Vitellaria paradoxa commonly called shea is an important agro forestry and fruit-bearing species present in four agro-ecological zones of Cameroon. The goal of this work was the morphological characterization of certain populations of V. paradoxa which will serve as a necessary step for a subsequent genetic study of the species. Morphological observations related to 20 agronomic traits, studied on 8-13 trees selected from each of the eight shea populations across four different agro-ecological zones located in four provinces of Cameroon were studied. The study showed that there was a variation between the populations, related to the traits measured on the trunk, fruit, nut, and leaf. Three shapes of the tree(ball, broom, and trained), five shapes of the fruit(round, oblong, reversed pear, ovoid, and oblong), three colors of the nut(clear brown, dark brown, and blackish brown) were identified. The principal component analysis(PCA) carried out on the quantitative characters revealed 72% of the total variance expressed on the first and second main axis. This variation was essentially explained by the traits measured on the fruits and on the nuts. The analyses showed that only the traits of the fruits and the nuts were discriminative. The shea populations studied were structured into two distinct groups using these discriminative traits.

Estimation of Mercury Emission from Major Sources in Annex D of Minamata Convention and Future Trend (국내 비의도적 주요 배출원의 지역별 수은 대기 배출량 산정 및 미래 활동도 변화와 최적가용기술 적용 시 배출량 추이)

  • This study discusses the present status of mercury emission and distribution from major anthropogenic sources in Korea and the future trend of mercury emission by activity changes and application of BATs. Atmospheric mercury emission from major anthropogenic sources based on Annex D of Minamata convention was estimated to around 4.89 tonne in 2012. Emission ratios of cement clinker production, coal-fired power plant, waste incineration and non-ferrous metal smelting were 68.68%, 24.75%, 6.29% and 0.28%, respectively. High mercury emission regions were characterized by the presence of cement clinker production facilities and coal-fired power plants. Prediction of future activities was carried out by linear regression of the previous year data. The (total) mercury emission was estimated to decrease up to 48% Under the scenario of BATs to be applied and the change of future activities. Emissions from coal-fired powerplants and cement clinkers were expected to decrease significantly.

Safety of Thyroidectomy in Thyroid Cancer Patients Older than 75 Years (고령 갑상선암 환자의 갑상선 절제술의 안정성)

  • Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and the feasibility of thyroidectomy for aged (${\geq}75$ years old) thyroid cancer by reviewing postoperative morbidity and pathologic characteristics. Materials & Methods: The clinical records of patients submitted to thyroid operation between 2014 and 2015 with histopathological diagnosis of thyroid cancer were analyzed. Clinical variables included age, gender, preoperative symptom, final pathology, length of stay, comorbidities, American Society of Anesthesiologists score, postoperative complications, and mortality. Results: There were 30 patients aged more than 75 years old, and only one patient passed over with postoperative pneumonia. There were 8 male and 22 female patients. Half of the patients presented with symptoms such as palpable mass (33.3%), voice change (6.7%) and dyspnea (6.7%). The pathologic diagnosis was thyroid cancer in all cases. The median postoperative hospitalization time was 4 days. There was one perioperative mortality case observed in this study. Conclusion: Thyroid surgery in patients 75 years or older can be performed except extensive surgical resection. Aggressive histology and extent of surgery may be an important factor of perioperative mortality and morbidity.

A study on Huh-Joon's medical thoughts in Dong-Eui-Bo-Kham (동의보감(東醫寶鑑)을 통한 허준의 의학사상에 관한 고찰)

  • Huh-joon's medical thoughts shown on his medical book of the Doog-Eui-Bo-Kham can be summerized as follows. 1. The general trend of medical science in Koryo dynasty is that much more interests were concentrated upon the books about curative means rather than upon the books about theoretical knowledge of medical science. With the development of Hyang Yak(鄕樂) (the term referring either various kinds of domestic medical stuffs such as herbs or the curative methods using those stuffs) and the writing of books on Hyang Yak, independent medical science of the nation's own was established in late Koryo dynasty. And the national medical science was continuously further developed until early Choson dynasty. Briskly-expanded mutual exchanges with China in early Choson dynasty provided Choson opportunities to import Chinese medical science and to examine it. Under this circumstances, he wrote the Dong-Eui-Bo-Kham. 2. As we look over the preface and Chip-Rae-Muo(集例文), we can find the characterstic of Doog-Eui-Bo-Kham is that the philosophical theory of Taoism was quoted in explaining the principles of his medical science and that the main idea of Naekyuog is the basis in explaining the way of curing diseases. 3. 83 kinds of medical books were quoted in the Doog-Eui-Bo-Kham. Besides, as many as 200 kinds of books including Tao-tzu's teaching books(道書), history books(史書), almanac(曆書), and Confucius' teaching books(儒家書籍) were quoted in total. Naekyuog and Eue-Hak-Ip-Mun, Dan-Kye-Sim-Bup were the most frequently quoted books among them. 4. Huh-Joon's medical thoughts about health care were like these. 1) The reason why Huh-Joon regarded the idea of health care as of great importance was that he laid much more emphasises on the preventive medicines rather than on the remedial medicines. The direct reason was that he was greatly influenced by profound knowledge of Taoist's study of discipline and who participated in the editing the books from the beginning. 2) Huh-Joon's outlook on human body started from the theory of "Unity of Heaven and Man"(天人合一論), which implied man was a kind of miniature universe. In addition to that, he largely theory of essence(精), vital force(氣), and spirit(神) which were regarded very important as the three most valuable properties in Taoism. However, he took his medical ground on practical and pragmatic idea that he did not discuss fundamental essence(元精), fundamental vital force(元氣), and fundamental spirit(元神) which were given by Heaven from the received only the theory of essence, vital force, and spirit which were acquired after birth and worked mainly on realistic activity of life. 3) Huh-loon accepted Do-In-Bup(導引法) sharply as a method to prevent and cure diseases. 5. Huh-loon's medical thoughts on remedial aspects are as 1) Naekyung was considered so important in Dong-Eui-Bo-Kham that not only each paragraph was begun with the Quotations from Nackyung but also the edited order of the content of the book the same with that of Naekyung. And differently from the former korean medical books he accepted at large and recorded the theories of the four noted physicians of the Geum-Won era(金元四大家) by Dong-Eui-Bo-Kham. 2) For the first time, Huh-Joon introduced the theory of Un-Ki (運氣論) in the Dong-Eui-Bo-Kahm. However, he accepted it as a pathological function of human body but he did not apply physical constitution, physiological function, pathological function, and remedial methods. 3) Huh-loon liked to use Hyang Yak that he recorded korean name of Hyang Yak(鄕名), places of the production(産地), the time of collecting(採取時月), and the way of drying herbs(陰陽乾正法) in the remedial method of a single medicine prescription for diseases at the end of each paragraph. By doing so, he developed, arranged, and revived Hyang Yak. 4) He believed that since the natural features of China were different from those of Korea the reasons of being attacked with its remedial methods couldn't be the same with different from Chinese medical books which primarily focused on paralysis and the injury of the cold has his own structure in his book that he founded independent science of this nation. He consulted enormous documents He discovered and wrote the theory and therefore concrete methods for diseases so that the book hadthe principles of outbreak of diseases(理), methods of cure(法), prescription(方), and a single medicine prescription(藥) and set system of medical science in a good order. By doing so, he and pragmatic development of medical science.

A Study on Korean Dog Meat Cooking (I) -Bibliographical Study- (견육요리(犬肉料理)의 연구(硏究) (I) -문헌고찰(文獻考察)-)

  • In this study, the kinds of Dog Meat Cooking, the frequency of them, the ingredients, and the variation of recipes written in the books from 1670 to 1943 in Korea were studied. 1. There were 14 Dog Meat recipes in the literature. And the number dishes is 50. Among these, Jeung (steaming in seasoning:(蒸) had the highest frequency, 20(40%), which has played a main role. Kaeng or Tang (soup:(羹,湯) has appeared 12 times (24%) and Eikin koki dasi chinun bup (steaming twice), Kujang(steaming with white onions:((狗醬) 4 times (8%), respectively. 2. The number of sesonings was 22, the major ones according to the frequencies were oil and soy sauce(34.7%), sesame-seed powder(32.6%), pepper(30.4%), vinegar(30.4%), soy sauce (23.9%), red pepper powder(21.7%(, sesame-seed oil(19.5%), Mancho powder(19.5%), and Chuncho powder(19.5%). 3. Five ingradients were found, among which onion was most widely used(28.2%), Parsley(17.3%), Kyeyun(8.6%), leek(2.1%), and walnut(2.1%) have also appeared.

A Study on the Ingredients Preparation Method of Lotus Root Jung Kwa (연근정과의 재료 및 조리방법에 관한 연구)

  • The Jung Kwa is of the traditional Han Kwa which boiled in sugar or honey. This study summerized the history of the Jung Kwa by the cook book which introduced 1600 years from now. The purpose of this study was to find out the most scientific and effective preparation process of 'Jung Kwa' of lotus root by the preference sensory test and the mechanical method of penetrometer. In this paper the effect of changes in boiling method mixture ratio of water, sugar, and honey, boiling time, upon the appearance, taste, texture and color of 'Jung Kwa' has been studied. The results are as follows : (1) The Jung Kwas which introduced in the cook books are 34 different kinds and the most well-known one among them is lotus root Jung Kwa. (2) In the beginning Jung Kwa boiled in honey but, Jung Kwa which boiled in sugar was introduced at first in 'Eum Sick Bup' Published in 1843. (3) The lotus root cut in a thickness of 7 mm, water 150 ml lotus root 100 g and vinegar 4 ml are mixed and boiled for 12 minutes. To prevent from browning reaction vinegar is added, In this case, the hardness is 5.86 min.(5) The most proper quantity of water in appearance, taste, texture and color is 200 ml. In this case, the hardness is 3.3 mm. (5) The most proper quantity of sugar in appearance, taste, texture and color is 30 g. In this case, the hardness is 3.8 mm.(6) The most proper quantity of honey in appearance, taste, texture and color is 40 g. In this case, the hardness is 4.9 mm.
